Boycott Sundance

The movement to skip the film festival in January is catching steam!

You will support the Mormons if you go. You WILL support the taking away of equal rights for gays!

Geee, you mean traffic might be less than the usual 20hr/day gridlock at this year's film festival? Good riddance to you and all your faggy friends Mario.

    2. 302

      NO MORE SUNDANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    3. 303

Why don't you go protest the Black and Latino churchs who overwhelming voted yes? Thanks, Perez, I'm going to ski Park City this year instead of Colorado. P.S. THIRTY states put the same measure on their ballots and 30 states passed it. STFU.

…oooop! I almost forgot these. Let me rephrase my original suggestion too since whether I go to Sundance is not the operative function. Let's NOT SPEND OUR GAY $$$ at Cinemark Cinemas in these communities. The President of Cinemark will come much closer to getting our message than if Sundance, where the chain seems to have the major share of the market.

    10. 310

Re: knowitall – Reading your posts is painful. You need to check your shit before you hit submit. I was in the Army during the late 80s and early 90s when "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was fairly new. IMO, DADT, protects gays and lesbians. I know that simple minds don't see that, but I saw what happened to people who came out in the military. They got the SHIT kicked out of them. I believe that there is nothing wrong with gays serving, but when you have gays hitting on straight people in the military, they are going to get their ass kicked, some of them have even gotten killed. There is a lot of drinking in the military and that type of thing won't be tolerated amongst the ranks and alcohol fuels hatred. Yes, it's sad, but that's life.

    11. 311

Re: b a t k i s s – This is stupid. So, you want people to protest these movie theaters, so that business slows down (which BTW, it won't), but you think nothing of hurting the workers there that may lose their jobs IF business should slow. Well, I already have my tickets to the River in Rancho Mirage for Twilight this weekend. YEAH! I'm going to buy lots of stuff for my kid at the snack bar. Like I said in one of my earlier posts, if you even read the article, that the movie chain is trying to separate itself from the donation made. The donation was made as a Personal contribution, not one in the name of the theater. So, get real. Play 6 degrees of separation on all the people that donated to YES and you probably won't be able to go anywhere.

    12. 312

The point is that even if boycotting makes the mormon community "pay" for what they believed to be right, it doesn't change the fact that it has already been done. This is America, they voted, and the majority won. You can't hate people for their beliefs. For most people it's a religious thing, it doesn't mean they hate gays. Let it go. You don't see republicans boycotting anything; there is no point! Except it for now and move on.

    13. 313

I am getting so tired of everyone, and I mean everyone in the whole damn world thinking that Utah only has Mormons. I am a very liberal democrat from California that protested twice at the Temple against their position on Prop 8. Sundance is not for the Mormons. It is really not their favorite thing so boycotting it isn't going to do jack shit! I'm not Mormon. I didn't support Prop 8. I'm not an ignorant, homophobic bigot like everyone is assuming about all people who live in Utah. Please don't make such broad generalizations about people. I don't discriminate and neither should you.

    14. 314

Re: melissa9603 – You're saying you don't discriminate but you say you protested twice at a temple. HMMMM….that sounds pretty discriminatory to me. HYPOCRITE!

    15. 315

Re: devil_dawg_wife – Why should I spend my GAY $$$ at a company which is run by a man who votes with his dollars to restrict the rights of gay citizens? WHY?
      +
In many, many, many states in this country a gay person can be FIRED from their job for being gay. Seems to me "Personal" action is already cause for financial impact.
      +
I am not necessary suggesting we organize active demonstrations at these business, just don't spend your GAY $$$ there. Let's keep an eye on their corporate action and policy execution however. It's completely logical the corporation is trying to separate itself from the action of its CEO. Let's see if they counter this negative perception by extending themselves financially to the LGBT community.

    16. 316

I just read an interesting article about how blacks could have helped overturn prop 8. I t claims blacks are tired of gays hitching their cause to their civil rights issue and since a record amount of blacks turned out to the polls they probably had a lot to do with the outcome. Are you going to start boycotting black people now Perez? Come on you hypocrite.

    17. 317

Re: b a t k i s s – In which states can a person be fired for being gay? That's a bunch of BS. You need to back that statement.

    18. 318

      Please understand, people!

Park City is NOT a Mormon town! We in PC have always supported gay rights, as we will all through this year's Sundance. Boycotting is ridiculous! I say, take Utah back and flood the place with different viewpoints. The more — and the more diverse — the merrier!

    19. 319

Hate to break it to you but you would be hard pressed to find a practicing mormon (even just a mormon actually) in Park City, UT. It's a resort town-very few people actually live there. It's known as a "mini California" due to it being a liberal community. No one that lives in Park City is FROM Park City–that's why it's a liberal community. I lived there for several years so I speak from first hand experience. You aren't hurting the Mo's just the festival which has nothing to do with Prop 8.

    20. 320

      Re: melissa9603
Yes, it is true that Utah is not filled 100% with mormons but the vast majority of the state is mormon. Non mormons are treated pretty shitty by a lot of the residents. Not all, just a good majority. Park City, however, is a whole different animal. Park City is where all the bars and whorehouses were located back in the old days so it's always been a "tainted" town in the eyes of the mormons.

    21. 321

Guess who else you will be hurting if you boycott Sundance? All of the gay people that work in the Service Industry that count on Sundace each year for income.

Stop being so damn one sided people, it is stupid. Where were the protests when the Utah (or any of there other many states) constitution was changed to prohibit same sex marriage? Where was the outrage then? Why are we not boycotting the other 40 states that have similar bans.

This fight is about equal rights, not about which churches speak out against gay marriage (probably at least 90% of them)…some are more vocal than others.

I don't like the churches stance, or any other church that try to push their morals on us. However, because of freedom of speach and freedom of religion in our country they have the RIGHT to speak out for their beliefs, even if we don't like it.

Yes, I'm gay, Yes I'm from Utah and No I'm not Mormon.

    22. 322

Re: devil_dawg_wife – It is still legal in 30 states to fire someone based on their sexual orientation and in 38 states, it is still legal to do so based on their gender identity.

While polls consistently show that most Americans believe employment discrimination is wrong and support equal rights in the workplace, only 20 states have laws to enforce these beliefs (CA, CO, CT, HI, IA, IL, MD, MA, ME, MN, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OR, RI, VT, WA, WI and the District of Columbia).
      +
Thank you PFLAG for the source information. Much LOVE for all you do!
      +
Now, can you tell me WHY is should spend my GAY $$$ at a company run by a man who votes with his dollars to restrict the rights of gay citizens?

    23. 323

      Re: Rini J
      thank you!
everyone has to know that the mormons arent involved in sundance!
      come on
liquor, explict sex scenes, nudity, art, gay and lesbian friendly…. all oppose mormon traditions
dont be fooled people perez is wrong… hes an idiot to believe that destroying art is good!

    24. 324

Re: b a t k i s s – Then why not focus as a group, getting rid of that type of discrimination? That's wrong. That is something that can be fought. The gay community needs to regroup and focus on HOW they can defeat Prop 8 in the NEXT election, but in the meantime, they can focus their energies on something like this or the other umpteen states that in no way recognize civil unions or same sex partner rights.

    25. 325

      Re: kikique
more than that it hurts the small part of the industry too… people who are trying to make it as artists not just the big corporation
IF YOU LISTEN TO PEREZ YOU ARE A H8ER AGAINST ART!!!!!

Perez, if you can guilt trip people i can do it too!
PEREZ IS TRYING TO TAKE AWAY CULTURE!

    26. 326

      Re: knowitall
      then you are an idiot
sundance has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the mormons!
are you really that stupid not to see sense?
Hello?!?!? Knock knock knock! anyone in that head? NOPE!
ok now that we have that established
Sundance goes against many mormon traditions and rule… liquor at functions? mormons dont drink and dont believe in coffee or anything to "alter the mind in anyway"
Sundance is gay and lesbian friendly you moron! hello! gays and lesbians live in park city! you small minded person
Sundance also has nudity, sex scenes, explicit language… all things mormons dont agree with….

    27. 327

      Re: Saint Joan
      you are dumb
it helps the park city community
which is mostly non mormon… look it up

    28. 328

Move Sundance to a gasy friendly winter wonderland Mr. Redford!

    29. 329

Move Sundance to a gay friendly winter wonderland Mr. Redford! BOYCOTT UTAH!!!!!

    30. 330

      Re: guitarchild
      right behind you
      Perez dont com to utah
      we dont need you!
you are against art and culture! now thats screwed up!

    31. 331

      Re: knowitall
Great I'll be sure to give them extra support, you're such an IDIOT if you're a representation of the Gay Community no wonder people voted against you. Instead of Boycotting maybe you should take a nice long stare in your Mirror and figure out why Noone likes you. I've becoming so disgusted with you and Perez and all the Gay Supporters on here being so Idiotic and hateful you've all just convinced me to not support your cause at all…Yes on Prop 8!

    32. 332

      Re: knowitall
      ok you stereotyping bitch
      you are dumb
      utah is not mormon
im in utah. i have never even met a mormon. and ive been coming here for 13 yrs
mormonism is one of the fastest growing religions in the world and just cause they settled here hundreds of years ago doesnt mean the highest concentrations are here in utah… actually if you knew anything…. you would know that mormons get sent on missions all over the world. mormons are everywhere and you dont even know it cause you are too busy stereotyping an area that was actually founded by miners looking for silver! Park City was a mining town now its a ski town. not a mormon town you freaking imbecile

    33. 333

I never said I was Mormon..I said I LIVED in UTAH. Just because I live in utah doesn't mean I'm mormon you dumb fuck KnowitAll..
LOL and I'm saying let's HATE. Mario is annoying as ever. He needs to shut the fuck up. He deserves a good bitch Slap. And I don't care if I got charged with assault it would be well worth it.

    34. 334

I can see people are finally reading this post this morning. If you notice KNOWITALL's posts, the spelling and grammatical errors and even his "name" it points to Perez. I wasn't the only one to point that out last night. Don't you agree?

    35. 335

      Re: knowitall
      you are a stereotyping bitch
i thought we were alllllllll fighting against stereotypes and everyone is equal
      you are a hypocrite
you have no idea what the truth is.
do you think all gays are flamers?
do you think all lesbians are butch?
do you think that all stereotypes are right?
      back off bitch
cause not everyone in utah is mormon… actually they are the minority by far in park city

    36. 336

      Re: SwisKris
this is a gay friendly winter wonderland you unintelligent freak

Park city is full of gays and lesbians…. it is one of the most liberal cities for hundreds of miles….
its a chill little ski town… until sundance… which is fun… but get your freaking facts straight you pig headed imbecile

    37. 337

And btw Bitch slapping someone you dislike how does that go beyond hate? LOL I think it goes hand in hand rather well. And I promise you this Mario if you DO decide to show up which would be stupid because you already said you were going to Boycott it. (Which is EFFING hilarious to me because Sundance has nothing to do with the Mormons) Be expecting a bitch slap right across your ugly face. If I don't do it…I'm sure someone else will do it to you in the near future. You can only say so much shit about people before it comes back to haunt you. It's not good to make the wrong enemies.

    38. 338

Re: imuri86 – This is soooo true! You know Perez, practice what you preach you dumbass. You are giving GAY people a BAD name, stop just stop with your stupidity on Mormons. This is ALL you ever talk about now!

    39. 339

Re: devil_dawg_wife – I appreciate your re-consideration of the issues connected to discrimination. The gay community has been focused on these issues, sometimes with more intensity and success, since the late 1960s (and a few brave pioneers even before then.) We celebrate the many, many, many successes and have learned volumes from our defeats. The Prop8 vote is extra significant to us because it TOOK AWAY rights which were in place, you see. The LGBT response to Prop8 is directly connected to the big picture of true equality for citizens.
      +
Speaking of big pictures, enjoy your movie with the kids this weekend. Love every MOMent with them. And IF the moment comes this weekend or in the years ahead and you learn one of your kids or grandkids is homosexual, know that there are groups like PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians And Gays) to help you understand how important your continued love is.

    40. 340

I thought Sundance was run by Robert Redford, not a Mormon organization! And besides that, the Mormon church has just a much a right to speak out in an election as anyone else in the US - that's what it's all about here in the US, that's why you were able to protest on Saturday.

    41. 341

Re: b a t k i s s – See, we don't have to totally agree, but we can have a civil discussion. I don't hate gay people. I've known many in my life and even have a few relatives that are gay. I think it's sad how so much effort is being focused and turned into hate against others over Prop 8. there are many other issues and battles that the Gay community could put some focus on. Prop 8 is over for NOW, but I'm sure eventually it will come to be shot down, but the protests are only going to hurt their cause.

If one of my children should come to me and tell me that they are gay, I would not think anything less of them and would love them just as I always have. I know that being gay is not a choice (unlike some) that is just the way you are born. I have always taught my children tolerance and respect towards others no matter what. I have a child with a medical condition. She's not a dwarf, but at age 14 she has reached her adult height of 4'7. She will always have to battle how others perceive her. I have taught her to be strong. So, thank you, that we were able to come to the middle of the road and shake hands. Good luck to you.

      Re: knowitall

"fantomas,= Did you say you were german or a nazi, I think nazi with your usual posts" yeah sure, i assumed someone was going to turn my nationality against me - i was right WOOHOO.

so what about my usual posts? i usually write non-political crap, so i think that you're just making up the "fact" german= nazi. how very intelligent of you ; )

as i said in one of my so very nazi comments: i do not know how the laws of marriage and civil partnership are handled in different countries - but this "war" is about marriage, so i was asking - but thanks for your reply and dumb conclusion that i have to be a nazi-communist - no i'm not. now's the question where you are from. accourding to your idiocy i would presume either USA or germany. congrats to your lack of intelligence.

"but some redneck scum in here lied and said that he supported yes on 8, he didnt. " sorry i don't know what you want to tell me.

so goodbye and hopefully you're finding ways of getting more education.

    43. @v@ says – reply to this

      343

Sundance is not about Mormons. It's about supporting Independent films. Talk about a misdirect. Hijacking this independent film festival and making it about another cause entirely is a budding public relations nightmare, as most of Hollywood are supporting the rights of gays. Boycotting small independent films, their makers and their casts is not the right way to go here. That's cutting off your nose to spite your face, and could breed some real ill will.

    44. 344

Being a non Mormon living in Utah….. Perez, you have been to sundance, you are making it out to be a all Mormon film film festival. People come from all over the world to enter their films on one of the greatest film fest's in the country. Perez, you know better than a lot of people on here what a great party it is….. Those of us non Mormons here need that party. Why punish the incredible talent that comes here once a year to show the world what they have created? Who knows one of the great films of the festival could have been written or directed by a gay, lesbian, or trans gender.

perez. you are such an idiot. i read you every day and have loved you. you crack me up but you are being totally unreasonable on this mormon thing! get a grip and stop the hate! what the hell does sundance have to do with mormons!! you are such an ass and i am so mad right now! you are hurting totally innocent and uninvolved people! park city is probably the most liberal place in utah. it has the second lowest population of mormons in the state! are you going to start checking out if a mormon owns your local mcdonalds franchise before you order a big mac? what happens if you accidentally help a mormon child with one of the charities you promote? you are losing it.

    46. 346

      TAKE UTAH BACK!

Consider this: 15 years ago, 70% of Utah residents were Morman. Today, the church-going Mormon population has dropped to just 42%, largely because of newcomers and their influence on new generations of Mormons. If you want to change the status quo, for God's sake, don't boycott Utah — bring on the diversity!!

      Re: knowitall
No those aren't facts. Everything you spew is bullshit. There's not a big conspiracy against gays, sorry, but it's the truth. Californians voted, not Utah. Not everyone in Utah is a mormon. Not all mormons are against gay marriage. Democrats have a large majority in California, if all of the democrats would have voted NO on prop 8 it would have failed. THOSE ARE THE FACTS! Look at your own party. If your party were all on the same page this would have failed. Take a good hard look at your party before you start pointing fingers. You absolutely refuse to admit it, but it's very true the democrats could have killed prop 8 and they did not plain and simple. Being racist towards African Americans and Hispanics just makes you a hateful bigot which you accuse everyone else of.

    48. 348

Dude! Most people that live in the SLC area are actually not mormon. Now if this were to be in Provo, I get it. But seriously…. you are boycotting so many that are not mormon. How unfair are you???

    49. 349

Well, if that's the case how can I get an invite?

    50. 350

Yeah! Let's go boycott the state that Mormons come from to protest Mormons….who don't host the festival?

      Idiot.

I don't understand how some people can actually think boycotting Sundance for gay rights makes any sense. The Unabomber was from Illinois so I think I'll protest the Chicago Bulls. COME ON PEOPLE!

    52. 352

Oh Perez! Not everyone that lives in Utah is mormon. Only about 60% of people that live in Utah are mormon. I live in utah and Im not mormon. I know that it has quite a large gay and lesbian community so boycotting Sundance is hurting them too and hurting the other 40% of the people that live in Utah. Sundance really has nothing to do with mormons. Mormons don't know their who's-its from their what's-its when it comes to anything artistic. If you want to discriminate agains't Utahin's just as much as Mormons are discriminating against you than boycott Sundance. It's up to you, but I am just saying that its biggotry in both directions and I just ask that you think of everyone else that lives in Utah before you boycott.

    53. 353

I have 16 tickets for the Sundance Film Festival if anyone wants some.

    54. 354

Re: knowitall – You can't take away someone's right to vote just because they're not smart according to your standards… the same could said for most of the people that voted in the presidential election… how many people are actually knowledgeable about the issues? Not many… if you ask most people why they voted for either candidate they would most likely throw out a catch phrase or a very superficial answer. What you're saying is just as discriminatory! Deal with it the people have spoken prop 8 passed… I personally think that same sex marriages are a good idea it would inhibit promiscuous tendencies in the homosexual community because of financial consequences involved in divorce. I'm not saying that only homosexuals are promiscuous i think people in generally are slutty and we use things such as marriage to inhibit that kind of behavior. Divorce is a powerful thing!

    55. 355

PEREZ, YOU ARE TOTALLY MISINFORMED ON THIS. I HAVE LIVED IN PARK CITY FOR 5 YEARS - IT'S A LIBERAL TOWN WITH A HIGHLY EDUCATED POPULATION OF PRIMARILY DEMOCRATS AND VERY FEW MORMON. GOING TO PARK CITY FOR SUNDANCE DOESN'T SUPPORT THE MORMONS IN ANY WAY - AND IT TAKES AWAY FROM THE PROSPERITY OF THE SIZABLE GAY COMMUNITY IN PARK CITY. DO YOUR HOMEWORK. WE HAVE A DEMOCRATIC MAYOR WHO IS IN FAVOR OF GAY RIGHTS, A DEMOCRATIC STATE REPRESENTATIVE AND A MAJORITY DEMOCRATIC CITY COUNCIL, NONE OF WHOM ARE MORMON.

    56. 356

Stay away. More room for married couples. Ha!

    57. 357

duh mattykansas Sundance is in utah AND my only point is why can the that pregnant man have kids but gays cant married why aren't the Mormons protesting that ??? Sometimes i hate living in california!!!

    58. 358

Not everyone in Utah is a Mormon. Shall we punish non-Mormons just because they live there? That's what you're calling for, Perez.

      LISTEN UP YOU DUMBSHITS!!!!

Its one thing for Sundance to argue against canceling their entire festival in January, there are good arguments on both sides, but it's quite another for them to say they're going to continue using the cinema of a man who gave $10,000. to the anti-gay bigots supporting Yes on 8. (And it's not just "a" cinema among many, it's "the" main Sundance cinema.) Your Sundance registration money is quite literally helping to subsidize a donation to Yes on 8.

YOUR MONEY WILL GO TOWARDS TAKING AWAY THE RIGHTS OF GAY PEOPLE. CIVIL RIGHTS ARE FOR EVERYONE!!!!!

Boycotting Utah is not the answer. The reason Utah is so ass-backwards is largely due to its isolation. Why do you think Brigham Young picked it? He knew the church would be able to get away with anything free of outside influence. There are MILLIONS of gay couples living in my neighborhood in Salt Lake City alone. It is a very Gay friendly city, and we do have domestic partnership laws allowing anyone who shares domestic responsibilities the same legal rights as married couples. I know it's not as good as real marriage, but for f-ing Utah it's amazing. By avoiding our state you are doing exactly what the Morons want. You are leaving Gay Utahans out in the cold, and allowing these a-holes to continue living their sheltered lives. You need to come here, be queer, and tell these hatemongers to get used it. Instead of boycotting Utah, you should encourage reader to file a 501(c)3 complaint against the LDS church.

P.S. - By boycotting Sundance you will mostly hurt Park City families who count on the festival as part of their yearly incomes. Most people in Park City are not originally from Utah and are not Mormon.
