Spielberg and Will Smith Teaming Up
Variety reports that Steven Spielberg has been waiting years for the 'perfect' project to do with Will Smith, and he just might have found it!
The two are reportedly in early discussions to collaborate on an American remake of a Korean flick called Oldboy.
The story centers around a man who gets kidnapped and then held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. He's suddenly released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.
Will would play the kidnapped man with Spielberg directing.

Oldboy is the film that was supposed to have influenced the psycho that committed the Virginia Tech murders. Seems a bit wrong to be making a Hollywood blockbuster out of such a tragedy.

I dont think America is ready to see Oldboy. Its a very strong and controversial story line. Is a master piece, no doubt it, but they will change some of the master aspects (I dont think they will let Will's caracther fuck his daughter in the movie - he didnt know it was his daughter - and then cut his own tongue).
I saw the original one, was amazing, disturbing and I am sure that America is not ready to see the original script, they will change a lot of stuff otherwise it will be very critizized.
I dont know if Will Smith is dramatic enough to play this part.

OldBoy is an awesoem movie that doesn't need to be remade!!!!!!! This is not a movie for Will Smith. It obviously won't be rated R so it won't be as violent or as gory. Don't forget a Clockwork orange and Midnight Cowboy were American. But you are most likely right, there is no way that Will Smith and Steven Speilberg will do amovie where the guy cuts out his tongue and fucks his own daughter. Spielberg would rather cut out his own tongue than do that. It will likely resemble the origional about as closely as I am Legend resembled the book…i.e. not at all.

I really hope this falls through. I hate to say that, but they cannot remake this movie and have it even be up to par as the original. Plus, it is just WAYYYYYYY too racy for either men.

People should see the original Oldboy. It was probably one of the most disturbing and haunting movies I have seen. If Steven Spielberg makes it, he will need to stay true to the story. It is a brilliant study in situational insanity. Really a horror movie. It makes sense when Oldboy eats the live octopus as there are restaurants in Korea and Japan where live seafood (fish,octopus etc. - see You.Tube) are served. How would you get Will Smith to do something like that? How would it make sense? There is a reason that some movie plots work best in some parts of the world (think woods..log cabin…Maine). If Spielberg is making this movie, I think he should stay true to the cultural background of the movie and have either Jiang Wen or Xia Yu, two fantastic Chinese actors as the lead.

That's how a lot of people who had never seen the movie even heard about it in the first place. The Va Tech shootings didn't parallel the movie in any way but for whatever reason, he sent the pictures to NBC. I guess he liked violent movies.
