South African music legend, Miriam Makeba, passed away on Monday.
She was 76 years old.
Ms. Makeba was described as 'a voice who stirred hopes of freedom among millions in her own country, though her music was formally banned by the apartheid authorities she struggled against'.
The songstress died in Italy.
She was singing at a concert in support of Roberto Saviano (an author who has received death threats since writing about Italy's organized crime) and collapsed as she was leaving the stage, the South African authorities said.
Our thoughts go out to her family, friends and the many fans she inspired around the world.

Re: LettyB – Talk to you next week !!
sorry to hear that
It's sad that so many of your readers don't know who Miriam Makeba was. I can only assume that most of them are too young and probably ignorant about history - especially South African history.
May this wonderful woman rest in peace. She will be sadly missed.
You are such a fraud Perez, your thoughts are not with her family. You're just using her death as filler. Creep
who?
I once saw her perform. She was very active in the movement to end apartheid in South Africa and get Nelson Mandela freed.
That's so sad……..
A real pioneer in the world music scene and for her country, she was and is transcendent. Love how she kicked it while performing. RIP, Miriam…
She will be missed. She was a family friend. For those of you who don't know, she was a singer in South Africa during apartheid times. She represented triumph amongst people that were segregated and endured hardship because they were black.
According to CNN "The first African woman to win a Grammy award, Makeba started singing in Sophiatown, a cosmopolitan neighborhood of Johannesburg that was a cultural hotspot in the 1950s before its black residents were forcibly removed by the apartheid government".
Re: njpaul0129 – you're the reason why the world hates americans. stop talking you narrow minded, uneducated retard.
Folks who have never heard her, do yourself a favor and listen to her sing.
Oh, I love her! What a shame:(.May she rest in peace.

R.I.P Mama Africa
You will be missed
Aww. RIP Miriam! Now you're singin' in heaven =)
I'm glad i'm not an ignorant fool like njpaul. I was saddened by her passing. She would be considered before my time (though she has had a great career spanning 4 decades) since i was born in 1984, but I saw her perform with Paul Simon on his Graceland concert dvd, and i was blown away. May her beautiful spirit forever rest in peace.
I live in Johannesburg and can honestly say that she was one of the TRUE african singers. If anyone knows the Bic Click song.. You will know she will be a true legend! And all the Americans out there who have sent your wishes, its nice to know that you aren't all dicks like njpaul….
Mama Africa….. RIP…
Im from South Africa and was quite srprised to see this on your site. Its great to know that Americans actually knew of Miriam Makeba and respected her music. She forms a great part of South African history. May she Rest in Peace.

Someone probably poisoned her, poor lady! It's time for an autopsy!!!
What a Trooper! Was she a solo act, or were there others?
What a Trooper! Was she a solo act, or were there others? I doubt if it was poison. Nobody said it was murder. We can give thanks for the message of hope and joy that Miriam brought to the world. Now, the U.S. is finally changing, thanks to people like her.
Guys please do yourself a favour and listen to Mama Africa's songs, I also live in Johannesburg and have been so touched by her music. May she rest in eternal peace. Lala ngoxolo Mama
I am sure you know squat about her,Apartheid or indeed SA in general.Let alone Miriam's personal family tragedies which are numerous. This obit is a bit gratuitous and offends some of us S/Africans.
