The can refuse to officiate a ceremony, but they legally have no say on who can or cannot marry. Re: swandive – first off divorce is prohibited by ALL churches, marriage in the eyes of God is a spiritually binding experience that's never supposed to be broken and the Bible vehemently discredits any broken marriages. Back in the day the Catholic church would only offer annulments under extraordinary circumstances, hence why king Henry the VIII broke away from the vatican so he could get divorced. Now, however, divorces are a federal thing. Meaning that marriage is a legally binding contract that can be broken. A marriage under the church, which isn't legally binding unless you get a marriage license, prohibits divorce, as well as gay marriage. A legal marriage done by the state has nothing to do with a wedding held in a church, and therefore should be a right given to everyone despite sexual orientation. In other words marriages and divorces for all, not for some, and if people want to exclude certain individuals from this basic right based on a moral standpoint, then maybe they should take a look in the mirror to see what big hypocrites they're being by allowing people to get divorces, which are a sin in the eyes of God.

Almost as crazy as American people at some of the rally's that made comments about Obama "hating" white people. That's basically saying that the man hates is mother, hated his grandmother and because of simple genetics also hates his 2 beautiful daughters. Those who wanted to pass Prop 8 were determined to make it seem like allowing gays to marrying would end the sactity of marriage. Well if marriage is so sacred, then maybe the state (the ones that actually make marriage legal, not a church which is defined in our constitution as the separation between church and state), should make it illegal to divorce. In other words they're making a point not trying to abolish divorces as californians have abolished gay marriage.

The purpose of this video was not to really say prohibit divorce, it was to turn around the argument of those against gay marriage and say, if you're going to ban gay marriage, why not also prohibit divorce to "protect marriage". It was pointing out the hypocrisy…they don't actually believe you should prohibit divorce.

How could people not see this as anything but a joke? Plus some people need to start seeing the difference between religious marraige and a civil partnership. There are plenty of issues which are forbidden by many churches and religions which are common place in society. If your religion forbids you to do it, then DON'T YOU DO IT!Don't force an entire section of society to live by your churches laws.
Also I think the only pre-requisite to protecting children is that you will love and support them and keep them safe. And your sexual orientation makes no difference to yr ability to do this.

Just to add to the other insane proposal by many churches to deny the right to marry same sex couples….they don't have that right!!! The can refuse to officiate a ceremony, but they legally have no say on who can or cannot marry. In N.America the most basic principal is that "All are equal in the eyes of the law", so I can't imagine Cali, or any other state for that matter can continue to deny this principal to any individual. It will go to the supreme court soon enough I imagine.
