Hairspray Composer Shows Us How to Stand Against H8te

Filed under: Politik > Business Blitz

prop8.jpg

Hairspray composer Marc Shaiman was shocked to find out this weekend that a business associate was a supporter of Proposition H8te.

According to public records, the Artistic Director of the California Musical Theater, Scott Eckern, donated $1,000 to YES on H8te.

This shook Shaiman to the core as Eckern was granted one of Hairspray's few regional theater licenses.

How could someone who undoubtedly worked with people from the gay community on a daily basis actually support the hateful proposition?

Well, Shaiman explains to friends in an email we've obtained how he dealt with the revelation.

The course of action he took and promotes can be used in your own life.

Check it out!

Friends,
This weekend, due to it being public record, I learned that a Mr. Scott Eckerd, Artistic Director, California Musical Theatre (where "HAIRSPRAY" was performed last year, one of our first licensed regional theatre productions) donated $1000 towards YES on Prop. 8

Well, I did what I felt I needed to do, I called him right up. "Hi, it's Marc Shaiman, co-creator of HAIRSPRAY, would you please call me back?" He did. I asked him how a man who makes his life and living working with (and I assume befriending and loving) gay men and women could possibly think we were less entitled to the same basic rights he enjoys. He basically said "it's not a personal thing against people, it's my belief regarding the protection of marriage…etc. (I'm paraphrasing his words, but that is the gist of it).

I then told him the idea that money from his salary that was, in a small way, made from a production of HAIRSPRAY had now been put to use to pass this bigoted Proposition truly hurt and sickened me and that no future project of mine would ever play his theatre.

(Oy, let's hope I have some future projects!)

So, ladies and gentlemen of the-ay-tuh, what can we do? We can picket (our own shows!), deny rights, etc. And I am all for that.

But how can we CHANGE MINDS?

Oscar Hammerstein (what a guy!) wrote "You've Got To Be Taught". That's what gets me. People aren't born with the belief that gays are "sinners", they HAVE TO BE TAUGHT. All of religion is TAUGHT.

As the pie of reality hit me (and so many others) in the face last week about how many people still believe that one sentence from one lovely book "proves" we are an "abomination", (a book that also allows for the stoning of wives or people who wear two different threads of material and don't get that book started on shellfish…) I believe I must now greet every person I meet with "Hello, my name is Marc, God made me gay and I think that THAT and He are both fabulous."

Or maybe "Hi, God made me gay, so please doll, take it up with Him"

I have a gospel station programmed in my car radio, and when it came on yesterday morning, I found myself turning it off due to quotes I've read these last few days. For me personally, there is nothing more gut-wrenchingly sad to me than that moment. I joyfully bypass talk radio, I enjoyed muting the TV when Sarah Palin came on or changing the channel anytime Bush appears, but TURNING OFF GOSPEL MUSIC? It was then that I truly realized I have got to do something to start changing minds because people, I AM NOT GIVING UP GOSPEL MUSIC!!

I'm blabbering now, and to people I have great respect for, so, what am I trying to say here?

Please contact Mr. Scott Eckerd, Artistic Director, California Musical Theatre

http://www.californiamusicaltheatre.com/index.cfm?page=572414

and ask him why he thinks I (and maybe you) am less a person than he. I don't want to attempt to affect the livelihood of folks who work at this particular theatre (as if that was in my power) but we have GOT to stop sitting back and accepting this bigotry, particularly from people in our own field.

No more apathy! I believe we all thought there was NO WAY discrimination could actually be written into the constitution, but WE WERE WRONG. And what the hell (pardon the pun) happened to the separation of church and state??

Today I will read my morning paper, and take a plane to New York and do many other things that people who believe as Mr. Eckerd will profit from it and I can't YET figure out how to live an entire life without inadvertently supporting folks like that, but for the love of God (pardon the pun), can we all start putting our money where our mouths are??!

Word!!!!!!!

Regarding his comment: "Oscar Hammerstein (what a guy!) wrote "You've Got To Be Taught". That's what gets me. People aren't born with the belief that gays are "sinners", they HAVE TO BE TAUGHT. All of religion is TAUGHT." I believe this and —— The same goes for GAYS - YOU HAVE TO BE TAUGHT. You were taught this and chose to go with it. You were not born this way. Just like some of us were taught religion and follow it. Get over it. Yes on 8!!!!!!!!!!

  6. 6

    i completely agree with this.

how ridiculous could this man have been.. i'm an avid theatre lover and i'm just.. shocked. i've been performing for years and i can't imagine how someone in his position could feel that way?? it's just.. wrong.

  7. 7

wow, that's a really inspiring text!

  8. 8

    Amen!

  9. 9

LET'S FLASH BACK TO THE DAY AFTER THE ELECTION AND "PRETEND" THAT PROP 8 DID NOT PASS…..HOW WOULD THIS ARTICLE SOUND?

"ATTENTION ALL MORMONS, CATHOLICS, BLACKS, AND MEXICANS WHO HEAVILY SUPPORTED PROPOSITION 8. TOO BAD WE LOST OUR BATTLE, BUT WE ARE PISSED! I AM URGING ALL OF YOU TO GATHER TONIGHT AT 7PM AT YOUR LOCAL GAY CENTER, GAY BAR, GAY CLUB, OR ANYWHERE ELSE GAY WITH SIGNS, POSTERS, AND CANDLES TO PROTEST THAT PROP 8 DID NOT PASS. LETS STICK IT TO ALL THE GAYS WHO MADE PROP 8 NOT PASS. HOW DARE THEY GO AROUND AND TELL PEOPLE TO NOT VOTE FOR PROP 8. LETS MAKE SURE WE SURROUND ALL OF THEIR GAY HANGOUTS TONIGHT AND TELL THEM THAT GAYS SUCK AND SHOULD BURN IN HELL."

NOW, HOW DOES THAT SOUND? NOT PRETTY NICE, RIGHT? SO WHY DO PEOPLE THINK IT IS ACCEPTABLE TO PROTEST AT MORMON TEMPLES? IT IS THE DEFINITION IS BEING A HYPOCRITE. AND ALL THE POSTS THAT SAY THE LDS CHURCH DONATED MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR PROP 8, WHY DON'T YOU TRY AND FIND THAT FACTS……THE "MEMBERS" OF THE CHURCH, NOT THE CHURCH ITSELF, WERE URGED TO DONATE THEIR TIME AND MONEY TO THIS CAUSE. THE CHURCH ITSELF SPENT AROUND $2,000, YEP TWO-THOUSAND DOLLARS, TO FLY OUT CHURCH OFFICIALS TO MEET WITH MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH IN CALIFORNIA.
HOW ABOUT YOU MOVE ON AND FIND BETTER THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR TIME.

  10. 10

Look, I disagree with prop 8 as a gay man, but I don't believe in singling people out in public. A private discussion is fine, but to violate someone's privacy is against what gay people are about. Better to donate to anti-8 groups or even boycott Bonneville Broadcasting (owned by the Mormon Church);.

  11. 11

    I'm with him!!! :)

  12. 12

It's incomprehensible why Proposition H8te was voted in. I don't blame religion for it at all, I blame people who take religion to the extreme and imagine they have the authority to determine other people's lives. All those fanatics who think they have the Lord on their side, while they go and do all sorts of amoral things, yet preach others should be pure. I call that HYPOCRISY!

Is it any of our business who marries and who doesn't? No. Everybody should have the right to marry regardless of their gender. To take that away is denying a human political right to people, which is definitely a step backwards.

To find out that certain religious groups came together to vote Yes on prop H8ate, makes me think that they don't understand religion at all. It's about love and acceptance, not hate and taking people's rights away.

  13. 13

I find it ironic that people say they voted on this ridiculous proposition to "protect" marriage when the divorce rate among straight couples is so high. Where's the proposition against divorce by straight couples? If we're really going to "protect" marriage, then let's see that on the next ballot.

  14. 14

The man is entitled to his own opinions no matter what line of work he is in, and there is NOTHING you can do about it. This is America. You have the right to agree with gay marriage, he has the right not too. It shouldn't interfere with his job because of it. Calling him out in public and belittling him is not going to change the way the people of California voted. Deal with it!

  15. 15

Those who voted Yes on 8 and donated money are true Americans patriots..

  16. 16

YES ON 8…get over it Perez…you don't even have a boyfriend you ugly piece of shit…why do you even care?

  17. 17

why do people who are for prop 8 bad people?! why are people slammed when they are VOICING THEIR OWN OPINON. like those against prop 8 do themselves. THIS IS A DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY WHERE PEOPLE VOTE. just because you think one way doesnt make it right

get THE FUCK over it!!!!!!!!!!!!! IM SOOO OVER IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. 18

that is so wrong. it is not ok for people to discriminate against people because of their believes. that is just as bad as when people discriminate against gay people and say "No gays will ever be allowed in my theater"

  19. 19

So I guess people don't have a right to support what they believe in and if it's different from you they should be put on blast? I'm sure this man has nothing against gay people themselves but he has a belief and no one has a right to say he can't support it. That's part of being an American, being able to support what's of value to you no be forced to support something you're against. Those that are against Prop 8 need to to stop putting people on blast because they are different from them…if you want people to support you then start supporting the freedom of those who are against gay marriage not gay people.

  20. ebee says – reply to this

    20

not sure what to think about this one. education IS the only way to truly inspire change, but we can't attack the beliefs of others with that kind of hatred and disgust. not productive.

  21. 21

TALK ABOUT SOMETHING MORE INTERESTING PEREZ. GET THE FUCK OVER IT. SERIOUSLY. YOUR WEBSITE IS ABOUT CELEBRITY RUMORS RIGHT?? THIS IS YOUR TITLE ON YOUR WEBPAGE. NOT SHIT LIKE THIS. LEAVE POLITICS OUT OF IT. THIS GUY HAD HIS OWN OPINON AND VOICE JUST LIKE YOU DO. JUST SHUT UP AND ACCEPT IT! WHY DID YALL EVEN PUT IT ON THE BALLOT THEN?!

  22. Hmmmm says – reply to this

    22

OMG, it's official, this is THE dumbest thing I've ever read… GET OVER IT!!! Quit yer bitchin' and DO something about it or SHUT THE FUCK UP!!! Those of us that did not support Obamanation in the election gutted through the litany of posts about how wonderful he is and how shitty McCain/Palin were, we voted and your messiah won, now we have to "play" the hand we were dealt. We can't change the cards, just how we play them, so get on with it! All your bitching is not going to change the votes that have already been cast.
    Move on.

  23. 23

I'm curious how such hateful folks (pwn3d, etc.) are such avid readers yet also such avowed homophobes. I sense a bit of hypocrisy there.

And I'm sorry, but to the person who argues that being gay is taught-can you please show me where they are giving lessons? Cuz I ain't seen one yet. Heterosexuality is taught constantly–it's often shown to us by our biological parents, our extended families, and oh, 98% or so of the images we see in movies and television.

And as for the protection of marriage–honey, there's nothing that gay folks can do it bring it asunder that will outweigh what all of the heterosexuals have done to it. Gays didn't invent Las Vegas weddings, my friends. (Though the overall outrageousness of it is very gay-friendly!). Gays didn't invent having six, seven, eight marriages. Marriage is a legal contract that provides rights. If you don't want gays in your church, that's your business. But it's just hateful and unchristian to deny any of god's children legal rights.

  24. 24

PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE THEIR OWN BELIEFS AND OPINIONS.
    THIS IS FUCKING RIDICULOUS.
    YOU FUCKING GAYS.

  25. 25

    FUCK THAT HOME BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. 26

Re: SgirlRe: Sgirl – if all gays are "taught" to be gay and aren't born that way, how do you explain gay people who grew up in strictly Christian, conservative homes who were taught that homosexuality was a sin? they weren't "taught" that being gay was okay, and they still ended up being gay. ergo, you are completely full of shit.

also, you're telling people who had their civil rights stripped away to just "get over it"?! yes, the gay community "lost," but that doesn't mean they can't still fight for what they believe in. dred scott "lost" too when the supreme court declared that because he was black, he was somebody else's property and was less than human. but abolitionists and civil rights activists kept fighting until black people had equal rights.

I think what i'm trying to say is: you're retarded.

  32. 32

god you're such a hyprcrite! it's fine to share your point of view and share your beliefs, but the second someone goes against the way YOU think, we're wrong. it's ridiculous. news flash, the majority of people voted yes on 8. deal with it! they're not ready to accept gay people getting married. and yo uknow what? neither am i! I'm all for civil unions, domestive partnerships, etc. with ALL THE SAME rights as hetero married couples… but the word "marraige" is a religious term and that religion just so happens not to believe in gay MARRIAGE. Why shoudl they have to accept it? For the record, I blame this whole gay marriage war on the government for taking a religious term and attaching government benefits to it….had they not done that, it wouldn't be an issue…. but get over it.

  33. 33

hahaha…it can go both ways.why are you ,a homosexual, stirring up spiteful hate? its not about hating gay people, its about confining the word/instituition of the practice/word marriage…as handed down by GOD,…GOD of the bible that states”man shall not lie with man”….its HIS book,HIS rules…play by the rules or take yr ball and go home.end of discussion.

  34. 34

    Fire that hating bitch NOW!!

  35. 35

Guess what? He's probably Mormon. Noted in his bio on the theatre company website, "He served as the producer of the Sacramento Temple Youth Cultural Celebration, More Precious Than Gold, at Arco Arena and is the recipient of BYU’s College of Fine Arts and Communications Honored Alumni award. "
    +
The theatre company has also included AVENUE Q in their 2009 season. I bet the gay fellow who wrote Avenue Q is a little disturbed by Mr. Shaiman's discovery.
    +
It's a shame this hater gets to make money off the work of Mr. Shaiman and Mr. Whitty. I hope the gay and lesbian community in Sacramento will rally against the theatre company and this man.

  36. 36

I am a straight, married Christian mother of two. It makes me so sad that Prop H8te passed. Jesus loves us all, and I belive he'd be scolding us Christians for giving so much attention to an initiative that really doesn't affect us. He'd lecture us on the hate and devisiveness we encourage by supporting such a law. He'd ask us to instead witness to our gay bretheren on the love that HE has for all of humankind. He order us to re-direct the attention and energy that has been designated towards excluding a segment of the population towards caring and nurturing those less fortunate than us.

I think that all gay people should choose a day of protest and stay home. Don't go to work or school. All of us who support equal rights should stay home too. All of the bigots with closed minds will see just how important the gay community is to our entire community. This will also demonstrate how many people are really affected by such a callous law.

Remember seperation of Church and State protects us all. Who's to say which Christianity is correct? Or that in the future, the majority of the population won't be Buddhist? If we protect the United State's seperation of Church and State now, it'll ensure that our future generations will be able to worship in peace.

  37. 37

I work with gay people and I would vote yes in a second…gay marriage is wrong

  38. 38

I find it shockingly cruel to have singled this poor man out for such treatment. No matter for or against, EVERYONE is entitled to their own opinion, because we live in a republican democracy. I could have the opinion that all people with blond hair should be killed, and I'm entitled to it. I'm saddened by this close-mindedness, especially for such a standpoint based on open-mindedness. You want toleration? Then tolerate!

  39. 39

Great job Marc, for making a statement for what you believe in. Thanks for posting this Perez.

  40. 40

    LOVE PEREZ
    LOVE MARC SHAIMAN

  41. 41

    No on Prop 8

  42. 42

This is a "Tyranny of Tolerance." You have to tolerate me or I won't tolerate you. This is ridiculous! What If I boycotted everyone who voted NO. I'd be called a hater. RIDICULOUS! We live in a FREE country. How dare you encourage this kind of hate? SHAME ON YOU!

  43. 43

Re: KrissyKat – actually, you're wrong on a couple of points. "marriage" is not strictly a religious term. if it were, marriages performed by the state (in city hall, for example) instead of a place of worship wouldn't be called "marriages," even if they were heterosexual unions. clearly, "marriage" is also a legal term.

also, civil unions AREN'T equal to marriages–for example, couples in civil unions don't get a lot of the tax breaks that married couples get.

yes, you have a right to believe that gay marriage is "wrong" based on your religion. nobody is disputing your right to your opinion, and religions have the right to refuse to perform gay marriages within their church or to excommunicate gay members. but the rest of the country is not subject to the beliefs of YOUR religion. If the ceremony is not performed in your church, you can't use your religious beliefs to argue against it.

we say this all the time, but it never seems to sink in: SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. fundamentals of our government, people.

  44. 44

one day it will happen, but just not today. It proves that some people just dont have tolerance for homosexuals (i.e. those on here that have derogatory names about gays etc) kinda harsh people. But yeah i think to be pro-active on changing the outcome you really have to stop hating and placing blame on people and instead try and hope that closed minds of certain people who's opinions are considered bigotry.

  45. 45

Thank goodness this passed! The PEOPLE voiced their opinion. While I dont believe in discrimination, marriage has always been defined as between 1 man and 1 woman…It's insane that an activist liberal court decided to go against the will of the people and legislate from the bench. Those people protesting this are walking on thin ice because it will make people (who are otherwise nuetral) ANGRY with the gay community. Im sorry but GET OVER IT. The voters decided this.

  46. 46

stupid. god doesn't make people gay. you make yourselves gay. yes on 8!

  47. 47

quit acting like a bunch of bitches. you're men. you have dicks. they belong in vaginas. not other men's assholes or mouths. you have a disease, a mental illness, you're handicapped and might i add sexually retarded. what you need is to shut the fuck up and be happy that you haven't wiped out the entire human race with AIDS. go listen to Metallica and burn your madonna cd's

  48. 48

HMM didnt a couple of gay wackos in WeHo HANG a sarah palin effigy not too long ago!?!?!?!?
that kind of hate is OK! HATING Bush is OK! HATING churches and conservatives thats OK TOO! but dont u dare say a word about opposing gay marriage HATE MONGER!

  49. 49

by the way civil unions have every right married couples do! gay couples can STILL have a blessing by a pastor in a church, thats not being taken away by prop 8!

  50. 50

  51. 51

    Re: lili808
God Bless You! You have so eloquently stated what I, in my frustration with bigots, have not been able to do!
You are truly speading Jesus' message of love and inclusion and I appreciate you for showing how gentle, peaceful, and inspiring people that live with the TRUE light of Jesus are!

  52. 52

sorry we live in america where people are intitled to their own opinons! this site is turning into a gay rights blog…. the public has spoken, if we over turn this we should over turn fucking obama being president

  53. 53

Re: Sgirl – Do you HONESTLY think any person would choose a life of discrimination and hatred versus one of pseudo-normalcy? Are you THAT thick headed?! Every one of my gay friends has told me that although they love their lives they wish that there wasn't such a large amount of animosity toward their sexuality and wish so badly they could be straight so they would be accepted in society. So really, try and tell me that being gay is a lifestyle choice with a pure conscience.

  54. 54

Re: gonzo617 – Uh, I don't know if you know this, but Perez is gay as a springtime rainbow. So if you're really disgusted that this is turning into a "gay activist" blog I don't know how you can really be confused or upset that this is happening. Idiot.

  55. 55

I e-mailed them and told them I would not support or spend money on this company. Maybe we could have a nationwide boycott of businesses who donated money to H8TE?

Just because you are taught to be a christian doesn't mean you will CHOOSE to be one - it is called free will. And lay off the black analogy - it is not even close to being the same. Are you seriously trying to say that Gays are the same as blacks? Get over yourself. Also, no, I am not "retarded" but I take offense to that term in the way you are using it. Do you have something against mentally challenged people? You should stop spreading H8te towards the mentally challenged. They were born that way, unlike Homos, they can't help it.
    YES ON 8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  67. 67

Re: Sgirl – Are you retarded? Dropped on your head at birth? If you knew ANYTHING, you would know that being gay is not a fucking choice you moron! WHO would choose to be gay with people like you in the world? no one! I have so many gay friends and while most are proud, some of them live isolated lives and don't leave their houses because of fear of judgement from FUCKWITS like YOU! All religion is a load of shit and contradictions, as is the bible… Thou shall not judge another man… We hate gays… does that make sense in your ill educated narrow little mind? HELLO wake the fuck up! Just as much as the thought of being gay revolts you and you could never do it, is exactly how gay people feel about having straight sex/relationships… It's not a choice…You better wisen the fuck up, do you know that i have 2 friends that have commited suicide because their families were anti gay and crammed down their throats that being gay was a sin etc etc, they had to hide their whole lives and then KILL themselves because they couldnt live a lie anymore and couldnt stand to 'shame' their parents. Would you rather have your child alive and gay or dead? Actually don't answer that, I can pretty much imagine what your answer will be. fuck head

Re: leave____alone!!! – Yes, I was. Had I been raised by homos or lezbos I probably would have been taught to be gay. Yes, you are entitled to your own belief just as I am. But homos are not entitled to be married which is why Prop 8 passed. I am not forcing mine on you either. I'm sorry if the truth fucks your life up. By the way, it is RIDICULOUS - there's no "E."

  69. 69

Re: Sgirl – You obviously have no idea at all.. Do you think anyone would choose this lifestyle with narrow minded biggots like you in the world? uh, no honey they wouldnt. I have friends that have commited suicide because their parents crammed down their throats that being gay was wrong and a sin, and in the end it was too hard to keep living a lie but they couldnt disappoint their parents and tell them they were gay, so they simply ended their lives… Their parents now are shattered, cant forgive themselves, and would give anything to have them back now whether they be gay traight bi whatever, in the end it just doesnt matter… The only thing I care to take out of the bible is 'thou sshall not pass judgemtn on another man' the rest is man written hypocritical BS and shame on you all for playing into it

  70. 70

Re: Sgirl – Taught to be gay??? Holy shit, there's no point speaking to you lol… What a moron

  71. 71

Barraging Scott Eckerd with hateful or accusatory e-mails is not going to "change his mind," nor will it change the minds of anyone else who is singled out this way. Shaiman does not say to be hateful in attempting to contact Eckerd, but there is no doubt people will. Singling Eckerd out when millions voted for this proposition and many people donated money in support of this proposition is pathetic. This letter is pathetic. Shaiman chooses to twist the Bible's words to suit his agenda. Protesting or boycotting will not make people who are against homosexuality accept you. Maybe by boycotting you can intimidate people into letting you have your way or apologizing, but it doesn't mean they will all of a sudden change their deeply held beliefs and truly in their hearts accept you.

  72. 72

How do we get a hold of Shaiman? Email addy? Telephone Number? I'd like to call him and tell him how I feel as a supporter of PRop 8. He is WRONG TO SINGLE SOMEONE OUT like that for what was a personal choice and make a mockery of him; Shaiman's the one who looks like a loser! It's a free country still, even if Obama-man is taking office! I WANT SHAIMAN'S NUMBER!

  73. 73

How about Shaiman's BOYFRIEND, Scott Whitman? Any have a number for SCOTT WHITMAN?

Re: TahliaRe: Tahlia – Why do you assume everyone who is against gay marriage "hates" gays? That is such a nonsensical thing to say. I am against Gay Marriage. It has no place. If you want to be gay, that is your choice. And, just like everyone else, you live with the consequences of your choices. I feel for your friends who would commit suicide over being gay. Lots of people commit suicide over lots of different reasons. One of them being mental illness. So what is it that you have against mentally challenged people? Do you really hate them that much? You throw the word "retard" around like it means nothing. I guess you are the hater here. Mentally challenged people do not have a choice. They are usually born that way. Sometimes they suffer an injury that makes them that way. You should have more compassion towards others if that's what you are preaching. By the way, you can't just pick and choose what you want to believe out of the bible or religion. Its all or nothing. Stop h8ting on a people with mental retardation!! YES ON 8!!!!!!!!!!

    Re: lili808
These poor misguided religulous folks make me sad-they are using something that I get so much joy and satisfaction from in my own life to spread hate and fear. I get so angry that they don't realize that to non-believers, they are proof solid of WHY to stear clear of religion.
All of those people that voted (or would have voted if allowed) yes to H8 should take a look at some of these comments-they are so nasty and yet EXACTLY what that proposition is about-they should be SO proud to pass that outlook onto their families and children…pathetic…
    Have a great night!

perez, this is your blog, sure, but you've got customers - i wasn't aware, that this is your official threapy meeting. know what? you can't marriage (for now) that kind of sucks, but you have obama as a president - what's weighting more? get over it and entertain people, cause thats your fucking job! don't spit on everything what made you "big".

The great thing is that gays do have a lot of power and can use it to change minds.

    NO MORE MR NICE GAY!

This proposition TOOK AWAY something that was already granted by the state of California (gay marriage). Never in the history of California has a constitutional amendment been used to spill out HATE.

NO ONE has been able to say how gay marriage affects straights. NO ONE. And by the way, one of the lowest divorce state: Massachusetts where there is gay marriage!

And to all those BIGOTS and IDIOTS who continue to come here with their stupidity: Prop8 will be overturned whether you like it or not.

    Re: Sgirl
I just assume YOU hate gays, as evidenced by your comments and the comparison to murderers, rapists, etc.
Jesus=LOVE, and you waste your time being the opposite of that!

  84. 84

Why do gays Feel it Is okay to knock Christian? You All Sound like a Bunch of Little Girls on the Playground.

ALL Christians do not ALL think LIke RObots on every Issue. I am A Born Again Conservative Christian ANd and FOr the life of me I do NOt understand your Desire to take it up this ASS, But Honestly …I do Not care Who you Marry.

I Believe Gay Men and Woman are Grown ass adults ANd Should Not be told by the Government WHo they can OR cant Marry.

BUt Gays know the truth,,, That organizations Like NAMBLA ( North american man boyl ove association.com ) have thier kindergarten curriculum tied up in this, (and don't lie , you know they do). So If adult Gay men and woman would stand UP to the Perv among them, I don't think You would find many Christians really giving a shit who they marry.

  85. 85

    Dear Perez,

Its not entirely over yet. The passing of the Prop 8 can be challenged as unconstitutional in itself. Because that is exactly what it is. Whatever laws on the books grant a proposition such as Prop 8 to undo the legalization of gay marriage should be overturned. Gays rights to marriage was decided by CA Supreme Court. They weighed the merits from the constitutionality of gays rights to marriage and they found that to deny gays the rights to marriage is fundamentally unconstitutional!!!!!

Now comes along Prop 8 that had insane amounts of 1) money behind it 2) corruption behind it 3) ignorant people who have no understanding of what constitutional rights even are

Therefore - the passing of Prop 8 can and will be challenged yet again only this time it will be passed for good. Gays will get to be married and it will all turn out okay. It will take lots of smart lawyers. But there are many and they will know what to do.

What is really lacking in our society is basic understanding of laws and constitutional protections. The USA needs to get with the program and teach kids in school how laws work in society.

    okay end of my speech:)
"the wheels of justice grind slowly"

    my Dad always siad that

Re: FunMe – Yes, they do and they are using it to change the minds of anyone who actually voted no on prop 8! March, march, march, prance, prance, prance, skip, skip, skip! You are correct, it did take away something that was WRONGLY granted. You're also right that never has an amendment brought out so much H8te - by gays. Gay marriage does not have to affect "straights" as you put it to make it WRONG. It just is. By the way, we prefer to be called "normal." As far as IDIOTS and BIGOTS - you are both by definition. Look it up! YES ON 8!!! YIPEE!!!! WE WON!!! Good always prevails!

  87. 87

Re: lili808 – Thank you for posting what is quite possibly the only sensical post on this page from a religious standpoint. I myself am not an overly religious person but do have beliefs that stem from Christianity and Catholocism as that is how I was raised. I am also gay. People choose to hate, they don't choose to be gay. I wish there were more people out there like yourself.

  88. 88

    Correction
    Sorry Im a tad dyslexic

when I said "next time it will pass for good"
I mean that Gays rights to get married will become the law again
and that it will remain so "for good"

meanwhile the writers and pushers of Prop 8 will roast in a slow burning hell
    or something like that ;-)

  89. 89

Oh Puhlease, Perez! This DOES NOT mean that Scott Eckern hates gays, nor does it mean that all Americans or Californians hate gays. It simply means that the majority of people want to protect the SANCTITY of marriage. "Marriage" between a MAN and a WOMAN… two people who can procreate. It's not discrimination, it's the word. It's in a book called the Bible. Read up! :)

  90. 90

Re: Sgirl – Gay people don't teach their children/families/friend to be gay, you idiot fuckwit.

  91. 91

This is for Scott Eckern, who believes he has the right to dictate who is worthy of existing and loving and marrying and who isn't. What makes you think you have the moral, ethic right to say to someone: the state cannot "recognize" your capability and NEED too love and to be loved back? It smells like fascism to me: the ones full of sanctity (Aryans) versus the "dirty jews". Shame on you. How will you feel if one of your children turns out to be gay? How will you explain to him/her that daddy doesn't think they deserve to be alive. Loving and being recognized as a loving creature is what makes existence bearable, possible.

In fact, come to think of it, you must have gay feelings that you are ashamed of yourself. Otherwise you wouldn't care enough to spew hatred on your ballot, queen.

  92. 92

People can still be tolerant and respective of gays and still agree with Prop 8. A lot of it has to do with religious views. Why don't you bitch at Obama for not agreeing that gays should be able to get married? He doesn't support gay marriage and yet I don't see any complaints about him.

I am not saying I agree with Prop 8, but Jesus, give it a rest already.

  95. 95

I'm back everyone with my bold and italics and long bitching about nothing, sooo sorry…. ;) Actually this one may not be a huge "novel" like almost everyone else's here is. ; For some reason that makes me a horrible person though haha. Most of the people on here if you are against this, do you you actually read your comments after you type them? None of you hear how horrible and judgmental and fucking ignorant you sound?! 0.o I just have no idea how you people can be so fucking bad to people, thinking they have a choice in the matter, when there are people like you assholes out there who are judging them the way they are, upset that they are bitching and complaining.

  96. 96

When you wake up in the morning, you have a choice to choose what color shirt you want to wear, you have a choice to choose who you associate with, what radio station you listen to, what president you'd like to elect, what religion you want to follow, what right you want to protest, how many children you want to have, but as an American Citizen legally you are separated from from the "straight" people and you can't choose who you want to marry, you are different from everyone else because there is a book in this world, have the people in this nation don't read, half us this nation believe complete opposite in, half of this nation has the choice whether or not they wish to preach their religion on their children.

  97. 97

We don't even say the Pledge in school's anymore because people think this "god" shit is offensive. Why do they have to be treated any differently than you? You can choose to love a person of any color, any religion, any background, any social status, any prior convictions, any hair color, any ANYTHING BUT gender. You are all fucking ridiculous, and to try and justify this as ANYTHING BUT discrimination is absolutely bullshit, I hope you realize this. If anything you are turning away the "future" generations, who can see past the hate enough to realize this isn't fair, like me, who has only been with men her entire life, away from "your" god, and to a "greater power" who does realize that everyone in this world deserves the right to be who they want to, especially in the fucking land that that whole thing is all about.. guess this did turn into a novel, so fucking apologeticcc. Good night bitches ;)

  98. 98

The controversy in this prop8 was not marriage but marraige as a stepping stone to adopt children. They really don't care about the marriage issue its
that they are concerned about children.

I'm not making a comment for or against Prop 8, but I think this is wrong. Whether you think voting "yes" on Prop 8 is wrong or right, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. We are a melting pot of people in America composed of different races, orientations, and views. For Marc Shaiman to tell people to contact Scott Eckerd will do nothing, but send angry voters who are against prop 8 to harass him. Scott Eckerd is not saying he hates gays. He simply has a different belief, and he has the right to have a different view. Even if you think Prop 8 is hateful, by speaking down to all those who support it you're distributing the hate you speak so much of. Shaiman should be able to respect Eckerd's view in the same way that Eckerd should respect Shaiman's. Eckerd earned his salary and should be able to give it towards whatever cause he believes in.
