They grew up in the same families and had the same parents. If becoming a member of the most despised minority on the face of the earth is not a choice, then homos are born that way. If they are born that way then discrimination is immoral, just as it is for any other minority. People say homos should settle for Civil Unions, but that leaves out a whole lot of rights and it's state by state, instead of marriage with is recognized everywhere. While I believe that same-sex couples should be able to join in civil unions, since this is a share of state and federal rights like adoption, insurance, and other legal issues, its hard for me to say I'm for "Gay Marriage". And to be honest the reason is something Perez already brought up.
He said, and I quote, "Also, have you heard of the separation of church and state????" Marriage started as a religious institution. This is why so many people, whether religious or not, want some from of minister at their wedding. Its why we pray and bless the couple at the wedding. Its also the reason that so many conservatives, something I am sometimes accused of, are so upset about the idea of gay marriage. Most really don't want to deny rights to gay men and women, they want to preserve something they are passionate about.
While some people may say that the separation of church and state was established so that the church could not influence the state. What they are forgetting is that they were separated for the opposite reason as well. The founding fathers didn't want the state trying to use or change religion, something that had happened in England when Henry VII denounced the Pope and helped from the Anglican Church (also know as the Church of England). The idea was established so that the two very different institutions could act independently.
Most people would agree that it would be wrong for the government to tell someone what to believe. Well that is how many conservatives feel. The Church as a whole has always stated that MARRIAGE is between a man and woman. But many have said that civil unions are perfectly acceptable. So by trying to change what they believe without considering their faith or belief set. Christian conservatives do see this issue as oppressive. But they see it as their belief are being repressed.
I realize this was long and I apologize but I had to say it. We don't hate you, we just wish their was a compromise. Besides with 50%+ marriages ending in divorce, is that really something you want to be a part of? jk
