The Broadway Plague Strikes Again!
Legally Blonde, Xanadu, Spamalot, Hairspray!
So many shows have recently closed or are about to. And you can now add Spring Awakening to that list.
Not even Broadway and New York City tourism are immune from the current global financial crisis!
Broadway World is reporting that Tony-winning musical Spring Awakening will closing soon.
The show will play its final performance on January 18th.
When Spring Awakening closes, it will have played 859 performances and 29 previews.

sounds boring
well, duh the crisis is GLOBAL, genius! lmaoo
This is unfortunate. Of course, a solution might be for the theatre owner to give the producers a break on the cost of renting the theatre. In turn, the talent could be willing to take a paycut from the producers. And show lowers its ticket prices so people can afford tickets.
Of course, the world doesn't work this way because AMERICA RUNS ON GREED!
Who wants to see my puppet show?
Not gay - don't care.
Closing? I havent seen it yet! That's on my list of things to see on broadway!
Broadway shows suck so hard. Every time I see a preview to "Wicked" I feel like someone is Donkey Punching me without the fun of passing out.
NO THIS SHOW IS AMAZING!
how can they do this!?!?!
GOD MADE ADAM AND EVE NOT ADAM AND STEVE!!!!!!!!!!
NOOO. i wanted to see that so badly!!
I think the question we all need to ask is….
"where will she striiiiiiiiiiiike…….neeeeeexxxxxxttttttttt………"
:(
Broadway is slowly dying! SAVE THE CHILDREN!!!!
OH NO!!
That is the best show I have seen in NYC and ive seen 9 broadway shows.
Re: Productboy –
Actually there is a gay character in the play.
are you serious that is the most amazing show! nOOOOOO it can't close. people go go go see it now get your tix dont let it close!
I bought this soundtrack on iTunes years ago when it first came out…and I never listened to it…not even once, LOL!
That is to bad, but not a surprise. Last time I saw it there where a lot of empty seats. Not the end of the world it will tour for a long time and there will be a revival in 10 years or so. The one guy who commented about owners lowering rents and prices coming down is right. It is just way to expensive for the average person to afford. But I dont see that happening. Then everyone will have to take pay cuts.
Im totaly upset i always wanted to see legally blonde nd now thats gone then i wanted to see hairspray now thats gone to. Spamalot i deff wanted to see that but now thats closing. nd now the play ive been wanting to see forever is closing all i have to say is y NY y y r u doin this to people.
don't forget [title of show]!
So a show about teens fucking and turning gay….
don't you mean High School Musical 3?
Re: Nick331 – Hah so you are out about nine thousand
dollars. Next time wait for the local touring company , or the DVD>
This happens to various shows all the time. The only reason it's making headlines now is because its more common.
DAMNIT!!! Spring Awakening was on my must see list!! SHIT!!
I'm so sad! I love this musical. It's so great and it has touched so many lives, including mine. I was planning on auditioning for this musical but my dreams have been crushed.
Really though, if you haven't seen it and you want to see it, GO SEE IT! I've seen it 3 times (one time on-stage) and I am planning on getting tickets to the final performance! You won't be disappointed! It is unlike any other Broadway show you will ever see!!!
this is sooo disappointing, it was such an amazing show.the songs were modern and catchy and it was just a fun broadway show, it's so sad to see it go
my friends brother was in this play too, it was sooo goood!

Backers of Prop. 8 raised $24.3 million as of the end of September. WE have only raised $15.4 million. WE are seriously underfunded.

Soon gays won't have anywhere to go.
OH man. i'm lucky i just saw this show last Saturday night
oh damn! that was such a good show too :/ it's a good thing i saw this and hairspray when i had the chance! all the good shows are going away, i never got a chance to see legally blonde, and all the new shows are gonna suck.
OH WELL.
OMIGOD I AM LIKE GOING TO CRY!!!!!!!!!!!
no no no no no!!!! this show is one of the best broadway musicals out there!!!! this is so unfair!!
The economy has totally tanked and it's tough out there in the trenches. When "Joe the Plumber" is worried about making his mortgage payment, car payment, feeding his wife and children, paying for gas for his truck, etc. there's NO money left for entertainment. Sadly, the United States is in for a long financial down turn and there are lot of things the average person is going to have to give up.
OBAMA-BIDEN on November 4th!
Thank god Wicked and Lion King still selling out, keeping broadway alive until it can revive itself.
URG, totally crying here
Ohh perez, i'm sorry baby there is a typo… i still love you though.
Broadway World is reporting that Tony-winning musical Spring Awakening will closing soon.
^
OMG!! This is so sad!! I just saw this show last Saturday on their tour in Seattle and it was AMAZING!!
I hope I get the chance to get to NYC to see it again before it closes!!!
OUR BODIES ARE THE GUILTY ONES!!!

whyy???
:(
i loved this show !!!!
why whyyy whyyy ??!!
:(
i loved this show
I saw this play and totally loved it. It was really, really great. but all good things must come to an end
This is SAD, this is a great show. Fuck you republicans are messing up my Broadway entertainment.
It's only closing in New York. It will be in Houston in February.
Really Broadway, really? Sure, close the shows that mean something and make room for more of your movie-musicals, why not, give the people what they want I guess. Ugh, I am so anti-Broadway right now because as a theatre a major, I live to see these awesome original shows that leave you with a sense of catharsis afterwards, and now it's all going downhill. Kudos to you Broadway, you closed RENT after 12 amazing years and claim that it's fine, "Spring Awakening has replaced it" and now less that 2 months later you announce you're closing them. Nice plan. Politics? Sure.
Re: erhg74 – yeah, people only want what's "safe" now, which I guess means Disney. Don't get me wrong, Broadway does Disney great, but really, it's all we're seeing. That and re-makes. Broadway is doing away with originality it seems, I guess it's going out of fashion.
