Author and ER creator Michael Crichton has unexpectedly passed away at the age of 66.

Best known for penning the Jurassic Park novel that would inspire a blockbuster film franchise, Crichton had endured a long, private battle with cancer.

His novels have sold successfully, and his work has earned him not only a Peabody and an Emmy, and even a dinosaur named after him.

Crichton's family told ET:

"While the world knew him as a great storyteller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us — and entertained us all while doing so — his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes.

"He did this with a wry sense of humor that those who were privileged to know him personally will never forget."

Crichton leaves behind a wife and a daughter.

Our thoughts go out to his family during this painful time.

Brilliant author, seemed like a good human being, too. I've read many of his books. Horrible loss for American writers.

    26. 26

SO sad. I liked Crichton . He was so intellegent , talented , and creative. I always liked seeing him in interviews. And I also like the pattern his life took. He went from being a doctor to an author. Seems like he was a good man. May God watch over his family.

    27. 27

      This guy was super prolific.

He wrote ER, Jurassic, Coma, Andromeda Strain - was a producer, a doctor, a Harvard grad, and a good looking guy to boot.

    28. 28

Other notable creations by Michael Crichton:
      The Andromeda Strain
      The Great Train Robbery
      Congo
      Sphere
Jurassic Park - The Lost World
      Disclosure
      ER
      Twister

He was a great visionary of the world and its future, most notably
in his novels 'Prey', 'Next', 'State of fear'.

    36. 36

Wow, that is a big story and yet there was very little coverage because King Barack was dominating the news.

      Love Critchon's books. RIP.
