Wanda Sykes Comes Out!

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayInspirationLGBT

Comedian Wanda Sykes surprised the organizers of the gay rights rally in Las Vegas on Saturday by not only showing up - she was in town to perform standup - but also coming out publicly as a lesbian for the first time.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

More celebs should follow her lead!!!!!!

If people of color saw more gay and lesbian examples in the media - yes, Queen Latifah, we're talking to you - then maybe the black vote would not have been 70% in favor of banning gay marriage.

Wanda beat Oprah out of the closet.

  4. 4

    This is awesome =)

  5. 5

"How can you stop people for loving each other??" This is the BIG question. Im latin, im straight and I do not live in the US but i support your cause!!

But PEREZZZZ you speak about stop H8TE but you act unkind with people like Jeniffer Aniston, the daughter of Adam Sandlen and other celebrities. They are HUMANS LIKE YOU AND I, THEY ARE NOT PERFECT. STOP YOUR ANGER WITH THEM

  6. 6

Go On!! Never knew she was Gay!! Still Fuckin Love her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. 7

Oh my god! I love Wanda even more now that she's lesbian.
Though I did kind of get that vibe from her a few years ago.

  8. 8

  9. 9

wow. my gaydar never picked that one up. she is hilarious.

  10. 10

are you outing people now? if and when other people coime out shouldn't it be on their time, not for your agenda?

  11. 11

Re: flower507 – They are grown adults….they cant take the shots every now and then….

    and sandlers babay is…well…..

  12. 12

"then maybe the black vote would not have been 70% in favor of banning gay marriage"

That's very surprising to me to find that black people would be against gay rights. It was not too long ago that it was black people who were discriminated against and who were fighting for their equal rights. How quickly they have forgotten. You would think that, having been in that position themselves, they'd be the most sympathetic.

  13. 13

I knew she was gay for a while, something she said a while ago, so not really a surprise to most. Most people probably don't care one way or another. It is you, Perez, that has to stop outing people. If someone does not want to be outed, they have their reasons and you should RESPECT that. I don't know the circumstances for you when you came out, but, don't assume that everyone will have this wonderful, empowering experience when they publicly declare themselves gay

  15. 15

Re: Parramore – I agree with you they are adults and they can take the shots but sometimes i feel that perez hates for free and hate just brings hate back to you. Sorry my english is very bad because i speak in spanish. My point is that he choose to hate jen for example, give no explanation and thats the way that intolerant people act. They hate gays with no argument…

  16. 16

Chalk up another one for the pink team! Cha-CHING!

  17. 17

I'm a straight woman, and I SUPPORT YOU. Thank you Wanda (and P) for sharing that with us, it brought tears to my heart and eyes.

  18. 18

Re: flower507 – hate is a strong word….and i do not think he hates aniston….she just puts herself out there and makes it SOOOOO easy!

and i love jenn…..im totally on her side…..

  19. 19

Re: Parramore – well…maybe im missunderstanding Perezz but he just goes to far sometimes…anyways, i LOVE HIM. It was nice to chat with you!! See you :D have a nice sunday

  20. 20

Give the woman a toaster! Welcome Wanda! ;-)

  21. 21

Please check your facts Perez. While 70% of African-American voted for
Prop 8, that population only makes up 6% of the voting population in
Cali. And not enough to make a dent in helping to get the bill passed.
Again stop pointing fingers and own up to the failure of the LGBT
community in Cali. to reach outside of their box. If their efforts had
not only focused on gay friendly areas the outcome may have been
different. But how many organizers were willing to go to Compton and
speak about the No on Prop 8 campaign.

  22. 22

She's my hero. Equal rights for everyone, people!

  23. 23

perez, you called out lindsay lohan for saying 'first coloured president' but now you're saying 'people of colour'. make up your mind!!

  24. 24

Congratulations on your marriage, Wanda! And thank you, thank you, thank you for coming out publically. Funny and brave is a great combination!

  25. 25

First of all….I KNEW IT! Wanda, you are an inspiration for other people of color who are afraid to come out. I support you. You go girl. As a straight African American voter I was shocked at the number of people who supported this proposition. Although it was not proposed in my state I was still amazed at the number of minorities that voted yes. Sadness.

  26. 26

as shocking as when rosie came out

  27. 27

Perez, wes does not likes to bee calls colar, you abnormal fag.

  28. 28

The first time I heard her talk in that first comedy she had, I loved her. She is so funny. No wonder she's gay, they are the nicest people around.

  29. 29

    im so proud of "wanda sykes"way 2go my sista.{GAY 2DAY GAY 2MORROW GAY ALWAYS}

  30. 30

Well done Wanda, well done. See how does being gay bother anyone?????? Some people are gay-get over it!!!!!

  31. 31

  32. 32

    Not surprised.

  33. 33

Seriously, no one thought just MAYBE she was gay? When she starred in those PSA's about using the word gay in a derogatory way, that didn't tip anyone off? Anyway, I already knew it… my friends (lesbians) met her on vacation with her girlfriend but she was keeping it under wraps - fine, her choice.

Also, why are people upset saying Perez "outted" her????? WTF am I missing, she came out publicly in a speech, hello?

  34. 34

umm not the first time she's spoke publicly about being a lesbian. Google is your friend Perez.

  35. 35

    I knew it!

  36. 36

Wow I am really proud of her:)
I just want to say I am straight- and i believe everyone should have equal rights, and I vote no on prop 8-
but, Perez, I would just like to point out one thing to you- if you truly believe in equal rights and everything, dont you believe in the right to privacy and to live your life the way you chose? if your answer is yes, then dont you think that : if in fact Queen Latifah and or Oprah are gay, shouldnt it be up to them if and when they come out as opposed to you forcing them out with all of your comments and innuendo? (as you have Clay & Jodi Foster & that Dougie Houser actor??)
I love you Perez, but I would just like you to be aware of the power you have, and to maybe use it a little more wisely.

  37. 37

Perez, I sent you an email. Please don't blame blacks for the reason Prop 8 got passed in Ca. Yes, 70% voted for it, however blacks do not make up 70% of California's population. It had to take a lot of Whites and Hispanics to also vote to get that to pass. Caliornians regardless of race caused THAT INJUSTICE!

  38. 38

    Ymi, b

  39. 39

    she been out

  40. 40

Re: snaptdot – people of colour is not a slur it means anyone colour anybody who isn't european or white

  41. RDRH says – reply to this

Perez, you're an ass. A stupid one at that. She did not "come out". In order to come out one has to be closeted. Just because people aren't holding fucking infomercials on their sexuality as you would have everyone do, doesn't make them closeted. You are validating that homosexuality is "unique" or different or even bad by making it a must that people make public announcements when they are indeed gay. I have never once got up in front of a crowd to announce my heterosexuality to the world. That's who I am, that's how I was born. Why should a gay person have to do the same? Let him or her live and do what he or she wants with it. You are extremely cruel and quite hypocritical to those who wish to remain "unannounced". And even IFFFFFF someone is closeted, so be it. So. FUCKING. Be. It.
There is nothing worse than a liberal who discriminates, Perez.
Wanda rocks. Perez is an uneducated spic.

  42. RDRH says – reply to this

    Re: JayeBoy

You love her more now that she's a lesbian???? Talk about fucking reverse descrimination. And THIS, folks, is why this country will never get ahead… I'm no conservative, but when the uber-liberals embrace that which is different just to be, well, different, well that's JUST as bad. It's phoney and a bit pretentious. And quite uneducated.

  43. RDRH says – reply to this

And Perez, allow me to reiterate, this is NOT Wanda Sykes coming out. In order to come out one must either a) be in denial or b) be closetd… she was neither. You are so stupid it hurts sometime.

  44. 44

LOL - she's the last one to know.

  45. 45

I don't think it's appropriate for you, Perez, to continue to scapegoat people of color for not passing Prop 8. There is a long and ongoing history of racism and xenophobia WITHIN and BY gay and lesbian communities. The gay and lesbian community has been shut off from people of color and the "gaying" and gentrification of neighborhoods, that is often "pioneered" by gays and lesbians has displaced many people of color. So before gays and lesbians start start blaming other people, perhaps we should look in our own backyards for discrimination.

  46. RDRH says – reply to this

    Re: mcbullhead

Of course not, Perez is an uneducated spic asshole who believes he is the center of the universe.

  47. RDRH says – reply to this

Hey, Aubreyo'day… first comment person. Can you PLEASE translate that shit you just wrote… Do. YOU. SPEAK. ENGLISH?????????????

  48. 48

Good for her. Not surprised, but good for her :)

  49. 49

Re: snaptdot – "people of color" is acceptable terminology. It is used by minorities and it is used by scholars who write about racism, etc. It follows in the tradition of trying to put "people first" and not what makes them subordinate. I.e., a person with disabilities instead of a disabled person, a person with AIDS instead of an AIDS patient, and a person of color instead of idiotic Lohan's "colored person."

  50. 50

this is why the blacks shouldn't be allowed to vote cuz they're ignorant

  51. 51

GOOD FOR YOU, WANDA!!!!!! :) She is so awesome!

  52. 52

What is America turning into it is a sin to be gay.If you chose to sleep with the same sex than fine that your business but being able to get married nooooo.I'm not a christian but I know it is wrong. No other country is for it but America and Europe but that is because your ancestors where all gay.Yes your white ancestors I said. And if you think I'm lying check out your history.

  53. 53

    Re: RDRH

Did you ASK why this person loves Wanda more now that she's a publicly-declared lesbian? I can understand what he was trying to say. I loved her before (I think she's hilarious), but now that she has publicly come out and supported the cause, I have a new respect for her on another level. I think it's very courageous for someone to come out in the first place, but especially when you're in the public eye. There's absolutely nothing wrong with seeing someone in a new way and respecting that.

  54. 54

I knew wanda was a lesbian!! It's kinda sad seeing her do her comedy routine talking about men. She should have done it sooner.

  55. 55

Stop pointing fingers, and plan more outreach into minority communities. Blacks are not the reason Prop 8 didn't pass, but if you want to know why acceptance of Homosexuals is not apparent in minority communities, it's because they are still recovering from the on going effects of Racism. REACH OUT AND MAKE ALLIES INSTEAD OF ACCUSATIONS.

  56. 56

If people refuse to believe that love is enough reason to allow gay marriage, then think of it this way-It's beneficial to the economy to have more people getting married thus creating a higher demand for everything in the associated markets from wedding dresses, to fine china from neimans that we really dont need but totally have to have on our registry.

  57. 57

I have to speak up here. I am a Black woman who voted No on 8; however, I want to defend the Black community just a tad. Black folks know gay people, there's a few in every family. My question to you and the gay community: What did the gay community do to reach out to the Black community in regards to Prop 8? The church is a big factor in most Black families; I am sure Blacks were told to vote Yes from the church. If Blacks only heard one side of Prop 8 then they most likely believed the "mis" information they received. Again, what did the gay community do to educate, inform, request the support of the Black community? I don't know one Black person who received a call from the phone banks, I don't know one Black person who received an informational flyer, I don't know one Black person who was contacted by No on 8 supporters. What did the gay community do to ensure that 69% of Blacks would not vote Yes?

  58. 58

She got married?!? Wasn't she on Ellen the other day saying how gays should get married and to let THEM have THEIR rights? Now she acknowledging she's part of THEIR group? Of all shows, Ellen, and she acts like she was an outside supporter!

  59. 59

I have been discriminated against at work and at church since Obama was elected. My fellow "Christians" are treating me like dirt or not treating me like anything at all. I'm being shunned and talked about because I choose to not do the same to people they all think I should be doing it to. It hurt my feelings really bad…to the point that I wasn't sleeping at night. But yesterday I decided, "Screw them!"…I know I am doing right and I have to stand by my convictions. And if they want to ostracize me for being TRULY CHRIST LIKE, then that's their problem. I'm going on with my life just the same.

  60. 60

And Yes I am saying that you can't assume because of the plight/history of Blacks in AMerica that they would automatically support No on 8. Most Blacks do not know Prop 8 to be about equality and justice; they know it to be a religious cause. I believe it was the responsibility of No on 8 supporters and gay community to reach out to the Black community to request their support in the fight toward equality and justice. It was their responsibility to frame Prop 8 as an unjust and discriminatory Proposition instead of a religious one- this was not done by the gay community or No on Prop 8 supports. God knows I did my part, but I am only one.

  61. 61

I would love to meet Wanda. She's a crazy nut like me.

  62. M&M'z says – reply to this

Gooooo Wanda!!!!!No one can make you laugh like Wanda…..great COMEDIAN…….nothing else matters……Luv her!!!

  63. 63

  64. 64

  65. 65

those city slickers are real slitty lickers

  66. 66

I think it's time we rethink who we shovel out titles to. Wanda Sykes was the hero of the day. SHE should be the queen or empress of something. Dana Elaine Owens ("Queen" Latifah) can hardly be called queen, when she is a shy secretive ashamed entity enclosed in secrets and hiding out her true self from the world.

  67. 67

Isn't she an eloquent little muff diver? Yeuchh!

  68. 68

Hmmm I always loved Wanda, never knew she was a lesbian. Now I like her even more, she is awesome and an inspiration to young black gays. I will support her even more

  69. 69

GO WANDA! I am a straight woman who fully and whole-heartedly supports gay rights and am 150% against Prop 8, which is INHUMANE. There, this is MY coming out.

Marriage is not such a sacred thing if most people get divorced, so why can't same-sex couples join as well? Most people don't even get married in religious ceremonies anymore, but rather civil. Live and let live!

  70. hjk says – reply to this

im a huge supporter for gay rights.. but i think its really silly when people compare gay discrimination to what black people went through…. gays werent slaves they were never lynched, they could never not vote, they were never segregated, the only thing they can't do is marry. and yes discrimination is discrimination but comparing the two belittles what blacks went though, and people should be smart enough NOT to do that…

  71. 71

It kills me the way African American have been blamed for supposedly "passing Prop 8". Do you, and others like you, not realize that African Americans do not make up 70% of all voters in California? And to people who are essentially saying that "because African Americans are black and should be all too familiar with discrimination, they should be the first to support gay rights," NO NO NO. African Americans are people first, they have the right to hold their own beliefs, keep their own religions, maintain their own faiths just as anyone else; or perhaps, has everyone forgotten this fact? In no way am I saying that passing Prop 8 was morally right, because I definitely don't think fundamental human rights should be voted on by people not affected by them, but people against Prop 8 need to respect the fact that people voted the way they did and now focus on improvement, NOT BASHING OTHER STIGMATIZED GROUPS.

  72. 72

Re: MarleyRai – Number 58, so you are saying that black people are an amorphous non-thinking mass that does not think independently, reason, or weigh facts or feelings.
They just wait around like sheep for the loudest talker with the most words (reasonable or not) to TELL them how to vote ?
You are really perpetuating some stereotypes. I hope this is not how B.O. got elected.
You do not need to defend me. Not even just a "tad".
I think on my own, and definitely do not sit around waiting for someone to tell me how to vote.

  73. 73

  74. 74

I AM a black man and I would NEVER vote in favor of legalizing the chi-chi man! No amount of disorderly conduct and unrest will change my mind either; God clearly states being gay is a sin and no amount of coercion will make any difference! We are not called to be perfect but ARE called to be faithful, and being a batty-boy is against the rules.

  75. 75

Re: cryscket – Number 60, voting for Barack and being Christ-like are tow entirely different things. Don't mix government and church. Maybe your inability to make the distinction of religion and government has got people looking at you strangely for your simple-mindedness. It may have nothing to do with your vote at all.
By the way, were you a crazy militant Obama supporter who felt the need to broadcast to the world that there was only one right way to vote, and that was YOUR way ? That would be my guess. And that would explain why people have stepped away from you. You alienated them yourself. It's not all about "poor you".

  76. 76

Wow, she's gay? Next you'll tell me there's no Easter Bunny.

  77. 77

I knew there was something, different, about her. Shes kinda butchy.

  78. 78

    I never knew.

    LOve you Wanda

  79. 79

    I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!I knew it!

  80. 80

I saw her at a lesbian club a few years back, known this for a while

  81. 81

I'm a fan of Wanda Sykes and now after this, I am a HUGE fan. There's a serious side to her as well as being extremely funny. Great speak Wanda Sykes!

  82. 82

Yeah…there was a "vibe" years ago.

  83. 83

I've always liked Wanda; I thought she was hilarious on the Downer Channel(does anyone remember that show?). I remember hearing whispers she was gay even before. She does good voice-overs for kids' animated characters as well.

  84. 84

God bless her and her wife, more carpet munchers need to step up to the plate, huh? Come on Hillary, Oprah and Queen Lati.

  85. 85

you can totally here me screaming hahahahaha i love this thanks for putting this up perez we had a lot of fun yesterday supporting for you all in california! and i got to meet wanda sykes!!!!! :D

  86. 86

I love wanda sykes, but if she was so "proud to be gay", why did she wait so long to come out of the closet? I was shocked when I read this, I never would've guessed.

  87. 87

Thanks for the video Perez. I'm very proud of Wanda for coming to the defense of EQUAL RIGHTS for all. I'm equally as proud to stand next to her as a gay, coloured person.

With that said, I do not agree with the following statement by you, Perez:

If people of color saw more gay and lesbian examples in the media - yes, Queen Latifah, we're talking to you.

It is absolutely disconcerting that gay people like you feel the need to pull other gays out of the closet. You of all people know the difficulties one faces when they choose to come out. So, why are you forcing her to. It's none of your business. She (and countless others) will, if and when she's ready to and will not be forced out because you have an agenda.

It's funny, you're fighting for rights, yet you choose not to exercise the rights of an individuals privacy.

  88. 88

Talking about blacks just because you whites are the freaks of the world, fucking cats, dogs, horses, snakes does not mean people have to support that. Being Gay is a choice either you choose to have sex with another man or another women that up to you. I wouldn't care if Wanda, Queen, Eddie came out gay. I want to become a grandparent. If we listen to you dumb fucks the world would end. Procreation would stop no more children in the world, marriage as we know it would be over and you stupid fucks would contribute to ending life as we know it. Being Gay is up to you, too bad you can't get married!! Yes on Prop 8!!!

  89. 89

Perez babe A LOT of people ( not just people of color) that voted for prop 8 thought they were voting against it. Something about the wording… I forget all the details, but there was a large discussion on Michael Basden's radio show about it. There are more people of color against prop 8 than you think.

  90. 90

How great is that. Keep um coming!!!

  91. 91

Now I'm so glad prop 8 didn't pass. Perez is preaching hate, racially divide, trying to shove gays down or throats and it's not going to work. Hahahaha that's why you can't marry another man Perez!!!

  92. 92

Re: kennnnn – Comments like this are ignorant. You cannot group an entire race as a whole. Just because they didn't vote the way you wanted doesn't make them ignorant.

  93. 93

    go wanda!!

  94. 94

Re: poopstain – Hey #33 thats too funny!! hahahaha…I hope all queer marriage is banned in the USA FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's disgusting and immoral. You'll answer to GOD on judgement day. He tells you it is SIN..do you think he's just kidding or lying about that????? Stupid queers!!….tsk…….

  95. 95

I am surprised that Perez is still using flawed statistics that has been proven to show that it is NOT an actual representation of the total black electorate. Please go to Nate Silver's website. Blacks make up 6% of the total electorate and many did not even vote on the measure.

If we want to finger point,Why don't Perez talk about the percentage of latinos who voted YES ON 8? Latinos make up a larger percentage of the electorate than blacks.

The truth of the matter is that NEITHER blacks, latinos or asians were the main reason for the passage of PROP8 and blaming only one very, very small group of people ( blacks) is not only wrong but it does absolutely nothing for the cause of Gay Rights.

  96. 96

I think that it is wrong that california being one of the most progressive states in this country passed prop 8. I really believe the only reason it passed was because the people for prop 8 had a lot of money, and fed off peoples misunderstandings and fears. Bringing children into this was ruthless, and people's primary instinct is to protect their children. I have a two year old son and I voted no on 8 because I want him to grow up in a country where everyone is equal.

  97. 97

Re: ChihuahuaBama – WHAT?….let me guess; no Santa Claus, either? just as long as they don't start telling us the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus are GAY lovers too! They'll be having them soon join their parade and the Santa Claus parade will have him strutting around in leather chaps with his ass hanging out,and carrying a rainbow flag! ha ha

  98. 98

good for her although i had my suspicions.

  99. 99

I Love Wanda! I had absolutely no idea she was a lesbian.

  100. 100

Re: Bumbo Klaat – It's funny that your name is a Jamaican expletive. Anyway. What God are we speaking of here? Have you spoken to god personally? Are you aware that Christianity is a PAGAN religion that is 98% plagiarized from the ancient Egyptian myths? You sound ignorant.
