Denis Leary sat down with gay mag The Advocate to talk about his controversial book Why We Suck and things got….heated.
In the interview (which will be in next month's issue) the interviewer grills the Rescue Me douche about a chapter in his book titled 'Matt Dillon Is a Giant Fag'.
Mr. Interviewer asked what right Leary thinks he has to use the other F word. To that Leary said:
"I also have a chapter called, 'We'd Hate You Even If You Weren't Black'. I don't believe in the power of words. My parents came from Ireland, where the [C-word] is literally a word your mother and father would use to describe the weather or the car: 'That [C-word]ing car won't start!' And I come from a Catholic background where the nuns were always telling you, 'Don't do this, don't say this,' so any time anyone tells me I shouldn't say something, my reaction is, 'Why not?' "
Back in 2006, Elle magazine asked Leary to name a man he'd sleep with if his life depended on it. Leary's answer was, "I'd shoot myself in the head."
The Advocate decided to revisit that question and the slur slinger said, "I'd have to have my wife dress up as a man. I never met him, but I always really loved Paul Newman - not only as an actor, but also the way he carried himself . . . So I guess I'd have to dress my wife up as Paul Newman."
Oh Denis, Denis, Denis.

He is someone who really cares about widows, children and firemen that are injured in the line of duty. He and Jerry Lewis have done more for other people than most 'celebrities' would do, leave them alone.

Shocking as it may be, not every man wants to sleep with another man and this was his way of saying so. I know. I know. It's hard to believe but not all of us even want to go there, particularly with a reporter where no answer will be acceptable.

I wouldn't really compare Denis to Jerry Lewis. I think Dennis is fully aware of the words that he uses and he just does it to cause a stink. I wouldn't really take him seriously. Regarding his words in Elle, it's really he interviewers fault for even asking Denis Leary such a question (He's Denis Leary, of course he's going to say something a bit offensive). I'm all for gay rights and for people to stop using stupid derogatory words, but I also think this post was complete overkill.

I know someone that has worked with him before, they said he was a pretentious douche. That being said, it is never a good thing to use words of hate, but you can't hate the guy for being heterosexual just as you shouldn't hate anyone for being a homosexual.

I don't have a problem with the "sleep with a guy" comment. They asked if his life depending on it, what man would he sleep with. I immediately thought of rape. People are at gun point and have "sex with people if their life depended on it" so I thought that question was offensive, and have no concern over the answer. And I think that people do put too much importance on words. People say they are "retarded" all the time when they do something, but you don't hear an uproar over that daily. It is just a word, now if there was an action associated with it ( hate crimes ) then I would be concerned.
