Former 49ers quarterback, Steve Young, the great-great-great grandson of Brigham Young, the second president of the Mormon church has supported the fight against H8te.

He is going against his church, that's a true maverick!

According to reports, there are NO to 8 signs posted in front of his fancy San Francisco-area home and his wife, Barbara, has donated $50,000 to defeat the hate-filled proposition.

Mrs. Young initially issued this statement regarding the family's stand on 8:

"We believe ALL families matter and we do not believe in discrimination, therefore, our family will vote against Prop. 8."

However, she later clarified her remarks with an updated statement:

"To expand on my earlier email, I am very passionate about this issue and Steve is completely supportive of me and my work for equality. We both love our Church and are grateful that our Church encourages us to vote our conscience. Steve prefers not to get involved politically on any issue no matter what the cause and therefore makes no endorsement."

We salute you, Barbara Young!

    5. 5

bravo to the Young family for standing up for whats right.

    6. 6

that is very Christ like of her…unlike most christians

    7. 7

Re: dawnoo – True that. More Christians should be like her, and actually have compassion and care about other people, even if you don't necessarily agree. Not like the hateful Christians who are damn hypocritical idiots.

Good lord Perez, do you ever proof read your posts? There are spelling and grammatical errors in almost everything you do.

    9. 9

Steve dont listen to your cooky wife. Vote Yes on 8

    10. 10

ALL pro athletetes are compelled to marry the tall blonde cheerleader/model types, right?

    11. 11

Good lord, you idiot!!! It has NOTHING to do with hate.

    12. 12

And by the way….it appears as though Steve Young does not support 8 and that makes you, Perez a liar and not one that can be trusted. Your headline is BS!!! Go to TMZ i guess if you want the truth. Your headline is crap!

    13. 13

Um, for all of the people commenting on this saying "Yes On 8," why are you spending your time on a blog run by a gay man? I mean, you even created an avatar and a screen name. Let's keep California equal. Even our Governater thinks Prop 8 is wrong. No on Prop 8!

    14. 14

Re: URnot1stdumbass – Um, don't you have better things to be doing?

    15. 15

      Re: ass

Isn't "proofread" one word, not two?

    16. 16

      You go, girl!

    17. 17

Re: terryeo – Good one, though I do agree with him!

    18. 18

Well, I guess he can kiss his LDS membership goodbye….I'm sure they'll excommunicate him once news of this gets back to SLC headquarters!

    19. 19

Re: Pogue Mahone – took the words right outta my mouth.
I was about the say the exact same thing. The "E" word.

      That's what Perez said…
It says in the title that Young doesn't support Prop 8…
      What's your deal?

      Re: URnot1stdumbass
      You are an idiot.
Of course Prop 8 has to do with hate, as well as ignorance and fear.

    23. 23

Wow! I am blown away by the statement but very pleased. I knew the Young family at one time and Steve was always an independent thinker. To make this statement is very much against LDS, Inc. but good for him! Maybe they will see that there is an entire world outside of the LDS beliefs.

    24. 24

      Good for them!

    25. 25

HE IS NOT GOING TO GET HIS MORMON MEMBERSHIP TAKEN AWAY, FOLKS. Mormons are uptight, sure, but they don't get kicked out for dissenting opinions. He'll be in fine standing with the church, and his only backlash will be some mormons who are pissed that his family spoke out.

    26. 26

and instead of thinking he needs to leave the church to find new ideas, the best thing would be for him to STAY in the church, and help to reform it from within. The more steve youngs they have in their ranks, the more the church can take a more progressive turn.

    27. 27

NO ON 8! The Constitution was NOT written for heterosexuals only! Get a clue! Yes on 8 people stop trying to interfere with our gay rights and stop trying to impose your values upon someone else! Controlling bitches! To the christian yes on 8 people, stop interfering with our free will! Go pray to your invisable god and teach your kids about creationism and talking snakes. Gulliable freaks.

    28. 28

This is amazing. I hope other Mormons will look at this and vote THEIR OWN conscience and not their churches.

"Steve prefers not to get involved politically on any issue no matter what the cause and therefore makes no endorsement."

    30. 30

As a utah mormon, please note that the majority of mormons DO NOT agree with prop 8! Nobody will be excommunicated from the church for this either. Steve Young is great for speaking out. NO to Prop 8!!!!

    31. Dabid says – reply to this

      31

Steve and Barbara Young are permitted their own political beliefs, even if they run contrary to the Church. They won't be ex'd.

The concern includes potential for future lawsuits if the Church opts not to allow for gay weddings. Charlene Hastings sued the Catholic Hospital that refused breast augmentation as part of gender reassignment surgery. The greatest issue is that the history of marriage is as a religious sacrament with the government now attempting to again change that definition. 14 March, 1860 House Report: "Whatever differences of opinion may exist as to whether marriage is a civil or a caanonical contract, the whole civilized world regards marriage of one man to one woman as being alone authorized by the law of God"

FYI A California Kindergarten teacher had the children sign a "gay pledge." Do you think that isn't opposition worthy? As an agnostic, I think the action appalling.

    32. 32

Ha, Ha "proof read". if you are going to dis someone for their spelling, better to learn how to spell yourself first.

    33. Dabid says – reply to this

      33

and then there is the continuation of the House Report which goes on to say:
"and that while the relation of husband and wife exists, neither can be lawfully married to another person."

With that in mind, women who had previously had the right to vote in Utah (second state to allow for Suffrage), where removed that right. The government also declared that children born into polygamy were illegitimate and not permitted right of inheritance. Men were also imprisoned for having more than one consensual wife. If you look at Texas, you will know that the FLDS, not the Mormon Church but a fundamentalist offshoot, has all their children removed even if they were monogamist because of association with polygamy. Note that almost all children were returned and the actual rate of abuse was lower than our population. Yes, somehow gay marriage is deemed acceptable while most of you sit by while actual rights, not benefits, are removed. Where were the gay marriage activists when the Texas authorities raided the compound? Silent. So long as it has to do with your beliefs you are vocal, but damn anyone else.

    34. 34

Woo Hoo! Much love to them! That is great!

    35. 35

This is really something. Any gay person can oppose it, because that's self interest. But when a straight football player conservative, hetero-family does this is truly remarkable!! Thank you Youngs! Now I see why There's Something About Mary crushed on you!

    36. Aphex says – reply to this

      36

Re: Dabid – The raid on the compound was because of child abuse. I don't see how that has any connection to gay rights. And rights are being removed from the California LGBT community if prop 8 passes. Civil unions will still be legal, which do have benefits. Prop 8 is about civil rights. Not about marriage.

    37. Aphex says – reply to this

      37

Re: Dabid – And homosexuality is not a belief. So that part of your theory does not even hold up. But seriously I really do believe that every human has the same rights as everyone else. And everyone has the same right to be happy. So if you're happiness comes from having more than one wife that's fine. But when it crosses the line into child abuse that's where we start to have a problem. It's not just about them having more than one wife. It's about them marrying off their children at such a young age. Or "giving" their minor daughters to much older members of the church for marriage. That's the part that prompts raids.

    38. 38

Around where I live, ELA mind you. Yes on 8 has gotten so much support. I'll be surprised to see this proposition being shot down.

    39. 39

Wow I give them so much credit considering they're probably taking a lot of heat from members of their church. It takes a lot of courage to go against the crowd if you think they are wrong.

    40. 40

This just goes to show that you can belong to a religion and not support all of their ideals. Good for her! :)

      41

I too am a Mormon that will vote NO on prop 8 also.

    42. 42

Nice job backpedalling there honey. First you say your family will be voting against prop 8 , then you say your husband makes no endorsement.

    43. 43

Yeah all you people in California should vote no to prob 8. i live in NZ and if gay marriage gets ban i will come and hunt you down with my annoying accent lol

    44. 44

Where's Jules and that dumb latina???

    45. 45

See, Perez, I TOLD you not ALL mormons are for prop 8. But, noooooo, you gotta spread the hate and make it seem that all mormons were evil bastards. You'd be SURPRISED at just how many mormons are AGAINST Prop 8!!!! Get your facts straight! ;)

    46. 46

      Good for you Barbara Young!

    47. 47

SCARED homosexuals are running around ripping prop 8 signs out - you can't have DEMOCRACY with the radical homosexuals - they don't want the people to vote - they want to dictate to the MAJORITY - well guess what assholes - for every NO on 8 sign - there are 5 YES on 8 signs - all over San Diego - In Carlsbad - at least that community can co-exist - the YES on 8 signs were left alone - and the ONE no on 8 was also left alone - that's democracy people. Yeah, I might not agree with you - but I'm not going to RIP down your sign - ONLY WEAK ASSHOLES do that - the closer to downtown you get - the more the homo assholes rip your stuff down. We are winning and the homo's CAN'T STAND IT!!! YES ON 8 ALL THE WAY!!! Two votes from us - YES on 8!!!

    48. 48

Jules sicko= Gays and their friends and families are not happy when republican trash funded mainly by mormon money goes to take their rights away. you bet ,i would rip down more then hate signs if I saw them, You are a sick mental case and if you hate gay people so much maybe this blog isnt for you man. Secondly its cool that Steve Young and his hot wife are supporting equal rights for gay people, Vote no to banning gay marriage. Vote no on 8 stop the hate

    49. 49

Three cheers for the Youngs!!!! A Mormon going against the church is a big thing.

Bravo to them for standing up against a discriminatory initiative — and against their Church for supporting such discrimination. Their support of equality and love is, truly, Christ-like.

    51. 51

Good :) . I was just watching the news, and was happy to see that some mothers with gay/lesbian children gathered together to speak out against prop 8. There was never a doubt in my mind about voting against prop8. Love is love.

    52. 52

Go Barb! Thank you for believing that loving relationships and families aren't exclusive to straight people.

    53. Rinny says – reply to this

      53

I am Mormon and I will be voting No on Prop 8….the LDS church won't excommunicate me or any other member that votes against this discrimination.

    54. 54

Best quarterback ever! I am so glad to hear this about him/his family =)

    55. 55

      JulesinSD B.O.~He Stink's's - are you a crazy person?

    56. 56

Re: JulesinSD B.O.~He Stink's – The bitch is back! You're such a radical christian!!

    57. 57

Steve is not voting no on prop. 8. He just loves his wife and is willing to let her believe what she wants. Why do you think she added to her statement? Steve told her to cuz he disagrees with her. Their votes will cancel each others and therefore, don't matter. Next.
