Fighting Against Prop 8

In addition to the efforts of Angelenos…

The people in San Francisco are taking a stand against injustice!

The San Francisco City Attorney's office is planning to challenge the validity of Proposition H8TE to ban gay marriage.

A rep for the City Attorney's office says City Attorney Dennis Herrera will file the legal challenge in the California Supreme Court.

In addition, the first lesbian couple to get married in Los Angeles County, after the Supreme Court threw out the gay marriage ban, are also planning to bring a lawsuit against Prop 8.

Let's hope a lot of others plan to do the same.

Something needs to be done!

This is about EQUALITY!

This is a civil rights issue!!!!!!

::It is NOT a civil "rights" issue. Even the bible says that marriage is between a man and a woman, and that men shall not lie with other men. If you want to be with someone, then be with them, but why is the title of "marriage" so important? I don't understand that.::

If you can't understand why a human being would want the same basic human rights everyone else in the country is entitled to, then you have a SERIOUS problem. Why do straight people want to marry? For the same reasons gays do. Believe it or not, they aren't that different. They marry for love, they want to make it official, and they have every right to. As for the Bible, there's a little thing written into our constitution (intentionally, by our forefathers, who also faced persecution and bigotry due to religion) called SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. Lastly, people in the Bible also believed the world was flat, and Jesus himself never said anything about homosexuality being wrong and encouraged loving your neighbors and doing onto them as they would do on to you. Not to mention, I know plenty of religious people who support gays and don't use their religion as a tool for hate, and there are more churches opening every day that allow gays into their congregations. So, you basically have no excuse, you're just a bigot.

    2. 202

You say equality and yet..the biggest religions in the world see being gay as wrong and yet…they get no equality according to your beliefs. I have my right to freedom of religion as well. FYI GOD DOESN"T CREATE GAYS! GOD DOESN"T CREATE GAYS! GOD DOESN"T CREATE GAYS! GOD DOESN"T CREATE GAYS!

Ah I got irritated and left something out of earlier post. "But we will let you lefties participate in opinion polls. Ok it's not the same as actually voting but you do get to express your opinion (in a way that isn't legally supported or binding)."

      agreed

    6. 206

      Re: karebear574

What, and who, exactly should they sue? California as a voting entity? Who do you sue, the people who voted (because pfft good luck) or, what, the people who counted the votes or arranged the vote in the first place?
What is it, suing the world because life isn't fair and your state didn't vote the way that's "fair", ie. your way????

If I started f*cking my brother or my dog or my vegetables, that means I should be able to marry them, right? As long as I can get off on it, I can marry it… equality for all!

    7. 207

GAYS VOTED IN MASS NUMBERS TO ELECT A BLACK MAN,AND BLACKS VOTED IN MASS NUMBERS TO TAKE RIGHTS AWAY FROM GAY PEOPLE. WOW. THIS VOTE IS CLOSE,BUT THIS IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE,DISCRIMINATION WONT STAND.

    8. 208

GENISIS I FEEL THE CHRISTIAN LOVE FROM YOUR POSTS, PEOPLE LIKE YOU SHOULD get ravaged with cancer, and that would still be too good for you. HATE LIKE YOURs is a mental disease.

    9. 209

CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICANS BROUGHT THIS HATE AGAINST GAY PEOPLE FUNDED BY MORMONS FROM UTAH AND CARRIED OUT BY UNEDUCATED BLACK TRASH, BUT THIS WILL CHANGE THE VOTE WAS 51 TO 49 PERCENT OR EVEN CLOSER. THIS WILL NOT STAND.

    10. 210

THESE SAME RELGIOUS FREAKS TRY TO PASS NOTIFICATION FOR UNDERAGE GIRLS WITH ABORTION EVERY OTHER YEAR. SO IF THE RIGHTWING REPUBLCIAN TRASH DONT GET THEIR WAY THEY JUST TRY IT AGAIN ANOTHER YEAR. THE GAYS AND THEIR FRIENDS WILL HAVE TO PUT THIS ON THE BALLOT AGAIN IN TWO YEARS,RAISE MORE MONEY AND MEANWHILE BRING FORTH TONS OF LAWSUITS. THIS HATE WILL NOT STAND,AND NEXT TIME IF OBAMA IS NOT ON THE BALLOT ALL THESE BIGOTED BLACKS WILL JUST STAY HOME AS USUAL.

    11. 211

      Re: Genesis
"If I started f*cking my brother or my dog or my vegetables that means I should be able to marry them, right?"

I think the issue with the dog and the veggies is that they aren't sapient beings capable of communicating to us their true intentions concerning marriage.

Not that I even wanted to look this up but it appears you *could* marry your brother if you are both adults and living in France, Belgium or the Netherlands.

    12. 212

VOICE OF REASONED HATE= Your lack of compassion for your fellow man tells me that you are a total scumbag, this issue isnt going away, so if that was your fantasy get a new one,but 8 years ago the vote was 61-39 this time its closer then 51-49 so it looks like californians are changing towards being more tolerant,i know thats something a scumbag like you can't relate to. THE PEOPLE VOTING WHO WERE UNDER 30 ,63 PERCENT OF THOSE VOTE TO LEAVE GAYS ALONE AND LET THEM KEEP THEIR MARRIAGES. THOSE OVER 65 YEARS OLD,59 PERCENT VOTE AGAINST GAYS,BUT THE BIGGEST GROUP VOTING AGAINST GAYS WERE BLACKS,70 PERCENT OF BLACKS VOTED AGAINST GAY PEOPLE,THATS THE REWARD FOR GAYS VOTING FOR OBAMA I GUESS.

    13. 213

It just doesn't seem right for the voice of the people to be ignored. You say you want equal rights, but now you are turning it into special rights by trying to over throw what was constitutionally won by democratic process.

    14. 214

Speaking as a heterosexual married woman with children, the fact that marriage assumes its integrity through persecution, cheapens and disgraces the institution.
This prop. should be declared unconstitutional. The state constitution is there to protect minorities, not to facilitate the majority abusing them with tide of politics.
And for you sick twists who compare it to bestiality, polygamy, and other arrangements that involve one group dominating another in an abuse of power, that is essentially what you are engaging in by supporting prop 8. Gay marriage is a union between two consenting adults.

Why can't fags marry? I'll tell you, BECAUSE WE ARE TRYING TO HAVE A CIVILIZATION HERE!! What in the fuck is wrong with people? Grow the hell up. You lost homos. No one wants to listen to your bullshit. You think dying your hair pink and calling yourself a queen is going to add credibility to your cause you stupid fuck Perez? Yeah, you have a right to express yourself anyway you want fatboy but keep in mind that you will not be taken seriously. Just like you have the right to suck off another man but keep in mind, you will not be taken seriously. You made your choice - NOW SHUT THE FUCK UP!!! Get way the fuck over your gay self assbite!

    16. 216

Funny stuff….. apparently now that the people HAVE spoken and it didn't turn out the way you wanted to, now you have to cry and whine about it. If you can't get things to turn out your way in California, it aint going to happen anywhere.

    17. 217

Re: knowitall – geez, and we're the haters? Hypocritical much?

    18. 218

First off let me say that I have no problem with Gay marriages.
I have plenty of friends and family members that are Gay.
I think its horrible what California did, give something that is made out to be so special then to take it away.
This makes them look like a bunch of ignorant assholes.

I do not support gay marriage but I do believe they deserve something of the sort.
In most every religion, race, country, etc the unity of marriage is between man and women. My unity and the definition of marriage is special to me its between my husband and I. I would be very hurt if the word marriage was used towards gay marriage. I think they need to come up with a new unique word and definition that only gays can use.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have your own wording and definition on something that you hold so very dear to your heart that no other “outsider” can use?

    19. 219

I am in no way trying to be hateful on this subject. I understand how horrible this is and how hurt everyone who didn’t want this to pass feels . I also understand that fighting and being hateful with each other is no way to come together and fight this.

Religion shouldn’t be brought into law making, but at the same time, if the word marriage is used when its been known as one meaning for so long it would be taking something very special away from me and others.

It would be like rewriting history, we cant rewrite history and block out certain things to please us just because we would like to forget the bad things in the past. We shouldn’t be able to redefine the meaning of marriage.

I’m all for equal rights and opportunity.
I don’t think law should decided who its ok for you to love and not.
Its wrong. I hope things will work itself out and we can meet in the middle with this.
I hope one day to see my cousin who is lesbian be able to love who she wants without hate and have a relationship that the law recognizes as the same as marriage.

    20. 220

Re: ONELOVE79 – California didn't give it to anyone… the Ban on gay and lesbian marriage was voted in before, then the supreme court OVERRULLED the vote and allowed it… now Californians have RE-voted it in… What is unfair is that it has to be voted in Twice simply because some didn't like the first outcome.

    21. 221

"Even the bile says" 'even the bible says"

repeat that a couple of time. got it? great!

Now go read the first amendment to the constitution claiming separation of church and state.

Good, now that we have that definition out of the window (no amendment stating a definition there)

Lets move down three points to the 14th amendment:

"there shall be NO discrimination based on GENDER"

okay…so, if there is no definition in the constitution between man and a woman, and we can't impose a definition based on religion–and since we can't discriminate on a group of people based on gender–and given the homosexuals ARE a group of people:

Well lookit that! It's a CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUE.

I knew the education system in this country was bad–but I didn't know the level of idiocity that truly existed…

People are not "made" gay–well okay, let me put it in a way you can understand:

They are MADE Gay–by GOD, since they are born that way.

And seeing as God doesn't make mistakes…

And one more thing: Jesus never said Homosexuality was bad.

Homosexuality is stated as bad in the same part of the bible where its says that Slavery is good.

Corinthians is under question given poor translation of the word "whore monger" for "gay"

and oh yeah–Jesus does say divorce is wrong–so all you "Christians" divorcing left and right: Take the beam out of your own eye before trying to remove the splinter out of mine.

      Re: drawdestiny
They gave gays the right to marry within a 4 month span and have now banned it which is takin the rights of those who got married away..

i think the whole process is messed up.. whatever they voted on b4 should of stuck and have no been overturned.. people need to vote and whatever the outcome they should just accept it and keep on going on with their lives with how ever they choose to.
try again in another 4 years with another vote, im sure one day it will not be banned. just look we now have our first black prez! but if everyone was told no and everyone "whined" about things and then wanted a recount bc things didnt go their way.. the world would be in more chaos then it already is.

    23. 223

The bible ALSO says you shouldn't have sex when you're on your period, punishable by death!! It says people should be stoned to death for stupid stuff too!!! SO stop picking and choosing little bits of the Bible to fit your DEMENTED, prejudice ideas!!! Why do you care if gays get married?!?!? How in the world does it affect you and your obviously unhappy lives?? It doesn't change anything about anything!!! MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS AND STAY OUT OF PEOPLE'S LIVES!!
Also, what's so funny is that Republican ideals are for less government - but you people sure like to intrude on people's personal lives and bodies!! SO HYPOCRITICAL!!

the people already voted, we know what we want

    25. 225

Ever heard of separation of church and state? You know, that little thing our country was founded on? Therefore, the Bible has no place in legislation. Re: heathermarie21

And can you show us where, in the U.S. Constitution the phrase "separation of church and state" appears? Here's a clue for your liberal public government indoctrination center school attending ass, it's not in the Declaration of Independence or The U.S. Constitution. This phrase is attributed to Thomas Jefferson and was contained in a letter written to a Danbury Baptist minister. The basic assertion was that our founding Fathers(who libs denounce as bigoted slave owning white males, so why they want to actually listen to the founding fathers on this point and not on so many others is mind boggling) essentially wanted to protect religion from government not the other way around.

I was there tonight in SF and protested. I will fight this right. Straight people can kiss my ass. Even if we Gay people can't win (which we will) then we all agreed that there should be a prop passed where divorce is illegal..

    27. 227

Now go read the first amendment to the constitution claiming separation of church and state. Re: DinaDins13

You don't know what you are talking about. Why don't YOU go read the first amendment of the Constitution, which clearly does NOT state anything about "separation of state". God, I hate ignorant libs who don't even know what the Constitution says. In fact, I will give you a $5 bill if you can show me where exactly the phrase "separation of Church and state" appears in the Constitution.

The bible ALSO says you shouldn't have sex when you're on your period, punishable by death!! Re: laaaaame

They gave gays the right to marry within a 4 month span and have now banned it which is takin the rights of those who got married away.. Re: ONELOVE79

Yeah, but only after this issue had already been addressed once before and voted on, only to have the will of the people overturned by activist judges at the behest of the gay mafia political action committees.

    30. 230

APPARENTLY YOUR MOTHER, FATHER, BROTHER, SISTER, STILL HOPES SOMEDAY YOU'LL BE STRAIGHT THATS WHY THEY VOTED FOR PROP 8

    31. 231

i pray someday people will look back on the civil rights fight for our community, and be disgusted like the majority of people today are dicussed with racsism in the past. we look at blacks not being able to vote, and inter-racial marriages being illeagle and think that's crazy. when the fight is over and won, (and it will be!!), history will look at this movement as they do the civil rights movement for affrican americans. who has a black president now?! suck it you biggots!!! our day will come.

    32. 232

MARRIAGES as a whole should be abandoned by the state as recognition of a faith-based bonding ceremony. ALL MARRIAGES. Adam/Eve, Adam/Steve, doesn't matter at all. It comes down to civil co-habitation contracts, distribution of responsibilities, compensation, employee benefits…nobody should need the state or fed gov. to tell them their marriage is legal or not. Just define the parameters required for a civil contract.

Aside from that, BOO FREAKIN' HOO, YA HOMOS.

    33. 233

it disgusts me how people respond to this kind of bullshit. i just want every person out there to think what it would be like to be totally in love with someone and want to spend the rest of your life together and you CANT because SOME STUCK UP ASSHOLE thinks that is isnt right. who is to say who you can marry and who you cant? no matter what it is fucking discrimination!!!!! it makes me sick that you people take gay marriage as some sort of plague that should be avoided. i has nothing to do with you and no affect on your life! and i think it is total bullshit that prop 8 could pass with barely half of the votes. how can california give somthing and then take it away? i do not think that this should even of been voted on whatsoever. gay marriage is not the end of the world. all of you narrow minded assholes need to get the fuck over it. "yeah california has spoken with the majority vote"… fuck that. i actually admired california when it allowed gay marriage and now they are taking it away just like that. i think something like this should be left alone. this is a country that has been historically evolving from all sorts of discrimination within the last century. now lets act like it.

    34. 234

Marriage is uniquely hetero because it's a man and a woman. Domestic partnership is uniquely gay because it's same-sex. Heteros can't be domestic partners, because that distinction is reserved for same-sex couples to give them rights of spouses.

Attorney General Jerry Brown changed the original title for Prop 8 from "Limit on Marriage" to "Eliminates RIGHT of Same-Sex Couples to Marry." This controversial wording actually was taken to court by the Yes on 8 people, but the Court allowed it to remain. As a result of that misleading wording (as defined in Family Code 297-297.5), support for Prop. 8 dropped 8 points. Anytime you're perceived to be "eliminating someone's rights," that's never popular. Brown tried to dupe Californians with the wording.

Given that the Famly Code sec 297-297.5 outlines the rights of same-sex couples in a domestic partnership as having the rights of spouses in a traditional marriage, I guess I'm not clear on exactly what rights gays would be GAINING by changing the definition of marriage? With Prop 8 passing, they certainly aren't having any rights "eliminated." Is it just for the semantics of being "married?" Well, BINGO. That is the core reason that the majority of California wants it to remain marriage in the traditional sense: because of its traditional meaning. I guess if you "really" want to be married, you'll have to marry someone of the opposite sex.

Quit attacking marriage and leave it alone.

    35. 235

And no, it is not your "civil right" to not be offended.

    36. 236

Re: equalitynothate – Well then it's odd that during the debates, both Obama AND Biden said that they supported traditional marriage, and wouldn't do anything to "compromise" that. Were they just talking out their asses to get elected? Is this the kind of doubletalk we can expect for the next 4 years? Holy crap.

    37. 237

The gay mafia didn't count on the fact that blacks are more likely to be churchgoing than most white folk. So congrats, you got the blacks to the polls to vote for your "saviour" but now you are pissed at blacks because they didn't buy into your "gay is healthy, natural and right" mantra. So now your strategy is to denounce blacks as "bigots" and as being full of "hate" in order to manipulate and coerce them into seeing things your way. So manipulative…the passing of Prop 8 couldn't have happened to a nastier buch of people.

    38. 238

Re: heather2010 – who says, anybody should be able to marry if they love each other..

    39. 239

I don't have anything against gays but Perez crams gays down our throats! (pun intended!)

    40. 240

something was done….they put the vote to the people and the people voted….just like we did for the president……this goes to show you…for as liberal as california is - there are millions of people who still want traditional values…….and you will never convince me that this is a civil right issue……the color of your skin is a civil rights issue, gender is a civil rights issue, who you sleep with is not……

    41. 241

Oh and just to let you know, we all have EQUAL rights in America right now. You have the right to marry someone of the opposite sex and so do I. But NEITHER of us have to RIGHT to marry someone of the SAME sex.
I'm not saying I'm against it, but I hate it when people say the rights aren't equal, b/c no one is getting rights someone else isn't. Because they are the same for everyone.
Yes, there needs to be talk and hopefully laws about gay marriage and put into place giving them rights. I believe in that that completely. But I just hate it when people say they don't get the same rights as 'heterosexuals' do. Because, when you break it down, we all have the same rights, and we are all limited just the same.

    42. 242

Let me be completely clear here. I personally do not believe in gay marriage, nor do I think it's a civil rights issue; I believe marriage should be between a man and a woman; the way it was meant with ADAM and EVE. The purpose of marriage was to pro-create, and the last time I checked, that required 2 genitals with opposite plumbing.

But I also believe that if two people of the same sex want to be together, that's no one's business but their own; and it's between them and God. I can't throw stones living in a glass house, and neither should "officials". Like I said, that's between that couple and God.

    43. 243

Seriously, I think you harmed this cause Perez. You need to keep it shut next time.

    44. 244

      I hope prop 8 stays

    45. 245

Someone cannot say that they are comfortable with homosexuality and at the same time condemn gay marriage. They might try to make an argument about the sanctity of marriage and family values, but it is just simply a cover for their homophobia. Proposition 8, and all of the anti-gay marriage referendums are about maintaining that gays do not deserve the same rights as other people. This is the same as saying that the world would be a better place if homosexuality did not exist. Will America be the last advanced nation to accept gay marriage and offer the same rights to gay people as to others? This is inevitable at some point as the dialogue has already been open, I am confident of that. Resistance only makes the movement stronger- one in ten people, think about it.

    46. 246

So regardless of what the majority of Californians say it doesn't matter right fatso. THE MAJORITY VOTED AGAINST IT. That is what this country is built on. Majority rules. Go home. Get over it. Go away. Marriage is between a man and a woman

    47. 247

All of you who are saying that H8 passing is acceptable because the majority of the voters chose that option: So if the majority suddenly voted to rescind the Fourteenth and Fifteenth amendments that would be ok too?

I guess our new motto is "majority=rules, minority=lose".

    48. 248

First off, there is supposed to be separation between church and state. And second, The Bible is not a law book in the USA. The United States is supposed to be a land of freedom where people of many faiths are welcome to come and worship freely. The bible may be your laws for Christians, but it is not the final word (nor should it have any say) in United States laws.

    49. 249

Re: MARYPOPPINS – This is a silly comment but it is true. First gay marriages, then polygamists, then pedofiles, then beastiality. Allowing homosexuals to marry opens too many dangerous doors.

    50. 250

    52. 252

      Re: kflipflop

Homophobia suggests a "fear" of homosexuals. I'm not afraid of queers I'm just sick of them trying to force me to accept their freaky wackass lifestyle as "normal", "healthy" and "natural". You enjoy taking it in the ass, fine, but DO NOT try to tell me up is down and wrong is right.

    53. 253

I'm so sick of proposition 8 I could puke

    54. 254

Im not saying this to start shit or have some one call me ignorant or any shit like that, but for all of you who say "people are just born gay", then whats with the, let's say men, that grow up, marry a woman, have kids, then in middle age they decide, "hey! I'm going to leave my wife for a man."
Just curious. Are those types of men/women born gay and live in denial? Or do they just realize later in life that they want to have a partner of the same sex?
Another note too for all of debating who has it worse, blacks or gays….have any of you read about that thing…oh geez…what was it called? Oh, um, yea THE HOLOCAUST. Gays in Europe were wrangled and had to put up with the same bullshit the Jews did. Read Wikipedia, read other websites about the Holocaust….
Blacks dealt with years and years of oppression/segregation etc. Gay people were persecuted in the Holocaust and continue to be shunned and harrassed just because they fall in love with someone of the same sex. So in my eyes both groups got the short end of the stick. Do you really think it makes sense or helps anything buy going back and forth with "I'm black! My people had it worse!" vs "I'm gay! We get it worse than you nowadays!"
Don't bother to reply, because what you have to say won't change the facts

    55. 255

As to the defense "they're born that way". Well, I was "born that way" (gay). I CHOOSE to be straight in honor and respect of my Christian God. Do I suffer, of course I do at times. That's life. I have a wonderful husband and beautiful son and I couldn't ask for more. Do I still think about women? Absolutely. But I know that road is against my beliefs and morals.

BTW, did you know that pedofiles, people in love with their pets and all perverts of that nature claim to be "born that way". Of course they are!! All are born with sin. It's about repentance people. Self control. Christianity. I am so proud of the CA for voting FOR Proposition 8!! It just proves that there are still morals in this country.

    56. 256

Why does everybody have to holler "injustice"! This seems to be the case everywhere these days. Just be who you are and quit worrying about everything else. My gosh, everything these days are about blacks, gays, mexicans! Yall do nothing but scream that you are being "injusticed". Don't yall have jobs? or anything better to do? I guess you don't have to have a job because Obama is going to take from me to give to you now. So you have more time to scream "injustice", poor me, everyone is picking on me.

    57. 257

We are born male and female then we CHOOSE to change that if we want. Just like you choose to be gay, you weren't born that way!!! Grow the fuck up Perez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    58. 258

This is most certainly a civil rights issue! I cannot believe that some people are so ignorant to think that discriminating against same sex relationships is still ok. Remember when an african-american president was an impossible dream? All you haters need to shut the hell up and worry about answering for yourself when judgement day comes. I'm sure you'll have more to answer to than who you chose to love. Hang in there…

The people who are saying that 'Maybe McCain should go to court over the election results, trying to compare it to Prop 8, are missing a fundamental point–MCCAINS RIGHTS ARENT BEING VIOLATED BY THE ELECTION RESULTS.

Well, perhaps badgering is the only way to get what's fair. It worked for blacks' civil rights, no?

      Re: onlyme

Your comparisons are pitiful. You're saying you can't call green blue, yet you're telling gay people to come up with a term for green, but don't call it green.

    69. 269

I consider myself a Christian but I don't see why it's my business if two adults want to get married. If the government can't impose a religion on people and allows them to practice their beliefs, why is this any different? Gay people aren't hurting me and I'm not sure what people are so afraid of? I continue to read my bible and I know it has some powerful messages of love but I also know that it's been used to perpetuate slavery, sexism, and racism. Granted, I can't agree with everything many supporters say…I think being gay is a choice. However, if I have the choice to marry any man I want, of any color (also once illegal), I don't see how this is any different.
