Hot Topic Tries To Explain Things To Twilight Fans

Filed under: Twilight > Robert Pattinson

wenn1897604__opt.jpg

In response to the havoc wrecked by hordes of tweenie girls in San Francisco earlier this week and after Wednesday's promotion in Chicago left hundreds of fans disappointed, Hot Topic's CEO just issued the following statement to PerezHilton.com:

To all of the supporters of Hot Topic and fans of TWILIGHT:

Although no explanation will correct the situation that occurred in Chicago today at the Orland Square Mall, I wanted to attempt to explain what happened from our point of view.

We do many signings all over the country with large crowds so we have processes and systems in place to ensure a smooth experience for our customers. The mall developer was a partner in the planning; however, as of two days ago, they told us they would not allow any fans to line up prior to 6AM. They required them to be off the premises.

On Monday at 6AM at the San Francisco event, the fans became disorderly and stormed the mall entrance. Mall security, numerous police, fire officials and our team from HT stepped in to calm the crowd and create a safe environment for the fans. The event was revised and went forward with the exception of the planned Q&A.

Monday’s event caused all of us to re-group and review the process. Allowing a “mob” to develop was dangerous and frankly, not an option. The mall developer (GGP) consented to allowing an orderly line to form prior to 6AM outside of the remainder of the malls on the tour. When our crew arrived yesterday at midnight, approximately 500 people were already lined up to purchase tickets. By 1AM, there were 700 people in line. It was about 30 degrees and raining. We had to make a call. We knew the first 500 would get wristbands and felt it was the right call to allow those waiting beyond 500 to go home and avoid the cold, wet weather for the remainder of the morning. Given the demand, anyone arriving after midnight would have been too late to obtain a wristband.

We understand your frustration and anger, but from our standpoint, we had no choice but to change the rules after Monday’s event. We knew some would feel it unfair as they were told one thing and when arriving on the scene, something else was reality. But given the choice of risking a disorderly crowd, a dangerous situation and canceling of the event, we made a decision that we felt was the right thing to do. I support our team and the mall for making safety and, given the weather, health the priorities.

There are two remaining locations for “Edward” appearances, King of Prussia in Philadelphia and Square One in Saugus MA. Both malls have consented to allowing an orderly line form early, first come, first serve. Exact line-up locations are posted on the hottopic.com website.

We sincerely apologize and hope that the facts help you to better understand the situation.

Betsy McLaughlin
CEO, Hot Topic

Betsy's a good person. I've always taken her words to heart and think others who haven't worked for the company should follow suit in this situation.

  15. 15

dude I said this on Monday–give McP a staidum to do signings, ya'll! He just kicked a bunch of tweens into puberty early–of course their wacked out libidos will be causing riots and broken noses in a haze of Pattinsonian lust! Not only is he kicking tweens into puberty — he's causing peri-menopausal Twilightmoms to kick back INto puberty.

Robert McP is a freaking weapon of mass sexual destruction!

Re: Listen To Mayday Parade – Kristen and Rob are very dedicated actors. So fuck off.
Oh and use spell check dummy, you spelled bragging wrong!

  18. 18

Re: addicted_2_twilight – People have the right to voice their opinions you idiot. Or do they not teach you that in Stephenie Meyer's cult?

  19. 19

I'm glad that they've chosen to issue a statement, but I still feel that they should've been much more pro-active about the entire series of events. It's not like they had no idea that Rob had such an avid following.

  20. 20

Why the hell have they said Edward appearances. Its Rob Pattinson for fk sake.

  21. 21

ppsh, they're gonna have to do it at madison square gardens more like.

  22. 22

He's hot. I understand why that fangirls love him, but I would never wait in line to meet him or have him sign an autograph. I feel sorry for him that he has to do these events.

    23

why is it all about teens..i'm a grown woman and i love it! wait..does that make me pathetic? lol!

  24. 24

That's a good answer, I'm satisfied. Go Twilight! Next time do something like this in a 2,500 auditorium!

  25. 25

    Re: MR
No way! I'm 20 and I'm completly obsessed with the Twi-world!

  26. 26

I reside in DFW and he was in Dallas yesterday. Decided not to attend because of those crazy hormonal teens screaming in Rob's poor ears! Would have rather meeting him at different time/different settings. Disappointed in Hot Topic's limitation of wrist bands. They made a half-assed decision for those. Hope they learned something out from San Franascio mayhem! Never underestimate the power of rabid fans!

  27. 27

obviously hot topics customer base and twilight fans are assmonkeys with no manors.
dont know how to behave in public.morons.

  28. 28

    Re: Cityprincess
no @ the RPattz events there were 500, Kristen Stewart got 500 and for Taylor Lautner, Edi Gathegi and Rachelle Lafevre spots were available

  29. 29

well i feel bad for these people from other palces! i live in Dallas and got there at 2am yesterday to purchase my ticket. it was so crazy, there was like no line and everyone was going crazy and the POLICE were yelling at people and pushing them. but it ended up being worth it because i was number 308 out of 500. last night when i met Rob he was really nice and sweet. i just felt kinda bad for him because during the Q&A everytime he brought the mike up to his mouth to talk girls started screaming! one even started screaming right in front of him when he was signing her poster!! he is such a good sport for putting up with all the crazies! Rob's mom if you are reading this i feel for you and your son. ( :

    Re: MR

Nope ur not! I'm 34 and I'm obessed with this too! :o )

  31. 31

  32. 32

Re: haleeyx – oops i should have said I don't blame them :)

  33. 33

    My friend went to the one in san francisco, she said it was a disaster;;

  34. 34

C'mon people, let's be serious…did ANYONE really expect Twilight to become THIS massive?? I mean, I imagined that it would be a popular movie and they'd sell a lot of tickets, but the magnitude of the Twilight hype has blasted through the roof, seemingly in the last few months as the movie approaches. In all fairness to Hot Topic, I don't think anyone could have predicted that this many enamored teen girls from all corners of the country would trek hundreds of miles to go to the event. I think the Twilight tour became a LOT more than people expected.

  35. 35

I must say that I feel kind of bad for Pattinson. I'm sure it's nice knowing that so many girls/women are swooning over you, but at the same time, the guy's gotta feel smothered. I mean, he can't even walk around an airport without attracting mobs. I guarantee that will get old fast. I hope he can handle it!!

  36. 36

i almost went to the one in phillie. but im not skipping classes and driving three hours to get there and not even be able to get in. they need more places in PA, not just one spot. plus i cant believe all these tweens are able to skip school.

  37. 37

wow, It looks like they had to make a decision, it sucks for people who weren't aware of it, but it seems like they did the right thing.

  38. 38

Re: TexasVampire – i agree. i'd rahter not meet rob when a bunch of 14 year olds are screaming.

  39. 39

*is* turning into a crazy phenomenon? It already is an insane teen thing. The fans are insane.

  40. 40

Re: Major Dude – No, but I'll piss on his head just make you happy.

  41. 41

I just find it scary and kinda sad how devoted some bored people can be to a movie

    44

Maybe if he wasn't so sexy..

  45. 45

Yep, this movie is going to be major. But I don't really think the movie is what people want, its the book that people are obsessed with so the movie is the closest thing they can get to the real deal. Well that's how it is for most of the people I know.

  46. 46

UGH…another thing for me to hate!

  47. 47

Re: addicted_2_twilight – Couldn't have said it better myself! THANK YOU!

  48. 48

omg love them! She's gorgeous but her face looks kindof wierd in this pic.

  49. 49

I am in my forties and I loved the books. Does anyone remember Dark Shadows with Barnabus Collins?

  50. 50

Yeah, seriously. I refuse to go to the midnight showing because I know it will just be filled with screaming 13 year olds.
These people didn't seem to understand that Robert is an actor. Edward Cullen does not exist. Good god…

  54. 54

I am a twenty-something Twilight fan and a teacher. For and adult, these books are a quick, easy, enjoyable beach read. For these tweens that have read the book, this must be SO exciting for them. The characters they have read and imagined up are now coming to a screen near them. Remember, its not so much the movie as it is the book that is getting them excited. This being said, we as a public should be extremely PROUD that these tweens are READING, something that has been missing from a child for such a long time. In the era of social networking sites, I think its a great thing that these young adults have found a hobby in a book, rather then posting R-Rated pictures of themselves on the internet.

  55. 55

Re: Listen To Mayday Parade – What work are you referring to? Have you seen her in Speak? It was one of the most amazing performances I've seen. I think she's going to be phenomenal in this role.

  56. 56

    Re: twilightteach
Also, the book instills many values that young girls today are missing. This book shows them that a man that is true at heart will wait for them no matter the circumstance, protect them as well as they can, and that they are indeed worth waiting for. I really thing the character of both Edward and Jacob has set the bar high for these tweens' standards in a boy. Though of course some may be unrealistic, at least they can see that they are WORTH it. I've talked to students about this book and the great thing about it is that they want to KEEP READING. That's so awesome in my mind, and I think that's great. Let them see that there is more to life then myspace and significant others that don't treat them the way they deserve to be treated.
on the other hand, what is wrong w/ these parents allowing them to skip school? ah well, can't win them all…

  57. 57

    Re: twilightteach
    ps.. sorry about the typo's!

  58. 58

i must be getting old……the amount of time i spend here, and i still don't know these people or wtf twilight is…..

  59. 59

    Re: Tinkerbella

I'm in my 30s and never heard of Dark Shadow series. Good? I'm a huge fan of Kenyon's Dark Hunter series though.

  60. 60

PEREZ!!!! YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT THE LAUGHING ON MYSPACE, THEY OPENED FOR THE TING TINGS IN Austin TX AT THE PARRISH A FEW WEEKS AGO AND THEY ARE THE BEST BAND EVER! and real hootttt, they too, love David Byrne

  61. 61

Perez perez Perez….. do a little research. I think the figures stand about even at the over 25y/o and the below 25 fan bases. So it's not just "tweenie" girls doing this.

  62. 62

Re: TexasVampire – It was a soap opera that ran in the 60's and into the 70's it had a vampire named Barnabus Collins. It was good for it's time. I will have to check out Kenyon's Dark Hunter series.

  63. 63

Re: addicted_2_twilight – first off, who cares about my spelling its a blog, and secondly its MY opinion and im sorry that your too addicted to the book series to realize im right.

and i didnt say they werent dedicated actors, i just said she SUCKS and that he is average. they arent bella and edward so get over it. the movie will suck anyways. the books are always better. plus, as im sure you have watched all the trailers, you see the flaws just like i do. nothing seems to be the same as the book. not the alley scene, not the scene where she says he is a vampire, her hair always being curled and nice, and her prancing around in her underwear.. just to name a few from the two minute trailers..

  64. 64

Robert can suck my ….. blood anyday ! he's hot

  65. 65

All of the boys and all of the girls are begging to IF YOU SEEK AMY!

  66. 66

Hey! Did they issue a statement about how your shiteous sweatshop clothes line failed and why it's in the discount bin and has been discontinued?
    Just wondering, kthxbye

  67. 67

You got a shoutout on Olbermann. Wooohooo

  68. 68

    DON'T WRITE ON EDWARD!

  69. 69

they are going to have to these events at arenas or HAVE MORE PEOPLE. i mean 250 is basically the amount that get in and the they each get 2.

so make it 100 because seriously. ROB would not mind. Haha jk
i would kill bitches if i were him

  70. 70

I like what I read somewhere…….Twilight Haters are just people that haven't read the book. I'm 28 and I read all of them in one week. It's been a while since I have found a story that hooked me like this one did. People shouldn't rip on people for having a hobby. Sometimes it's nice to throw yourself in to a book and leave the real world behind for a bit. And I didn't like Rob Pattinson for this roll until I read the book and now I can't picture anyone else playing Edward. He and Kristen do a awesome job in their roles. Can't wait to see it!

  71. 71

i went to this event today at 4:30am in chicago. It was completely unfair of them to let people who were there last night get wristbands. If we would have known they were giving out tickets last night, we all would have been there. It is really upsetting. I will no long shop at Hot Topic, and I will be spreading the word to others as well.

  72. 72

    oh my…

  73. Taren says – reply to this

    73

Robert's character doesn't have fangs, Perez. If you had read the books instead of jumping behind the movie because it's going to be popular you'd know that.

  74. 74

    Re: Tinkerbella

You will love her series! Mad Bad and Immortal! There are talks of a TV series and I hope to see it happen!

  75. 75

the things i would do to that man… lol

  76. 76

    Re: Listen To Mayday Parade
as always I couldn't agree with you more. People (i.e. the Twilight Cult) are so caught up in the Twilight books that they don't see how bad this movie is going to be. I'm a media production major and from a production standpoint, it is horrendous. From an acting standpoint, it is horrible as well. Kristen Stewart really is a horrible actress. I saw 10 minutes of the movie that got leaked online a few weeks ago. It was HORRIBLE!!! It seriously looked like she was just reading off of cue cards the whole time. She also seems SO stuck up and snobby. =(

  77. 77

To those fans that are upset because Rob wasn't able to visit different cities in your state, shut up. At least he CAME to your state!! I'm in friggin' Florida. Ugh.

An arena or stadium would have been much better than dinky little malls. Never underestimate the power of hormonal obsessed tweens.

  78. 78

Re: twilightteach – You're sooooo right!! I was just thinking that the other day. And imagine how many more will be into opera and classical music now that they know Edward enjoys it. At least they'll know Clair De Lune. :) I say that Robert should come out with a CD of him just playing classical music on the piano. Make a profit AND enlighten a teen at the same time!!

  79. 79

Re: dish79 – FYI, that is completely untrue. Most of them are unsatisfied readers like me. I have read the whole Twilight series. I'm not a complete "hater", as I admit that I liked the first one, but I think the series definitely got worse from there, culminating in the shit bomb that is Breaking Dawn. So yeah, I've read the books, and I don't think they are nearly worth all the attention they are getting.

Btw, you're 28 and you read them all in a week? I think someone needs a life…or a boyfriend. Poor Rob…he must be seriously freaked out when all these older women approach him all oggle-eyed and practically drooling right along with their daughters. You shouldn't even be admitting you're reading it if you're over 25. Cuz, ya know, you're supposed to have a life by then…and it's a little sad if you're still baited by teenage hormonal crap. Get your sunglasses and hoodie out before you admit that shit.

  80. 80

that is soooooooo unfair to those of us who were completely screwed over on monday morning in san francicso when everyone who got there early was forced to go home, and all the tickets were sold to 11 year old girls who got there at 10 o clock with their moms.

  81. 81

    bottom line, hot topic sucks.

  82. 82

It's things like that make me feel embarressed to be a fan of Twilight.

  83. 83

    lmfao.
they're bigger than the blownas brothers.

  84. 84

    Re: crimson.shamrock
    LOL!!!!! NICE!!!!!!!!!!!
And I'm with you. I've read the entire series so I'm not hating on the books… I'm hating on the Movie and it's Suckyness!!!!!!

  85. 85

    Re: eclair
    Amen!

  86. 86

omg i cant wait for the latin grammys tomorrow !!!! its going to be hosted in houston dont miss it especially because laura pausini will be there and tommy torres is performing its going to be amazing so check it out !!! its worth it

  87. 87

I work at that mall and Thank God i didnt work today…. by the way if there is a celeb @ orland mall they usually walk in from the docs… i saw cool (not) brooke hogan walk in from the doc (d) … it's only you and them and their people… way easier than standing in line.. he doesnt wash his hair anyway- who'd want to be close to that!!

  88. 88

    Perez.
This movie is going to be BIGGER than sex & the city. Trust me. I ordered my tickets online & picked them up on tuesday. The movies I go to in STL already have a "Twilight tickets will be on sale at midnight on Thursday, November 20th."

It's not just tweens. It's every girl's dream. I'm 17 myself & I am absolutely in love with his character.

  89. 89

if it was 30 degrees and raining, it'd be snowing!! hmm…

  90. 90

Re: crimson.shamrock – Wowzers! You got something against women that are older than 25? I'm 30 and I absolutely loved the first book. The second book was torture, the third was tolerable, then the fourth was hideous. Now, that doesn't mean that I won't watch all 4 movies (because you KNOW there will be 4 movies..) because I do love Edward and Bella. I hope Stephanie gets back on her A-game and writes better from here on out. The devoted fans deserve something better than Vampires turned X-men. Oh, and I also read the series in 1 week. My husband left for Iraq 2 weeks before and my friend lent me Twilight to keep my mind off of him for awhile. :)

    91

Robert Pattinson takes some very good pictures. He can be a little wacky in his interviews.

  92. 92

    BULLSHIT!

They said that there were numerous police officers, fire officals, security, and Hot Topic employees?

Not unless they were hidden as teenaged girls that were pushing to the door.

I arrived there at 4am in SF and was 322 in line. There was ONE SECURITY GUARD who was MAYBE 25 years old. Probably younger. I felt SO BAD for him. Around 5am police officers did arrive but left around 6am. As soon as they were gone, ALL the girls that came after the 500th person came (there were about 1000 people there by then) RUSHED the front door. It wasn't unil 720AM that the police officers showed up. Around 730 the firemen showed up. I STILL HAD NOT SEEN A HOT TOPIC EMPLOYEE!

It was cancelled, not "revised". IT WAS CANCELLED. It was not until 830 that a Hot Topic employee emerged and apologized for having to cancel the event.

People that waited until 330pm outside the mall were allowed to buy tickets and were let it.

    Sorry, I have a life.

  93. 93

Oh and also, to all you people that are like "they deserved that!" shit…

Did you forget to attend your history classes? It's called Mob Mentality. When there is ABSOLUTLY no organization (which there wasn't) then people get unruly. Yes, they're ignorant and annoying, but it's what happens. If I knew it would have been 3000 people or even this bad, I wouldn't think twice about going. I just thought it would be a fun thing for my birthday.

Also, I love how Hot Topic is lying so much. They're acting as if they were totally organized and ready for all this to happen. They had no idea.

  94. 94

And to the Kristen Stewart haters. Check out Speak. They originally wanted a 17 year old actress to play the 14 year old character because no one that young could handle the all the emtions that that character had to had. They found 15 year old Kristen and she was perfect. Also, watch her in Panic Room, Into the Wild, and The Land of Women. She's an amazing actress. I would love you to reccomend a movie to me where Kristen flat out sucks, because I think you're very ignorant on this subject.
Another side note, when a movie is made from a book, yes, it's going to be worse. It is very rare that it's amazing. Personally, I liked the Harry Potter movies, White Oldeander, and Girl, Interupted. The movies and the books. Sometimes you have to have a thing called an "open mind" where you take a movie and you say "movie" then you take a book and you say "book". Nothing can be exactly alike. You can't project what's going on in your mind onto a television screen. So get over it. You're all being extremely rude and judgemental. How about we wait until the movie comes out?

  95. 95

    i love rob.

  96. 96

my friend met him, touched him and later found out she had pink eye…so she MAY have given him pink eye lol .
also her sisters boyfriend stood next time him peeing in the bathroom and saw his junk

  98. 98

yes robert pattinson was just in dallas for a nightmarishly planned event by Hot Topic.
i know -because i dropped my daughter and four of her friends off at the galleria at 4 in the morning–shortly after they got there, they were moved -are you ready?–across the street to wait under the overpass for the doors to open–all of this is in the rain mind you……
while they were made to wait in the most dangerous place possible, another large group of girls arrived and were hurried in to get the wristbands and t-shirts.–all the while my daughter and the "overpass" group are still huddled together under the highway—-crowd control–sure,o.k.got it—but under the highway across the street from the mall??scary??
i am the most laid back person on the planet–but them is truly fightin' words when you are talking about my childs safety—i am shocked no one from here has pulled the lawsuit card yet–i mean what a clusterfuck of gigantic proportion—-unbelievable..

  99. 99

I just want to say that it was very courteous of hot topic to let the fans in early. It saved people the time of waiting hours in line to only be declined at the door. I got there a little before 1 am, and the line was already near the 500 mark. So regardless of what time after that someone would have gotten there, they would not have gotten a wristband. 500 people is 500 people, no matter what time of day it is.

Plus I just want to say that Robert was so handsome, and he seems very down to earth and humble. It was really nice of him to take the time to do all this for his fans. It was a pleasure to be able to meet him, even just briefly.
I do feel bad for him since there were God knows how many fangirls screaming their heads off. Which I don't think is a good way to approach anything.

Also I would like to point out that he is NOT Edward Cullen. He is Robert Pattinson, and he is playing the character of Edward Cullen. Just thought I'd clarify for all the people who actually refer to him as Edward.

I registered for commenting JUST to tell you it's not wrecked is wreaked. wreaking havoc. not wrecking havoc. THOUSANDS of people read this site every day, many of them stupid and young like most american school-goers and they look up to you and will copy the things you write. they can't all be internet personalities…these people need to know how to spell if they want to get real jobs when they grow up.
