What a nail biter!
The senate race in Minnesota between Norm Coleman and Al Franken is far from over.
As of Wednesday, Coleman, the incumbent Republican senator led the Deomocrat challenger and former SNL player, Franken, by ONLY 477 votes!
And, according to Minnesota law, recounts are required in races with a winning margin of less than one-half of 1 percent, although a losing candidate may request that it not go forward.
Franken announced his support for a recount and said that his campaign was investigating alleged voting irregularities at some polling places in Minneapolis, "Let me be clear: Our goal is to ensure that every vote is properly counted."
He also went on to say that "a recount could change the outcome significantly."
However, Coleman urged Franken to waive his right to a recount, saying that the prospect of changing the result was remote and that the $86,000 'cost' of a recount would be costly to taxpayers.
It's 477 votes. 477!
That's a miniscule margin, Coleman!
If Minnesota really needs money to cover the cost we're sure a ton of people would be willing to donate to the cause of democracy!

I LOVE AL(!) and I'm very proud of my state for mandating a recount. It isn't democracy if we're unwilling to ensure that we get a democratically elected candidate.
I didn't really dislike Norm before, but he's been pretty smug in response to this. I don't think Al would behave that way were the situation reversed. He should have more respect for his opponent and the large number of Minnesotans who support Al Franken. It reminds me of George W. Bush declaring his mandate after he squeaked by in 2004.

Perez!!!! You don't have the history of Norm Coleman and what he did for the city of St. Paul as Mayor. You may not agree with all he has done as Senator - but don't just vote down party lines. He is a great person, and a career politician - unlike Franken. Norm turned neighborhoods where I live from being unsafe to being able to walk alone at night to shops and restraunts. Please look into all he did for St. Paul before you automatically endorse the comedian who only bought a condo here so he could run for senate.

For a recount of this size and difference, there's never been more than 20 votes swing the other way. It's pointless after all the counting is done, if it's not less than 100.

It apparently costs 5 cents to recount each ballot, according to the Star Tribune in Minneapolis. Coleman is such a smug motherfucker, though. He advises Franken not to recount with a 477 vote difference. Is he fucking delusional??! After all the money spent on campaigning, OF COURSE he is going to exercise his right to a recount. Being from Minnesota, I hope to god that Franken does not end up representing our state! He is an idiot and knows nothing about what MN needs. Granted I'm not a huge fan of Coleman either but he has done alot for St. Paul and I would much rather have him in office then a racist Franken!!
I live in MN and voted Franken. However, whoever may be on top, the call is (way) too close not to do a recount. I know there were issues with voting places in Minneapolis and we're trying to figure them out. We may not know the results till later this month. Crossing my fingers for Franken!

i'm from minnesota and disgusted by the fact that coleman would even remotely suggest that we NOT go through with a recount…he probably spent taxpayers money obstructing citizens' abilities to make their votes count because that's the kind of man he is. i think that although this is a lengthy and costly process, we will see (I HOPE!!!) franken pull ahead in the end!

One of the reasons why this race is so close is because there was a third party candidate who got a substantial amount of votes (more that most third party candidates usually get that is)
Coleman is a career politician and is amazing that his personal life has not been publicly exposed. Us Minnesotans can not afford to have him representing us any longer!

It costs $.03 per ballot for the recount and there are close to three million ballots that have to be counted by hand. The difference is now less than 400 and if the shoe were on the other foot, Norm would definitely be demanding the recount. What a sleazeball.

I think it speaks to our interest in the process and not always kowtowing to the party line that a third party candidate did so well and even though I wasn't a fan that we elected Jesse. At the end of the day there really isn't any difference between politicians on either side of the fence be they Dems or Reps.

It costs that much to recount because they have to pay for people to count EACH individual ballot as well as pay for lots of lawyers to watch over the process and that's a lot of "per hour" spending to count EACH vote.

The margin is now 236 and the official recount hasn't even started. I hope this all comes back to bite Coleman in the ass for being so cocky as to declare an early victory.
