Poll finds 23% of Texans think Obama is Muslim
A University of Texas poll to be released this week shows Republican presidential candidate John McCain and GOP Sen. John Cornyn leading by comfortable margins in Texas, as expected. But the statewide survey of 550 registered voters has one very surprising finding: 23 percent of Texans are convinced that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is a Muslim.
Obama is a Christian who was embroiled in a controversy earlier this year about his two-decade membership in Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. Yet just 45 percent of those polled identified the Illinois senator as a Protestant.
The Obama-is-a-Muslim confusion is caused by fallacious Internet rumors and radio talk-show gossip. McCain went so far at one of his town hall meetings to grab a microphone from a woman who claimed that Obama was an Arab.
The Texas numbers are unusual because most national polls show that just 5 to 10 percent of Americans still believe Obama is a Muslim — less than half the number of Texans who buy into the debunked theories.
The UT poll shows McCain running ahead of Obama statewide, with a 51 percent to 40 percent margin. Cornyn, a first-term Republican from San Antonio, leads Rick Noriega, a state representative from Houston, 45 percent to 36 percent. Another 14 percent of voters remain undecided in the contest.
The poll found that 89 percent of Lone Star State voters say the country's economic situation is worse than a year ago. And President Bush and Congress both get record low marks.
Just 34 percent of Texans approve of Bush's job performance — a big change for a former governor who won re-election 10 years ago with 70 percent of the vote. And Congress is even more unpopular:
Just 8 percent of Texas voters approve of the work being done on Capitol Hill.
The telephone poll was conducted by the Texas Politics Project and Department of Government at The University of Texas at Austin. The poll was conducted from Oct. 15 to 22, and had a margin of error of 4.2 percentage points.

As Colin Powell said, there is NOTHING wrong with being a Muslim. With a few crazy exceptions, we are mellow, peace-loving, excellent, tax-paying citizens of this country - and we love this country as much as people of other faiths. My husband's family is from "East Texas" (and I'll be the first to admit to everyone reading this, the majority of East Texas are very racist) and between those type of people, and the older, more racist generation, those were the 23% that think he's Muslim. Actually, I'm glad to know its only 23%, because around my area (I'm actually considered East Texas…UNFORTUNATELY,) Everyone is pro McCain. I wish people would stop worrying about religion, race, and being a lefty or a righty, and worry about the issues. I honestly believe Barack will pull us out of this hole, and if he doesn't, then thats our problem, because we as a Democracy voted him in (if he wins). obama offers tax checks to those that don't work so he can get votes. they vote for him because they want free money. they spend the money on nike's made in china->
obama along with a dem senate and congress raise taxes in order to accomplish this->
we are in a credit crunch, people can't get credit and start new businesses and so don't->
no new jobs->
employers are taxed higher to support obama's redistribution of wealth program and so cut jobs to remain profitable. many businesses fail, or ship jobs overseas->
there are MORE people competing for existing jobs at LOWER wages, and therefore; MORE people voting for a free handout the next election->
obama will offer MORE "relief" for the unfortunates that can't find jobs in the US and will have a BIGGER pool of voters the next election->

Re: ghosts – 17 Many respected Christian pastors believe AIDS was sent by God as a pox on homosexuals and the "immoral U.S.", and I assume the millions in their congregations don't get up and leave, and I haven't read any posts by you condemning them. Religious people speak for themselves. At least Wright's fears are based on prior heinous acts of our (the US) government. Google the Tuskegee experiment. After reading that, it's not hard to believe. Hell, we've seen many peope wanting Obama's head just, because he's black and "uppity" enough to run for POTUS. If they had government positions of power they would implement their hate, so once again, not hard to believe at all.

As a mother of three I too believe in sparing a mother's life. This is an extremely complicated issue. I would never vote for a human being (BO) who shows such lack of respect for the innocent. does anyone understand how ridiculous it is to assume the best thing for america is to take very large amounts of money from job providers, and give very small amounts of money to a majority of people that don't pay taxes; thus buying their votes, but costing them jobs and revenue for the US for times to come? they can kiss their asses goodbye before they know what happened. it's sad- this guy robbed US citizens of the america they were offered.

Many supporters at Palin rallies heard ugly vile things that they didn't agree with, but they didn't leave: they wanted to hear the rest of the message. You can't correct people, or help them to do better, if you don't know where they are going wrong! Additionally, Rev. Wright was prominent in Washington and there are many cowards, including Clinton, that had relationships with him that haven't owned up to it. Obama has made hypocricy very easy for his opponents by refusing to get in the dirt with them, and that's one reason why his supporters are so rabid - we're sick of the bs. McCain's ministers have just as many controversial sermons, but at the end of the day I don't care I just want just one of his supporters to articulate his platform without using the Obama crutch.

I moved to Houston after Hurricane Katrina and I can tell you that if Houston is any indication of how most Texans are, they are ignorant idiots. There's nothing wrong with him being a Muslim (even though he's not), but that's not the point. The point is that these are registered voters who are going to vote on Tuesday and yet they're entirely ignorant. If you don't know the candidates and the issues, then don't vote. An uninformed vote, in my opinion, is worse than not voting at all. It makes a mockery of the democratic process.
It should be the duty of everybody in a free and democratic nation to inform and educate themselves to participate in the voting process. When you don't, you're taking a crap on the good fortune that's been availed to you and that so many others around the world aren't lucky enough to have.

As hard as your comment about late term abortion is to read..it is really gross but totally true. BO voted three times to approve late term abortions. Now dems want to pass a law that allows young girls to have abortions without parental consent. Our kids can't even take a Tylenol at school without parental consent but it's suddenly ok to have a SURGERY without the parent's knowing?
