Prop 9 isn't only anti-gay, it's anti polygamy! Dang!!
Marriage is a religious institution. Any 'ceremony' performed in absence of a pastor should simply be deemed a 'Civil Union'. In continuation of that concept, legally on paper, all 'Marriages' should be seen legally as 'Civil Unions' with the same rights and credence.
With the separation of church and state, it is unethical to differentiate between any Union. The only institution that would have that right is the church. That is to say, if a religion does not believe that homosexuality is acceptable, they're able to deny the ceremony and religious rites of marriage.
The government, as intended by our fore bearers, is supposed to reside outside the confines of religion. So, on paper to our government, Tom and Susie's legal union should appear no different than Tom and Frank's.
Considering that the majority of prop 8 supporters have an issue with the definition of marriage, as marriage is a religious institution and therefore has no business in the government at all, wouldn't it be smarter to simply declare the equality of all legal unions?
Just a thought.
I think that gays should be able to marry but, to hear a Government official ( Gavin Newsome) say "whether you like it or not " is down right horrifying. That is not a "Democracy" ( by the way Perez we don't live in a democracy) , THAT'S A DICTATORSHIP!!

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have less rights in California than Domestic partners. They are not married, so they don't have protection as spouses and they are two different genders so cannot register as Domestic Partners.

Being a born and raised Californian stuck in Ohio, I struggled with the fact that I couldn't vote against Prop 8. I believe it never should have gone to a vote in the first place. You can't legislate morality.

Prop 8 is something that really shouldn't have been up for voting… It's not that dramatic of a thing. It's the right to be married and have all the security and (hopefully) love behind it.
The fact that people voted on this by itself was ridiculous! I can see if it dealt with Tax increase, a change in the education system, or any other type of thing that actual deserves the masses to be heard up on since it deals with their money.
This has nothing to do with everyone, this deals with those who are gay and wish to be married.

Couldn't have said it better. As said before, 52% Obama is a landslide, but 52% Yes on Prop 8 is ridiculous and is too close to be passed? Okay, I guess we shouldn't have a President because you know, 52% is just too close. The great thing about democracy is that the people as a whole get to express their opinions. You can't only love democracy when it goes your way. Everyone has just as much right to their opinions as you do. Prop 8 passed with a majority las tuesday. If you really want the right to marry, you would accept the democracy worked, even though it wasn't exactly what you wanted. Leave it alone and stop protesting. Try again at the next election and maybe it will pass only if you act mature right now. Protests will only make people turn against the cause.

1. It isn't justice/democracy for a majority to vote on the civil rights of a minority.
2. Human rights should never be decided by the mob.
3. Civil rights are not a popularity contest.
4. A constitutional amendment should never be allowed to pass with only 52% that is in fact anti democratic.

I am not anti-gay rights. I am pro-democracy. The point I was trying to make was that it doesn't make sense for people to say democracy is unfair when it doesn't go their way and then praise it when it does go their way. Democracy is the great thing about this country. Whatever my view is on politics, that doesn't really matter in this instance. The USA is such a great country. I just find it pointless to protest…get the issue back on the ballots at the next election. Move forward instead of being upset of what the majority of CA residents decided.

But see, anyone could say that about any election that didn't go their way. There will always be a majority around 52% and a minority around 48% in a major election whether it be presidential or just for/against an amendment. If you truly believe what you said there, anyone could say every election was stupid and people were just lied to. That would lead to huge disorder and chaos. No president would be respected since it was "only half of the population," no law would be followed, etc.

First of all- NO, marriage is not a religious institution. Just because a lot of people tend to hold their ceremonies in churches, does not make it religious. Heterosexual couples can marry in a civic office downtown. That is not religious. Marriage, under the law, state and federal, is a civil contract. And really- that is all it is. That's fact.
