Milk Stays True To Its Roots, Premieres in San Francisco

It was a typically windy day in San Francisco for the world premiere of Gus Van Sant's new film, Milk, on Tuesday night.
The movie - which recounts the life of California's first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk - screened at the legendary Castro Theatre, amid a crowd of No On Prop 8 supporters.
Milk stars Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, and Diego Luna were in attendance, braving the blustery conditions.
We're so excited to see this film!
A Gay Rights activist, Harvey Milk was such an important figure. He was the first openly gay man elected to a public office in the United States. He served on San Francisco's Board of Supervisors until he was tragically assassinated in 1978. Only a decade before, Martin Luther King, Jr., also a prominent leader for Civil Rights, was assassinated.

I think that my complete ignorance of Harvey Milk will not bias my opinion of the movie because sometimes bios aren't what U expect because you know the person, well THINK you know that person pretty well. I am such a fan of those two that I would probably watch paint dry if it involved them two!!!

He and the other victim were not shot because of any "gay rights issues" but because another man went postal wanting his job back. This hardly compares to MLK that was indeed shot not because a man was upset able not getting his job back but because of the words of MLK. Do you really not understand the huge gapping difference?

Dabid is right . Harvey Milk's death had NOTHING to do with gay rights. He was actually friends with the man who shot him. Harvey had dinner at his home numerous times. Dan White was a sick man and Harvey Milk and mayor Moscone screwed him over. Harvey Milk is no hero.
Being a French Canadian heterosexual, I had never heard of Harvey Milk. But when I learned that Sean Penn was going to portray him, I became interested in the man. There is a brilliant documentary available on Youtube entitled The Times of Harvey Milk. Although I agree that the comparison to Martin Luther King is a bit much, Harvey Milk was a great man. He did a lot to help the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered movement.

I adore Gus Van Sant and am really looking forward to his take on the great Harvey Milk.
