"Blessings in a Backpack began in 2005 with just one school in Louisville, Kentucky. The program is celebrating its second year of operation outside of Jefferson County and the Louisville, Kentucky Metro regions. This program is designed to help meet the nutritional needs of children and families over weekends. The Blessings in a Backpack is a program being initiated through the efforts of concerned citizens. Every Thursday afternoon, volunteers will fill selected student's backpacks with non-perishable food items and pass them out to students on fridays at the end of the school day. "

WHAT A GREAT PROGRAM.
I used to work as a teacher. I taught older students, but one of my best friends taught kids in the 2nd grade. She was in a poor area. She said many of the kids came to school so hungry their stomachs hurt…
Way to go Perez by spotlighting awesome charities like this one!!!
Let's make sure these families are provided birth control as well. When you can't feed the ones you have, you've got no business creating more.

I work with preschoolers & one year we had this poor child who would come to school every Monday absolutely starving. The mother had a new boyfriend who would get Filet Mignon & lobster dinners & the kid would go hungry because she couldn't afford both. We did the same thing for this child, but unfortunately it didn't always work. We ended up reporting the mother.
This is a GREAT program. There's a similar program in our area, and it breaks your heart to hear of a child who says that their favorite day of the week is Friday, not because of the weekend, but because that's when they get food for the weekend.
