Gloria Estefan was named Person of the Year at the Latin Grammy Awards on Thursday night.
The Cuban icon is the first woman ever to be given that honor!
And, as if that wasn't enough, our hometown hero also notched wins for Best Traditional Tropical Album and Tropical Song for 90 Millas and Píntame De Colores, respectively.
All very well deserved!

It sickens me to an immeasurable degree on how pathetic you all are who bash the Queen of Latin Pop, Gloria Estefan. Unlike Madonna, Mariah and others who use nothing but sex and scandals to further advance their careers, Gloria embodies sheer class and sophistication, propelling her to the admirable iconic status she has long possessed.
In all actuality, the ghastly reasons mentioned for her dislike are far from being justified. I don't know any artist who has sold over 90 million albums while having a "terrible" voice. Granted, Gloria may not be able to belt like cokehead Whitney or psychotic Mariah (both of whom can't sing for shit anymore). However, she does possess a type of voice that is motherly, comforting, rich, emotive and most of all — sincere. She sings from the bottom of her heart, regardless if it is a sultry upbeat jam or a sensual ballad. In addition, she has written nearly all of her hits that people have grown to love. How about "Always Tomorrow"? "Reach"? "Coming Out of the Dark"? These songs have saved so many souls around the world, including mine.
… Many pop stars' careers are so fickle, as we all chastise and ridicule whenever they aren't on top or are going through a disheartening time. Gloria has continuously put Latin Americans in a positive light, an aspect no one in their right mind can possibly argue with. She has had total control of her career, doing what she feels is best. Miss Estefan exemplifies beauty, elegance, grace, compassion and talent — all wrapped into one. I mean, she has been married to the same man (her husband/producer Emilio) for 30 years! She isn't a facade. Gloria Estefan is real deal. What you see is what you get.
It is completely asinine to despise her solely on her political or religious beliefs. As with all Cuban Americans, Cuba will forever play a very active role in their respective lives. Their love for their "unknown" homeland is spoken through their preaches, stories and, in Gloria's case, her songs. All of these methods of communication serve as testimonies for the yearning of a free homeland. Really, what make her so annoying to some of you? …
WHY SO MANY HATERS HERE COME GIVE SOME SLACK AND PEREZ SOME RESPECT FOR THE CUBAN HERITAGE I glad the cubans have role models to look up to and Gloria and SAntana are as classy as they come and deserve some respect here it sad with all the hate in everyone hearts here come on lets celebrate.
… I've met the Cuban legend a few times and she is one of, it not, the most sincere, welcoming and loving women I have ever met. She her modesty and appreciation with each and every fan, a rarity in today's entertainment industry. Gloria has never been about the glitz, glamour and pizzazz. She has, since the very beginning, been in this business for the sole passion of making music, while opening the door for Latinos in America, as well as worldwide. In addition, she has been an active humanitarian, contributing to several organizations as well as continuing to devote time to her own foundation, including the fight in finding a cure for paralysis.
Gloria deserved being crowned the Latin Recording Academy's Person of the Year for all of the reasons mentioned above. Anyone who criticizes her for being real obviously isn't real with themselves. ¡Gloria, para siempre!

Although my friends don't particularily care for her, they have respect for her and her talent. Every individual I've come across has never had anything negative to say about Gloria.
It really annoys me at the sheer ignorance people have. They think all Latinos are Mexican, when, as you mentioned, Latinos consist of individuals from all Latin countries around the world. I'm Dominican, so it angers me whenever someone automatically classifies myself as Mexican. People need to get their fucking heads out of their asses!
