Church told 'obvious lies,' gay activists allege
On the first Sunday after a gay marriage ban passed in California, activists rallied in defiance, including hundreds of protesters outside an Orange County megachurch whose pastor brought Barack Obama and John McCain together last summer for a "faith forum."
About 300 gay-rights advocates fanned out along sidewalks leading to Saddleback Church in Lake Forest to voice their anger of the church's support of Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment approved by voters Tuesday that overturns a state Supreme Court decision in May legalizing same-sex unions.
Ed Todeschini, a Human Rights Campaign volunteer, accused Saddleback in particular of helping propagate what he called misinformation about the Supreme Court ruling, including that gay marriage would have to be taught to kindergartners.
A message seeking comment left at the church's main office, which was closed Sunday, was not immediately returned.
"They told such obvious lies. They used their lies to deceive the public," Todeschini said of the church, which gained national attention in August when its pastor, Rick Warren, brought Obama and McCain together to discuss their religious faith. The two candidates embraced during an often-contentious presidential campaign.
Todeschini said Sunday's rally was peaceful, with demonstrators waving placards with slogans including "Equality for all" and "Shame on you."
The amendment was passed last week with 52 percent of the vote, and backlash at churches over their support swept across California on Sunday after days of protests.
In Oakland, a large protest at the city's Mormon temple led the California Highway Patrol to close two highway ramps to ensure pedestrian safety. Protest organizers said they hoped to tone down the anger that has characterized some previous demonstrations.
"Our intent is not to disturb churchgoers," organizer Tim DeBenedictis said in a statement. "Our goal is to mend fences and build bridges so that all Californians can achieve marriage equality under the law."
The pastor of the 4,000-member All Saints Church in Pasadena spoke out against Proposition 8, calling the religious community's support of it "embarrassing."
The church announced that while it could no longer legally marry same-sex couples, it would continue blessing gay civil unions.
"It's very unfortunate and embarrassing that the (Christian religion) is in large part responsible for this act of bigotry," the Rev. Ed Bacon said after his sermon.
In Sacramento, a protest at the state Capitol was boisterous but peaceful as speakers led the crowd in noisy chants. Protesters waved rainbow flags, a symbol of the gay rights movement, and "No on 8" signs as police watched from the side.
Speaking on CNN's "Late Edition" Sunday, Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger expressed disappointment at Proposition 8's passage.
"It is unfortunate," Schwarzenegger said. "But it is not the end because I think this will go back into the courts. … It's the same as in the 1948 case when blacks and whites were not allowed to marry. This falls into the same category."

I'm not sure how to feel about this. I completely support gay marriage, but I'm not really in charge of what goes… we all are and we determine things by a fair vote. Both sides really threw down in this and the ban, unfortunately, came out on top. It's going to court and, even if it fails to get the results the gay community really wants, I'm assured that this is not a dead issue. We wrote prohibition into the constitution and we all realized how stupid that was. At first, when gays started protesting, I thought, "hey, you lost. Take it with some dignity." However, the repeal of prohibiton came from acts of defiance. America said, "no way! This is rediculous!" Good luck to you. Remain non-violent, above all!!
I think it's disgusting that in this day age people are still so close-minded. Can't Mornons marry more than one person? So, why can't a gay person just marry one?! Everyone should be treated equally. You don't choose who you love.

the first mistake with pro 8 is calling it "marriage"> the word used should have been civil union. Marriage is a religious institution which the government has no control over. Civil Union would have made it clear that the law would give gays the same equal and LEGAL right to have a union that is respected by the law.

It's funny how people say that the homosexual community and it's supporters are sore losers when God knows that if it was THEIR rights that were being taken away, there would be a fit. But if it's a straight person "bitching", oh that's just fine. How about we make things truly equal and have every "marriage", straight or gay, a civil union. I mean it's the same right? What the gay community is trying to do is move beyond the dirty homo-shower scene kind of gay in the 80's. They want to be able to bring their spouse home to their parents and participate in society. They want to be monogomous. They want to have a respected union. Divorce rates are astonishingly low in the already-married gay community. Right now, it's too easy to leave your lover for some other guy you meet… at the "bath house" as you say. Some stability, common financial planning and such… these things ground people. How could that be bad?

The Mormon Church (LDS) should have its tax-exempt status revoked IMMEDIATELY!
They have every right to speak out against an issue, but they can't be a political group AND maintain their tax-exemption. Have your cake or eat it, Mormons. Pick!
If the proposition passed because church leaders preyed on the ignorance and fear of their congregations (as many churches in the black and Latino communities I'm sure are guilty of doing as well), then they absolutely need to be held accountable. It's great that everyone wants to "rock the vote," but remember, not everyone who is voting knows what the hell they are voting for! Do you really want them showing up and casting dumb votes?
It seems that a lot of people on here are confused and saying the Mormon church is in Utah and had nothing to do with the passing of Prop 8. First of all, the Morman Church is everywhere, and secondly, the LDS was one of the biggest financial backers of the Yes on Prop 8 campaign. So, Yes, the LDS had a powerful hand in this decision in California.
Also, it isn't right to lie to the people in order to get them to vote a certain way. A large percentage of the people who voted 'Yes' did so because they were lied to in ads, and in commercials, and by their church leaders. That's why this is such a huge issue.

I have to agree with Kitten Poo on this. By continuing a high profile pursuit of “marriage” as opposed to a low profile pursuit of rights everyone else enjoys (and that we weren’t getting through state-by-state gay marriage recognition anyway) we handed the anti- side an easy victory. What people need to know are the real life consequences of bans like this at the federal and state level – of families that are torn apart because spouses can’t get immigration rights, that children seeking adoption are denied potential parents, and that anti-gay violence is still not considered a hate crime at the federal level.

I'm so tired of all this; California has voted (again), the results have been tallied (again) and the result is the same (again).
I voted Yes on 8, but now that I'm looking back I'm thinking if it had not passed this might be beneficial to other 'minority groups'. The GLBT community claims that you 'cannot' choose to be gay, you are born that way. Well, I was born to love to smoke pot; it is not a 'choice', my doctor has prescribed it to me and I cannot live without it. I know that there are other people out with my same condition, so I'm going to say we are a 'minority group'. If this gets overturned, then I will also have to fight for my 'right' to smoke wherever I'd like. I hope everyone reading this understands and will support our 'minority group' in getting this accomplished.
(Also, what about the 'minorities' that want to right to marry more than 1 person….how come no one backs them up?)
everyone deserves the right to get married regardless of race, gender, sexuality, etc. If someone told me that I was not allowed to marry my hubby, I would move to somewhere that I was…come to canada, we legalized same sex "civil unions" back in 2003, promoting equality and affording gay member of our community the same right and freedoms as any other…plus our economy is in much better shape
I don't know about the rest of you but for me the thought of my 7 year old daughter turning on the tv. and watching two males in female clothing or females in male clothing french kissing on there wedding day turns my stomach. SECOND of all…I like the fact that this is all about religion and marriage…and I agree marriage is a RELIGIOUS institution and the word MARRIAGE should be taken out of those FEDERAL laws that SEPARATE CHURCH AND STATE. Churches should decide WHO can MARRY who and the FEDERAL/STATE government should do what it is supposed to and have equal rights for all people. So Marriage should be changed in the Federal/State laws to be "Committment" or something that shows two people entering a LEGAL agreement to live life together, raise family together, and obtain and share assets together. It's not about wanting to STEAL marriage away from men and women. It's about wanting the same LEGAL RIGHTS as, under the law made by the FEDERAL GOVT, that married couples get to protect their families and assets upon death etc etc.

If 501c3's (that's a nonprofit in case you didn't know), are taking government money, it is ILLEGAL for them to take a stance on swaying government issues. The gays are essentially funding their rights to be taken away. And the government should be revoking the church's nonprofit status. It is NOT a special interest group, idiot. The churches cannot legally talk about government issues. Yes, I think so too. It's just discrimination, really. It does not affect heterosexuals one way or another if homosexuals can marry. Their only real protest seems to be that God would be against homosexuality but no one can say that for sure and, above all else, religions teach tolerance for the differences of others so I don't know why then the religious people would be the one most vocally against gays having equal rights. It's little different than denying someone a right due to their different skin color or because they're a woman and not a man. I'm surprised this had gone on as long as it has. If the government can admit it was wrong to deny rights to women or to blacks or other minorities then when they can see there is no difference here either?

That's the reason so many people have negative views of gay people, it's because of uneducated ignorance that continues from generation to generation. I'm sure you will teach your daughter the same narrow-minded view of life that you had. I'm a proud gay father and have raised my son (by myself). He is now a grown 23 year old, is a hetrosexual and has made me a proud grandpa. And yes his son will no he has two grandpas that both love him and will teach him the true meaning of life…. Life is too short to judge others. Let people be who they are.

Re: kitten poo – The state has given the right to gay couples to have civil unions already, ignorant fool. But a civil union is not the same as a licensed marriage. Even if you are not of a Christian Denomination but a straight couple, you have the right to have a licensed marriage. Non-Christian straight couples can marry. Gay couples, Christian or not cannot marry under the law. If marriage was strictly a Christian/Religious ceremony then we would have a WHOLE lot less marriages, weddings and ceremonies. The fact is, our nation is not solely a Christian nation-we are a melting pot of ethnic and religious differences, which many of us educated citizens learn by the time you pass the 5th grade. Under the law, a civil union is not the same as a legalized marriage and that is why there is such an uproar. I recommend reading up on your American Civil Rights history, this case is the same as the Separate But Equal fights that Blacks had to endure and fight for in order to even drink out of the same water fountain as whites.
If the Church AND the Governor are starting to show disrespect, sadness and frustration over the passing of Proposition 8, then something must be done.

I love when people refer to the prop 8 protestors as whiny. It is so ridiculous. The Gay community didn't lose a game of Monopoly. They lost CIVIL RIGHTS. I would also like to bring to the attention of all the bigots who are posting anti-Gay propaganda and hate all over this page, that you are posting on a site, made by a fabulous Gay, where mostly Gays and Gay supporters come. If you want to be heard and validated in all of your ridiculous insinuations and hateful beliefs, then you should write to the LDS. Because, while there are many anti-Gay comments on this page, you should know you are in the minority. The Gay community will win this fight, and when we do, (and I say we, because gay or straight, as an American this is my fight too) I will smile in the knowledge that the time where hateful bigots like yourselves can no longer put laws in place that deprive people of their basic human rights.
