Whoever is heading this protest is assuming that ALL Catholics are saying yes to prop 8. You say you are not protesting their religion…well yes you are. You're protesting the Catholic faith because you believe that it is Catholics who are saying yes to prop 8. I am a Catholic and I say no to prop 8. I believe it isn't right to not be able to marry the one you love. I would feel horrible if people would have told me I couldn't marry my husband. So I think this protest is a little off as far as it "not" being a protest against the religion. If it is to be held in front of a Catholic church it should be held in front of a mormon church, a victory outreach church, Jehova witnesses, baptist…and so on. Well I say no to prop 8 and I'm a Catholic.

Um didnt you say it was the mormons yesterday? I can't begin to say how horrifyingly wrong it is to run protests on churches because they are not state institutions. Its intimidation as in if you don't believe what i believe i will come to your house of worship and make a spectacle.

  3. 3

I think it is ridiculous that same sex marriage still isn't possible in every state of the U.S.A.. I'm from the Netherlands where same sex marriage is legal since 2001. In my opinion marriage is about love between two human beings and it doesn't matter if it is love between a man and a woman, a man and a man, or a woman and a woman. I think it is a shame that in a country like the U.S.A., which is/was the land of opportunity not every citizen has the same rights.

  4. 4

Omg, are you kidding me?? Youre going to church to protest because as you say "It's hypocritical to praise love on Sunday and outlaw it on Tuesday". Last time I checked all religions were AGAINST the type of love youre referring to. Be educated about your protests, be gay, be happy but dont be stupid gays. Find out the most appropriate places that will have the biggest impact to protest are and then do that. But to go, where families take little Johnnie and little Suzy to worship Christ and learn the bible (ie homosexuality is NOT a SIN) thats sort of dumb.

  5. 5

Re: Almondjoy – oopsie *homosexuality IS A SIN* my bad….hehe

  6. 6

I think you are protesting the religion! you should go protest somewhere else not in front of a church, besides they have the right to not accept gay marriage because that is part of the religion. for people who claim to want equality you sure want to shove your believes at people who don't! hypocrites!

  7. 7

targeting a religion like what these people are doing is dangerous and despicable.

  8. 8

your protests are so juvenile. to protest a church, what are you trying to do? tell them that it not okay for them to have their views and opinions but its okay for you to have yours and dammit they need to have yours too?

Foolish. You gays need to think this out. Youre harassing churches and all who go. Why? Why? Because youre assuming it was the people in the churches that voted against you. What if it wasnt?

You guys are all being complete asses. If I took my children to a church the gays protested I tell you what I'd be so pissed that would sway my vote next time in the opposite direction you want. Have any of you thought this out??

  9. 9

I'm pro gay marriage, but now your just pissing me off Perez.

  10. 10

All this prop 8 shiz is starting to piss me off. It's everywhere, myspace, here, youtube, everywhere. You need to accept that the majority voted for it to be passed. A lot of things happen in life that hurts, discriminates, enrages you but you have to move on and realise that gays have come a long way to have their voices heard. It wasn't that big of a win. I'm sure in 4 years time you will have the right to marry. Protesting now is not going to help your cause because it makes you look like psycho idiots who cannot accept the fact you lost. The protests won't remain peaceful, it will get violent because some idiots will ruin it. Besides, protesting in front of a church is protesting their religion, because yes it is in their religion and beliefs that marriage is between a man and a woman. You are saying that they aren't allowed to practice how they want. You do get the rights to be gay, to have a civil union and you need to remember this and not forget. It is unfair that you cannot marry, but your victory will come, but it won't happen just yet. If you feel the need to protest, why don't you protest to the government offices who put the law to the vote, protest in washington to make marriage legal across America. Protesting infront of the church is offensive, as it's not only just these religious people who voted yes, ordinary atheists and non believers voted yes to, why don't you protest to them?

  11. 11

i wish i could be there, perez. i also wish your devoted readership were more supportive of your sexual orientation–what with their hate slurs and requests for more gossip, less politics. to steal a line from the women's rights movement, the personal is political. i hope to see the day when we look back on this fight for equality the same way we look back on the fight put up by women and african americans. until then, i send my love and support and continue to speak out as a heterosexual advocate of homosexual equality.

  12. 12

NOT cool, Perez. This is a Church and a RELIGION. all religions are different and created to serve their followers' beliefs. it is WRONG to impose your personal issues on a two-thousand year old institution such as the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church is bigger than you, and bigger than the United States. it's almost as ridiculous as having communists trying to change democracy because they do not agree with it! Us Catholics practice our religion in private and do not deserve to be stalked by large groups of individuals who do not acknowledge our faith which is sacred to us. it will NOT happen in ROME and it should NOT happen ANYWHERE.

  13. 13

I am pro rights for gay marriage BUT why is the protest at the cathedral?! It is the State that is making the LAWS, NOT THE cHURcH. FOcUS your energies toward the right way. Why start trouble in the wrong way? WRONG. I totally do NOT support that rally. IF it were at the steps of the court house, then YES, I would be there.

  14. 14

PROTESTING WILL DO NOTHING! are you serious?! people voted yes to it, the government cant just change it because of the protests. you cant just keep blaming mormons and catholics for it not being passed. GROW UP!

  15. 15

Mario, get a clue and realize you're pissing people off with your agenda. The more you protest, the more you turn people against you. The only thing you're accomplishing is initiating more hatred towards your cause.

  16. 16

Typical liberal idiots. Preach love and tolerance yet you're completely intolerant of religious beliefs. HYPOCRISY IS ALIVE AND WELL!

    18

NO! this is not right! why would you do this? Protesting infront of a catholic cathedral? Is not righ! Why are you going to assult the right of people to practice their religion? I'm sorry that your prop. did not pass, is not everyones fault. Go to the court house or government buildings. Back when the civil rights movement was going on, you never saw this type of assault vs. people and their right to practice their relegion in PEACE! Leave people alone! This will be one more reason why people will turn their backs against the gay community. I disagree 100% with the location of this protest!

  19. 19

A peaceful protest? Really? Like the one held outside the Latter-day Saint temple yesterday? Is it peaceful to graffiti a temple? While our temples may not be sacred or important to you, we as members of the LDS church hold them in very high regard. Protest the government, leave the religion out of it. Separate church and state.

  20. 20

I am a catholic republican and Im for same sex marriage. However since religion is seperate from government, I think that gay couples should be allowed to be married at a courthouse. When it comes to religious ceremonies I think that the congregation should be allowed to have any disctretions if they have any. I really do not believe that the catholic church is discriminating agaist gay couples, it is just really hard to change their beliefs that have been practiced for many centuries. I think that they should protest the government because they are the ones in charge

  21. 21

    Perez,

How dare you tell people to protest at the Cathedral! I am Catholic and never ONCE did the Priest mention ANYTHING about Proposition 8. I am appalled that you would turn the Catholic religion against anyone who would read your site. It would be necessary if you would APOLOGIZE to all of your Catholic and religious fans who read your website. You want peace? STOP protesting! California has made up their mind on Prop 8 and YOU nor ANYONE else is going to change that. Basically you said that all Catholics are against legalizing gay marriage in the state of California. Not true. For your information, I voted no on Prop 8. I have several gay friends and I would never do something to limit their love for each other but there is nothing I can do about it. I am very insulted that you would insult the Catholic religion like this.

    Your FORMER fan,
    Paige

  22. 22

Hey morons….first you argue that marriage has no religious meaning, but legal- blah blah blah–then why are you protesting in front of a church?????? Separation of church and state ring a bell????? You all can't accept the fact that the majority of people do not —DO NOT– agree with you all!!! Bunch or sorry ass sore LOSERS!!!

  23. 23

    Re: Catharine – Well said!!!!

  24. 24

i love how now that people are protesting outside of catholic buildings, everyone is saying how wrong it is.. but when you talk about doing it to the mormons, it seems to be acceptable.

    wtf?

mormons only make up 2% of california,
and you also have to take into account that NOT all of them supported Prop 8.

so since when does less than 2% = the 51% majority that allowed it to be passed??

  25. 25

    hell yea i'm going XD

the march starts @ hometown @ lincoln height's lincoln park

  26. 26

I am in agreement with most of your posters-stay away from the church! this is not love what you are doing, you are trying to intimidate people. I am not catholic, but, regardless, I am sure not all catholics voted yes. The CHURCH, as in the ones running it, are going by their interpretations of the scriptures. It is not illegal what they are preaching. Alot of people will not look at you guys protesting and say, hey, they are here in front of the church, they are right, I will change my views.' Many are going to feel intruded upon, the church officials might preach more about it, People are going to be angry about the issue now and they will feel even more against gay marriage. stay away from people's religious beliefs

  27. Arshe says – reply to this

    27

Ok funny and true, the gays thought that prop 8 would be best on the election because so many liberals would show up to vote but 70% of all black voters there for obama voted yes on prop 8 against gay marriage. Its not pc to suggest whose fault it is but the fact is over 50% of your so called religous whites voted against prop 8 in ca

  28. 28

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate gays, infact I have a gay friend,
    But this has passed. Done. Over. The people voted. They could just easily move out of there and move to a place where you CAN get married. And if they can't move for whatever reason, that's too bad for them. And why are gays so pushy about MARRIAGE? What's wrong with just simple dating, you don't need to prove your love by marriage. Also, I was expecting it to not pass, because all I hear on this site was;
    'NO ON PROP 8'
But it passed. Just stop, because I doubt they'll change this.

  29. 29

this is SO ridiculous. my priest has not mentioned one thing about prop 8 you are an idiot.

  30. 30

    GET OVER IT!

    IT'S OVER!!!!

I ACCEPTED OBAMA YOU ACCEPT YES…..BECAUSE THE PEOPLES VOICES WERE HEARD.

  31. 31

Agree with most of the posts - until the legislature moves into the LA Cathedral, of what use is this protest? And the invitation specifically uses the word protest - the only thing those upset about the outcome should be protesting is the outcome itself. Otherwise - hold a rally downtown to "rally" people toward the cause.
As a Catholic - I feel the biggest insult to marriage is leaving the institution up to the state. If we are all looking for a clear separation of church and state, why not leave the institution up to individual religions, and let the state recognize unions.? May be semantics, but I'd rather leave a sacrament to my pastor, not to my congressman.

  32. 32

    Re: justtfax
the reason why there is a protest outside the cathedral is because CARDINAL Roger Mahoney urged and then thanked Catholics for voting Yes on 8 (see below). Clearly in violation of separation of Church and State. The Church does not have ownership of the word Marriage. Non-believers and criminals can get "married". Gay people want to have the same rights outside the confines of the Church's rules.
    FROM CARDINAL MAHONEY…WWW.LA-ARCHDIOCESE.COM
I am grateful to the Catholic Community of Los Angeles for your commitment to the institution of marriage as fashioned by God and to work with such energy to enshrine this divine plan into our State’s Constitution.

The passage of Proposition 8 was the result of an unprecedented coalition of many Faith Communities and other citizens who understood the importance of maintaining the bedrock institution of marriage as has been lived out since recorded history.

  33. 33

What the hell is wrong with you people!!! Get a freakin' life already. As a straight woman, I'm not allowed to marry someone of the same sex either. See…we have the same rights

  34. 34

perez you shouldnt care so much because no one will ever want to marry you

  35. 35

You go around preaching equality and tolerance but then you yourselves can't tolerate people who don't have the same beliefs as you? A little hypocritical don't you think? Prop 8 passed. Whatever. It's over. Last Tuesday. It's Sunday. I agree with most of the posters here as well. Also, how is it that Obama wins by a land slide with 52% but you all get stripped of your rights wit 52%? You yourself said no amendment should be made with only 52% of the vote. Well, should a president be elected with only 52% of the vote? Go ahead and protest, but the Church really has nothing to do with it. If you want equality, act mature and practice what you preach, ie if you want others to accept your opinions and beliefs, you need to accept theirs as well/

  36. 36

Also, all churches are private institutions. Separation of church and state. As private institutions, whether anyone likes it or not, they are "allowed" to have beliefs that can be seen as discriminatory.

  37. 37

  38. 38

Re: nononoon8 – I am fully aware that the leaders of the church spoke out against gay marriages-And the cardinals, priests, bishops and the pope believe that is how the scriptures are interpretated.

  39. 39

lost part of my post-insulting them the heads of the church, making them look stupid, is not going to endure the parishioners to your cause. It will probably result in more people against it. the poster who suggested a rally downtown to educate makes alot of sense. education is the key, and the only way to do it is get the people outside and away from the religious institutions. get people to think for themselves, separate the church from the state.

  40. 40

Okay this is getting a little stupid. Perez I hope and pray you do not go and protest at a church because God will not like that at all and with the way the world is now we all should be turning our eyes on God, even if you dont believe in him wouldnt you rather to have something to believe in than nothing. Anyways though I just feel that to protest a church is totally wrong in every way. You cant blame it on catholics or mormons or anyone else because thats discrimination to. I wish we all could be equal but there was a vote and it was not passed nobody protested that obama won. If you wants to change it do it the right way dont try to pass a stupid petiton to tax churches you dont want judgement passed on you neither do all churches, and dont protest a church service because that is so WRONG in many ways I dont care if its peaceful protest or not!

  41. 41

YES on 8! We have spoken! GET OVER IT! 8 passed!
just stop it and get over it u fat shit

  42. 42

First it was the Mormons now it is the Catholics!!! Good way to get people on your side, bash religions and walk outside their places of worships because you emotional little cry babies aren't happy. Take it for what it is and deal with it. I wanted McCain for president, maybe I will find someone to blame, DAMN JEWS!!! Get a freaking life.

  43. 43

Im Catholic and although im neither American nor gay, if given half a chance i would vote in favour of same sex marriages..i believe it is everyones right to be with the one they chose to for eternity. though perez its not the catholics fault…get ur facts right >:(

  44. 44

How hard would you fight for your family?

That is all we are doing - fighting for our family.

  45. 45

IDIOTS, lol! How stupid is it to protest at the Church? Who's listening to you, certainly not the Church! Shows how incredibly dumb you are…lol!!

  46. 46

The right to amend California’s Constitution is not granted to the People, it is reserved by the People. The Supreme Court has repeatedly acknowledged the reserved power of the People to use the initiative process to amend the Constitution. For example, when the Rose Bird Court struck down the death penalty as a violation of fundamental state constitutional rights, the People disagreed, and in the exercise of their sovereign power reversed that interpretation of their Constitution through the initiative-amendment process. Even a liberal jurist who vehemently disagreed with the People’s decision on the death penalty, Justice Stanley Mosk, nevertheless acknowledged the People’s authority to decide the issue through the initiative-amendment process.

If majority always makes the laws, then let the world be governed by Islam, since it has the largest number of believers.

And if the laws should be based on the religion, then gays should be killed and women should always wear head scarf.

The US was cool when it was a place that is governed by CIVIL laws.

  48. 48

No Perez your not protesting their religion just whats in the BIble. Get over it! Not everyone believes marriage for gays should be legal. I would rather go by the Bibles than what People think its cool to believe in.
They have a right just as much as you do in their beliefs. But you seem to think everyone has to believe in what you do or they are wrong.

  49. 49

Why are you not protesting blacks and latinos who overwhelmingly pushed this vote over and who voted for Prop 8 way more than whites? Oh, I forget, because all gay people wanted to get out the black and latino vote to get Hobama Bin Laden elected–you all thought getting him elected would get you no prop 8. So, it's okay for blacks and latinos to get Hobama Bin Laden elected but not okay for them vote their heart on gay marriage. How hypocritical. I guess Americans who didn't want bin laden for president should be protesting as well. Whether we like or not over 50% is majority. Leave all religions alone. Religion didn't do this–people did. Obama believes marriage is between a man and woman. Why can't you people just take civil unions and be happy? I'm not against gay marriage, but I'm against any couple, gay or straight, being flambouantly open about it in public–no couple should slobber all over each in public–I don't want my young child to see it from gay or straights. I think the gay pride parades do nothing for your cause–you all just really look silly. I don't need to dress like a freak and walk the streets to prove my love for my husband. If you people would stop acting so silly and being so pushy, it might not offend people to the point that they turn out in droves to vote for a prop 8.

  50. 50

Why attack churches. I say no on 8 but I think everyone is intitled to feel how they feel. I think it's messed up.

  51. 51

What the protestors fail to realize is voters have the legal RIGHT to cast their votes any any way they choose. It's a fact and its in the CA constitution that props can even be brought to the public to vote on under citizens initiative.
If you don't like that FIX THE CA CONSTITUTION…but that's a double edged sword and takes away the publics voice for any opposition.
This is all about gays adopting after marriage anyway…thats the real issue
    some voters are concerned with.
Blaming religion is misguided as a whole because you don't know how people voted….So do you boycott your crush Brandon Flowers too and Paul Walker simply because they are Mormans but not knowing what they support or believe?
