MORE on Grey's Anatomy's Latest Gay "Scandal"!

| Filed under: TV NewsGay Gay GayLGBT

As we mentioned earlier, Grey's Anatomy is getting rid of one of the two gay characters they have on the show.

Actress Brooke Smith, who plays Dr. Erica Hahn as the girlfriend of Dr. Callie Torres, will no longer be on the ABC program

Smith's last episode will be this Thursday.

Talk about a quick removal!!!

And, her character wasn't even written out properly or given any closure. She just walks to her car in this next episode and is never seen again.

And, according to reports, "Those who work on the ABC series [say] that the gay-themed storylines and gay characters are being downplayed and even erased from upcoming scripts."

Apparently the choice wasn't that of the show's creator, Shonda Rhimes, but that of the execs high up at ABC.

In a statement, Rhimes says:

“Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it's not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show – Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run. The impact of the Callie/Erica relationship will be felt and played out in a story for Callie. I believe it belittles the relationship to simply replace Erica with ‘another lesbian.’ If you'll remember, Cristina mourned the loss of Burke for a full season."

So until the real reason for the firing gets leaked, why do U think they got rid of gay character Dr. Hahn?

didn't we go over all this YESTERDAY!!!

  3. 3

ABC execs are stuck in a time when same sex relationships were to be kept on the DL..

  4. 4

    grey's lost me last season……….bores

  5. 5

obviously, a high level conspiracy to make the show NOT all about lesbian characters. An immediate investigation should be launched. Speaking of launched, I think my pants just did…

  6. 6

WTF? This is the same shit you posted like twice already. Quit repeating shit. There was no chemistry between the 2 characters. Maybe there was some drama as to why they got rid of her character, though. Quit speculating!

  7. 7

Didn't he write about this already???

  8. nubsy says – reply to this

because they were the most awkward and unbelievable couple ever. it has nothing to do with the gay part of it. they just didn't have any chemistry and didn't seem real. it must have taken the producers a while to realize audiences hated dr hahn and hated her character even more now that she "sees leaves"

  9. 9

Maybe the gay was too mainstream, a little "too close to home".

If you look at most of the gay people portrayed on tv, it's 99% of the time portrayed as over-the-top. It's a shame though, I live and breathe Grey's and was enjoying watching this relationship develop, especially with Callie O'Malley's (lol) confusion over how she felt. Sad times indeed :-(

  10. 10

There is NO issue with getting rid of her for being GAY. Dr. Hahn and Callie are boring as a story line. Why does this have to always be a Gay issue? Will Grey's always be under scrutiny with the Gay community?

  11. 11

I am not a homophobe. I did not mind the lesbian couple in the show but I did mind the raunchy storylines as I mind them with hetero and homo couples in all shows and movies. I don't feel that shows and movies need to have raunchy sex scenes to get more viewers. They just don't.

  12. 12

because mainstream America is SICK of having gay relationships pushed down our throat by liberal Hollywood!

  13. 13

I think it's because heterosexual people are uncomfortable with having two women make out in their livingroom. Where we live out kids don't go to school on Fridays, so my son is up at that hour. I was glad he was downstairs when they showed a scene of them kissing. Perez, I know you find homosexuality as normal, but it's actually OUT of the norm and I don't think we need to be bombarded with it constantly.

  14. 14

I never really liked her character but I think it's sad how she just has to leave like that.

  15. 15

Maybe she was fired for being so damn ugly!

  16. 16

if they were both "hot" and "thin" they would still have a lesbo relationship. but "noone" wants to see to middle aged "unattractive" women talk about their cooters… Plus, Sloan and Callie make a better couple!

  17. 17

It's truly sad that you are so concerned about why an actor that no one had heard of, was fired from a role, just because it was a make-believe lesbian on tv.
    How about "who cares?"

  18. Amy says – reply to this

I don't think they should have fired her, but there was no chemistry between the characters.

  19. 19

Re: AmberKat – Seriously! The storyline sucked. Get over it. What are you, the new Gay Al Sharpton?

  20. 20

the story line wasn't really going anywhere, callie didn't even officially come out of the closet so we can't technically call her gay. she was conflicted on last weeks episode because she still enjoyed doing it with sloan! but just because it's a gay character everybody is up in arms. greys did an ep with gay military men a season or two ago, it doesn't seem like anybody on the show is dissing sexual preference.

  21. 21

The whole point of network television is to create an audience in order to increase ad revenue. ABC and the creators of Grey's felt that eliminating an unpopular character and storyline might help do that, so they're going forward with that. The fact that the character is gay is entirely incidental to the logic behind the move. This isn't an anti-gay thing, this is a ratings and revenue thing.

  22. 22

OMG don't they know everyone must be gay otherwise its discrimination. My goodness is your life all about sex (or your lack thereof)

  23. 23

has to be because of the gay factor!
hahaha. i love it. you are so damn paranoid.

  24. 24

it was just lame chemistry, a mediocre character, and an odd storytline to start. Nothing about lesbians. Hell I want L WORD religiously. I just always felt so utterly lukewarm about Brooke. Very mundane looking and seeming. I think they ditched it ultimately because it just didn't make for an interesting avenue or sub plots…not because it was a gay storyline….but a dull one that wasn't working.

  25. 25

Hey Perez you stupid moron. You went out and tried to get all the black people out to vote but when the blacks went to the polls, they voted down gay marriage by 70 percent. Blacks just don't like gays. You're plan back fired. You must feel real stupid now. Barack only mentioned gay marriage once but never brought the topic up again. Wasn't that the whole point of getting Barack elected? So he would help you with your gay issues? Looks like you lost Perez and I love that you lost because I hate you.

  26. 26

The relationship was weird, it didn't have anything to do with being gay. Callie wasn't a convincing gay, up until now her character was all about dudes. Especially with the McSteamy character, which seems more of a "realistic" potential relationship.

  27. 27

I also read that they are bringing in a new character by the end of the month (the blond chic from Alias) and her character was suppose to be a lesbian and now she isn't. So something is going on over there in the homophobe studios that is ABC.

  28. 28

1st Brooke Smith is an awesome actresses and I enjoyed watching her on both Grey's and Weeds. However, I did feel the disconnect between her and Erica characters to the point of it appearing forced and akward - it certainly is not a reflection of her acting abilities - the fit for her within this show was just not right. I wish her all the best.

  29. 29

I have to say I didn't feel the vibe between them. Also Erica was just really annoying to me and I LOVE Callie and think she deserves better then ornery Dr. Hahn. I am very happy she is being written off the show and I don't feel like it has anything to do with her being a lesbian. Also what's up Perez this is exactly what you wrote yesterday, I love you girl but you got to give us NEW info. YES WE CAN!

  30. 30

The chemistry between the 2 characters was so strained and awkward I never bought it. It was like a struggle for Callie to actually get with her in the first place then she had to sleep with Sloan to get tips??? Clearly the character wasn't a true lesbo. The story line was weak.

  31. 31

Re: TwoGoofballs – I agree with you. I couldn't care less if a person or character they play is straight, gay, bi, whatever. I like Grey's but these past few seasons it has become nothing but sex. Don't get me wrong, I watch shows that there is sex in pretty much every episode…True Blood…but I know that when I am watching that show the kids need to be in their rooms asleep, and with Grey's being on a regular channel and a time when kids are still awake, that is a problem.

Dr. Hahn's character was simply crappy. It worked for a little bit last season with the whole Christina aggrivation thing but it just doesn't work as a relationship for Callie. Plus, why take one of the actual normal size, beautiful women on television and make her character gay? What, after being married to George and sleeping countless times with McSteamy and now suddenly she discovers she is gay or bi or whatever.

  32. 32

Honestly I don't think it had anything to do with them being a homosexual couple. They were just really awkward together and the chemistry never worked. Plus most people hated Dr. Haan on the show because she was a serious downgrade from Dr. Burke. She just wasn't cutting it…

  33. 33

I watch the show, every thursday, and those 2 just don´t have chemestry together, and from many fans of the show, erica is just an unpopular charecter, nothing to do about the lesbo relationship, but how she is/was with christina, and she is just a pain in the ass!

  34. E59th says – reply to this

    Re: DisabledMess

Obviously you care enough to create a nick, read the article and post your thoughts.

  35. 35

  36. 36

Because Calli and Erica had absolutely no chemistry. The show wasn't interesting anymore, because these two were unconvincing in their roles as lesbian lovers. Very bad writers and even worse acting. There was no need to put lesbian scenes inti Grey's Anatomy! It destroyed the show!!!

  37. 37

Why does everything on here have to turn into a "gay" issue? It's getting kind of old.

  38. 38

    Lets stop watching.

  39. 39

Re: nubsy – I agree with you. The couple didn't fit right. It was bordering gross and forced. It was a good move.

  40. 40

I always found it wierd when they started using her more in the plot, she was better as a secondary character. I never could stop staring at her crooked teeth when she talked. I didn't like her at all and will not miss her.

  41. 41

Can we please, please, please STOP making everything a gay issue. Charactors leave shows ALL THE TIME. Just because this person was one half of a lesbian couple does not mean oh my god, ABC hates lesbians. Geez….

  42. 42

I just heard about this and am shocked. The lesbian storyline was what kept me tuned in because it was so juicy & I think both actresses are great. I can't understand what the heck Brooke Smith could have done to merit getting fired. It's sad.

  43. fiona says – reply to this

    Get over it.

  44. 44

    The real reason?

ABC is owned by Disney, and Disney needs to remain "Family Friendly", of course. Probably some Prop H8ters pulled the plug on it, among other groups like that.

  45. 45

As I stated in an earlier post when you were wondering why the ratings were down on this show, conservative viewing audiences such as those who watch Grey's, do not look favorable on two lesbians on the show. The medical community in general on a show or in real life is very conservative, so I could of seen this a mile away that the lesbian thing would not fly.

  46. 46

It's a shame, because I really liked her character. Whats up with ABC?

  47. 47

that's the girl from my favorite movie Silence of the Lambs! The girl that was in the pit held by Buffalo Bill who Jodie Foster rescued out! lol.

  48. 48

  49. 49

Seriously this is what I heard yesterday morning from my mom….Apparently a million conservative people wrote in to Disney (who owns part of ABC) and complained that the gay storyline was offensive and inappropriate and that if ABC doesn't kill the storyline, they will boycott Disney. This of course, on the morning of the election was hushed so you can't find the truth out here on the internet. Not sure where my mom heard it but her news sources are usually the real deal since she's well, in her 40s and a smart lady!

Something like this can be the only explanation they would so unexpectedly cut out Hahn.

  50. 50

Re: iJenna – That must be it! Considering that Brothers & Sisters, a show that features prominent gay characters and even had a gay wedding, is also on ABC doesn't take a dump on your theory at all! Keep fighting those nonexistent battles there, champ!

  51. 51

Re: HannahG – ABC is not homophobic. Have you ever watched All My children? they had the transgender Zarf on there and now Bianca and her partner are getting married. So quit the shit that ABC is homophobic. there was no chemistry and the storyline sucked!

  52. 52

So what. This show fell the F#*K off once Isiah was gone. Bring him back and let's squash that old bulls#*t!

  53. 53

Dr. Hahn has been painful to watch from the moment she became a cast member. It has NOTHING to do with the fact that her character is gay. I think anyone who actually watches Greys will agree that Hahn is awkward and annoying.

I completely agree with the creators reason - she has no chemistry with any of the characters. When she was crushing on McSteamy it felt forced, same with Torres. Even friendship-level relationships are forced.

She just didnt mesh with the cast, and while I'm feel bad for the woman that plays her - I am so happy to see her go.

  54. 54

the story was boring, they had absolutely no chemistry, and Hahn was an insufferable bitch to everyone around her… it had nothing to do with her being a gay character.

  55. 55

BECAUSE SHE IS SO FRICKING UGLY! Who wants to see two heifers mating? Blech.

  56. 56

    This sucks!!

  57. 57

Because Prop 8 passed and they want to make sure they get as many viewers as possible.

  58. 58

    she was hella boring

  59. 59

ABC Sucks, that's the real reason!
The keeps the likes of Elisabitch Hasselbeck and fire real actors that make them real coin.

Shonda needs to grow some and speak the truth.

  60. 60

The comments here are so homophobic. When was the last time a character was just suddenly fired from a TV show because of lack of chemisty?? The usual thing would be to ..oh I dont know, change the relationship by writing a different story? America you are fucked, you have just elected a black presedent which is such a step forward but you think 2 normal looking woman sharing a few chaste kisses on prime time tv is disgusting? The was Brook Smith was treated is completly unacceptable. Reading these commets is fucking depressing. I´m a lesbian and for once I have a story line in a tv show I could relate to and its snached away because of preduce. I can imagine the people commenting on Brooks and Saras appearence are stunningly atractive, yeah righ or maybe your just avarage looking like most people. You just dont get it, once a corperation starts making decissions like this and no one reacts, where does it end? Haters.

  61. Galen says – reply to this

Hasn't the gay fad about run it's course? It was all well and good back in the will and grace days, but when they started writing it in to drama scripts it became pretty lame.

  62. 62

Re: janebird – OMG…- was thinking the EXACT same thing!!! Everytime I see that chick, I CANNOT get past the whole "Precious…" (member the dog?) and Buffalo Bill thing….just cant do it…

  63. 63

I don't think ABC does not like gay people. Ugly Betty is hugely popular and they don't downplay homosexual relationships. The truth is that they were absurdly boring. I honestly would change the channel every time they came on. They did nothing for me and their chemistry was terrible. It was like watching Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie make out.

  64. 64

because this storyline sucks anyone that watches the show would see that

  65. 65

fuck perez–GET SOME NEW MATERIAL!! U DID THIS ONE ALREADY– YAAAWWNN! you should be talking bout the new ARMY doctor– his HOT! & his not gay!! NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO DO WITH PROP 8 NOT PASSING!!! the story like sucked n they acted dumb- callie needs to with sloan already–

  66. 66

OMG WTF. That is such a great storyline. It offers great dialogue and really shows Callie's confusion and exploration of herself.

This pisses me off. F-ck ABC. Seriously. SCREW EM.

I love the Callie-Haun love story.

  67. 67

SO okay…once again a character is just "disappearing?"

WTF - this really annoys me. Way to go Grey's Anatomy, in just three seasons you are already on the track of ER - "same story different character."

I want to say I love this show, because I do…but this sort of "disappearing character act" is ridiculous.

  68. 68

I don't think it is because of the "gay" angle at all. I think it is because of that freaky lazy eye she's got……

  69. 69

Well, ABC already has a gay couple on Brothers & Sisters and there's an extremely open lesbian relationship between Bianca and (whatever her girlfriend's name is) on All My Children. They probably figured they had filled their "quota" of same sex relationships! Seems kind of stupid to me, really, to just drop it so suddenly. I think it would have worked better if Callie had made the decision that she wasn't comfortable in the relationship because, frankly, that seems to be the way it was being played anyway. Mostly, though, I'm sure it was a play to the larger, hetero audience that they are losing in droves anyway. Cowards!

And speaking of AMC, I'm surprised I haven't heard more about that relationship Bianca has going! There was such a huge fuss when the show Van Hansis is on (is it Guiding Light or As the World Turns….I don't actually watch the show he's on) had one little kiss between him and his boyfriend. I happened to turn AMC on the other day and saw Biana & her girlfriend seriously going at it in multiple scenes but never heard one peep about it anywhere else! What's up with that?

  70. 70

Because Erica is a crappy character and Brooke Smith plays a crappy lesbian.

  71. 71

Dr. Hahn was too boring for an in depth story line. They should get Callie someone hott! Everyone else has a hottie, so why not Callie too?

  72. 72

I don't have a problem at all with gay relationships on TV…I think it's great! But Torres and Hahn just didn't connect at all. It was awkward to watch and the two of them together just didn't make sense or mesh whatsoever. So, I'm sorry she's out of a job, but glad that whole weird awkwardness of the show will be done with.

  73. 73

hmm gay or not gay, that chick is fug.
I think she was just written out because she isn't good looking.

  74. 74

I don't watch the show but I hate it when tv execs cancel a show that people are into or get rid of a good character set without notice. Last time it really hurt for me was when Willow lost Tara on Buffy in a gunshot.

  75. linzw says – reply to this

I think they got rid of her because the actress playing Hahn is completely unlikeable. Sorry, but I just don't dig her. Shady, Shady writing her out like that though. Maybe new characters/actors. Any opportunity for diversification should be taken!

  76. plano says – reply to this

Maybe because most regular (in your vernacular - haters) are tired of having the gay agenda shoved down our throats, every night, every freaking program. I enjoy watching lesbians just as much as any other guy but not with our families - eeewww

  77. nafu says – reply to this

Why are gay people so sensitive about every little thing. Always looking for something to whine or complain about or alway playing the victim. This is why gays have a heard time getting accepted. If you gay, than I have no problem with you, just don't be so sensitive and always think you being treated unfairly. Just be!

  78. 78

Seriously, I love gay people, well, because they're people. I've had my own same-sex relationship as well. But the thing is, the world is not ready for it's takeover, and when I say takeover, I mean EVERYONE BEING GAY ALL OF A SUDDEN. Ever since more and more people started coming out, and then being flamboyant(sp) about it. Made it seem like a all fun, hip, stylish. It represented a partying lifestyle to many. Moooore people started doing it. Being gay, or Bi is like the new black. People are not only experiencing, they're being seriously gay coming from nowhere.

  79. 79

Young kids, teens, young adults, adults, seniors. It would be really confusing to children when trying to be taught at school. That wouldn't be fair to parents, teachers, or the kids for that matter, especially if they have strong convictions on the issue. While it's definately natural for some(no doubt about it), it's not for hundreds of the otheres who are clearly not genuine about it. And yes, I am one. I realized this lifestyle is not for me, like at all. You can call me a hypocrite, in some ways I am. But I feel like why fix what's not broken? Gays have been living their lives together, in unions, with children for ions. You can work your way around having to have the "marriage" piece of paper. Save tons of money. Don't make it a civil issue. Everyone should just chill and live in the moment of positive energy the world is experiencing, THE WORLD! If it's the right thing to do, things will come in due time. Don't ruin this for us. OK, I'm done, I just bored myself rambling. But seriously though. It's not that deep. The world melting is deeper…you wouln't have to worry about any injustices when we're all incinerated by the sun.

  80. 80

Wow, I'm high. I just realized I posted my previous comments in the wrong section, but, same difference. Yes, I strongly believe they got rid of her because someone, somewhere, is trying to quell and call the raging mass of gays that's trying to overtake the world. Everyone is trying to be gay.

  81. 81

to all those ppl who say it is not normal: for one.. you are not gay so you dont think its normal but for some it is. two.. it is normal bcuz how many gay ppl are there? DUH if it wasnt normal it would be like a disease that only like 1% of ppl have and trust that there are more gays. three… fuk off.

anyway… i think that its because the relationship in general was boring. and because no offense but hahn was not a good actress. idk… look at what happend with isaiah washington n t.r knight.

  82. 82

its not even real who cares

  83. KDick says – reply to this

There has to be something else going on…
I mean, Brothers & Sisters is on ABC and look at the gay relationships on there. Kevin and Scotty are married on the show and kiss frequently. This whole Grey's gay scandal just doesn't make sense to me.

  84. 84

  85. 85

Re: SaraStar – Yes. lol. The gays use everything as a cry of "injustice" and "inequality". Yeah? Well, there was a longstanding extermination order against the people of my church up until the 1980's; I'm asian: people are allowed to make BLATANT racial attacks against us with no punishment all the time. We don't go around tooting that horn though, do we? Get over it, you crazy homos (and I say that in the sweetest way).

  86. 86

Why is this news…because she was playing a lesbian on a show? So the network decided to go another way with these characters who happened to not be gay, but bi. Why is it Perez that you always try and play up some conspiracy when it comes to this kind of shit? It's a fucking tv show…need we all remind you?

  87. 87

Stop playing the gay card. Not everything is discrimination against gays and lesbians! It's Hollywood — she was fired because she is plain looking at best. It's a tough industry, but she chose it. I don't feel sorry for her, she's made more money doing less work than I do!

  88. 88

greys anatomys script sucks now! its not the same as the first 3 seasons. characters go on & off the show like nothing. they need to be like friends and stick with the same characters!

  89. 89

    Gees stop feeling so victimized!
maybe its not about whether its a straight or gay relationship
it could be that it just didnt work! and besides they had no chemistry!
    quit your bitchin'

  90. tetzy says – reply to this

Smart move. You can't rely on the fag audience for big ratings - even if EVERY TV watching gay tuned into Grey's that would only account for 10 percent of the potential audience. Remember Ellen's sitcom? - she came out as gay & the audience realized they didn't care to see gay characters in gay situations. Simple math & a good choice on Rhymes' part.

  91. 91

it's all politics, they want to be quite about the gay relationship, there afraid there ratings will drop if they show gay love on there show…simple

  92. 92

Re: Jenisis – What the fuck are you talking about you fucking moronic cunt??? I wouldn't mind if anything you said made sense but your obviously mentally challenged. How fucking stupid all of you people are, I´m not homophobic but I dont want to see that on tv? Thats like saying I´m not racist but I don't want to see a black person on TV? Its the same thing, just saying a thing doesn't make it true. Hey Perez, don't you find this just a little bit depressing or is it just me?

  93. 93

i think its because no one really liked her and the relationship probably wont be all that believable.

  94. 94

Wow, I have hope yet. If THIS UGLY BITCH can have a face for television, then hell, I CAN TOO, lmao!

  95. 95

They got rid of Brooke Smith cause the character she played just wasn't likeable - no one cared about her because her character was plain boring, gay or not.

  96. 96

Wow, now that Prop 8 passed are all the same-gender relationships on telly going to fade into the background or be eliminated all together (i.e., soap operas, Grey's Anatomy, Brothers & Sisters, the L Word, etc.)? :o

  97. o2bme says – reply to this

because she's ugly. House's Dr. Seven is a freaking hot lesbian and she's still on the show. oh wait, she's dieing though.

    Re: ChocJane
why do people compare blacks to homo's? Black people don't choose their skin color. homo's choose to be gay.

  99. 99

"BONES" on FOX just started a lesbian story line last night. Maybe they will have the balls to continue it.

  100. 100

Good riddance. She's GROSS and obnoxious.
