Joaquin Phoenix Announces His Retirement!

Filed under: Music Minute > Film Flickers > Joaquin Phoenix

joaquin__opt1.jpg

At a Paul Newman benefit on Monday, Joaquin Phoenix dropped quite the bomb on the TV show Extra:

"I want to take this opportunity… also to give you the exclusive and just talk a little bit about the fact that this will be my last performance as an actor… I'm not doing films anymore."

"Extra's" Jerry Penacoli, shocked by the news, further probed Joaquin. "Are you serious?" Phoenix, who was curiously being followed by his own camera crews, reiterated, "Yeah. I'm working on my music. I'm done. I've been through that."

Actor Casey Affleck, present during the admission, tells "Extra", "I don't think he's kidding. He's got music and stuff."

We mentioned a few months back that Phoenix was working on an album.

Guess it's very, very 'serious' stuff.

When his rep was contacted about Phoenix's proclamation, their response was, "That is what he told me."

Whatever. We have a funny feeling it's going to play out like this…

He'll release his 'music', no one will buy his stuff, and then he'll make a big deal out of his 'acting' comeback.

Thespians are so overly dramatic!

Re: poopdiddy2008 – No he does not, he has already spoken out in favor of gay marriage. Check the facts, douchebag. Spreading your garbage on here is not going to change on god damn thing, except for letting everyone know how douchy you really are.

  16. 16

    He's a hottie.

  17. 17

oh BS. He'll be back in five years tops.

  18. 18

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

  19. 19

Weird. He'll eventually run out of cash in a while and make another film. Maybe an M. Night Shyamanlan film or Ridley Scott film or something, but he'll do it again -for the money.

  20. 20

    NOOOOOOOOOO

  21. 21

He is so fucking gorgeous…. Sad day, he is a great actor

  22. 22

noooooo! he's a bit random, but he's ridiculously fit. amazing actor, totally underrated.

  23. 23

WTF?! NOOOO, JOAQUIN!!! Why????? He is one of my favourite actors!!

  24. 24

    Whatever they all say that

  25. 25

I was at the benefit of Hemingway's, The World of Nick Adams last night in SF for The Hole in the Wall Painted Turtle Camp and all performances were AMAZING, you should feature the camp Perez, if you haven't alrerady.

  26. 26

That's really sad. He's a great actor and he still has a lot more to offer.

  27. 27

    This is very upsetting!

  28. 28

NO!!!!!!!! Oh man I love Joaquin. Sometimes I only watch a movie because he's in it! Ugh, so talented… please reconsider Joaquin, please!!!

  29. 29

    Nooooooooooooooo, say it isn't so!!!!!!!!!
    **
    Joaquin, Joaquin, Joaquin!!!!!!!
    **
    Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  30. 30

Re: Topher – i think you are the one that needs to check facts you pea brain:
    .
Barack Obama has said that he supports civil unions, but he is against gay marriage
    .
right from a gay/lesbian site that spews all sorts of libral crap.

  31. 31

Whats he wacked out on drugs like his brother River.

  32. 32

He's endlessly interesting. I love to watch his movies. I'm hoping that this retirement is temporary. I'm also thinking he may direct. I once heard he was directing music videos.

  33. 33

Say it aint so! Don't worry we will see him on film for a long time to come.

  34. 34

he was GREAT in "Gladiator"….loooooooved him as Commodus!!!!

  35. 35

    Re: Topher – rotfl

  36. 36

Awww, this is sad! I love him!

  37. 37

Is he gay, or what is the deal? He NEVER has a girl with him.

  38. 38

Why couldn't it have been him instead of River……….FUCK YOU GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. 39

No way! Well, I hope he does like all the other celebrities and comes out of retirement after a short while.

  40. 40

Unfortunately, I saw Clay Pigeons so all I can say is … who gives a damn. He'll probably be on the same retirement schedule as Cher.

  41. 41

he's got an amazing voice but i love him as an actor :( that's really sad to hear. i wouldn't mind that comeback some day.

  42. 42

wtf? Nooo I love him! he's a great actor :( this is just weird

  43. 43

It depends how he is with money. If he blows it, then he'll be back acting soon enough. I hope it's not true though. I love his acting.

  44. 44

I don't know…I've read in many places that he has not been doing well for some time now…maybe this is a healthy decision for him.

  45. 45

He was the one who should have got the oscar for his portrayal of Johnny Cash. He did a great job. I wish he would keep acting.

  46. 46

Well he'll be missed. He's quite a talented actor. I've always enjoyed watching him.

  47. 47

Let's not forget the time he told a reporter that a frog was gnawing on his brain….

"Do I have a large frog in my hair? Something's crawling out of my scalp. No, but I mean I feel it. I'm not worried about the looks, I'm worried about the sensation of my brain being eaten."

  48. 48

    Yeah, i agree with Perez…
He will make his music, no one will buy and then he will come back acting.
Oh my god, he is so talented! He should not leave acting! I mean, now that Heath Ledger is gone, there is a huge gap in acting. We need a promise, young actor, someone that can act.
Now he left us with Mark "say hello to your momma" Walhberg. Nice.

  49. 49

he is so talented actor! too bad when people don't realize, that they could do all the things they have skills.

  50. 50

Whatever…he makes one great film and now he thinks he's a legend? Get a life…

  51. 51

I was SO obsessed with River Phoenix and when he died, I was devastated. I think it affected me for YEARS after that and I didn't even realized it. I was so surprised when Joaquin became a household name but I was happy for him and have continued to watch his success. Casey Affleck is married to Joaquin's sister Summer who also acts occasionally. Sis Rainbow sings. Youngest sis Liberty has many children. It would make sense for Joaquin to try singing now because they are a music loving family. Can't wait to hear what he puts out.

  52. 52

Noooooo Joaquin, come back!!! I think he'll be back, he's always been an oddball but a very cute and talented oddball! But I know music is his first passion, just as it was for his brother. I also read Joaquin refuses to watch himself in his movies. Yesterday was Joaquin's 34th birthday and sadly, Friday is the 15th anniversary of River's passing. Can't believe it's been that long! I hope Joaquin AND Winona Ryder make their way back to movies!

  53. 53

Re: HAUTE COUTURE HIPPIE – I so agree with that. I can't believe he didn't win.

  54. 54

what a moron hes a great actor

  55. 55

NOOOO Joaquin is too sexy to retire!

  56. 56

He is a good actor so he will definitely be missed.

  57. 57

nooo i am in love with himmmmmM! except in real life he is kinda wierd lolllllll and he looks all old in this pic maybe its for the best hahahaha. he is still an awesome actor! he should be able to balance both careers i don't see why he would have to stop one or the other!

  58. 58

    thats quite upsetting.

  59. 59

did you see the inteview? He is such a junkie.

  60. 60

WHAT?! NOOO NOOO NOOOOOO! This can't be true, he is just playing with us, he MUST be. Just like the time he asked the journalists if he had a frog in his hair. Please tell me this isn't true! He is the best actor of his generation!!!

  61. 61

I am so glad no one believes him as he is such a great actor (he comes out totally red on realscoop.com). I am already waiting for his come back announcement.

  62. 62

ok, so this is guy gets SUPER fat in the acting off season, then drops like a shit ton when he does a movie. He is tired of pulling the oprah.
