Detroit's auto CEOs can suck it hard.

So the CEOs of Ford (Alan Mulally), Chrysler (Robert Nardelli) and GM (Rick Wagoner ) were in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday begging the government (i.e. YOU, cuz it's the tax money you've paid) for billions of dollars because their businesses have gone to shit.
Sounds like there was quite a bit of histrionics from the trio. They claimed that they'll likely go out of business without a bailout.
Anyway, this didn't stop the CEOs from traveling in private, company owned, luxurious jets to get to D.C.
First class wasn't good enough????

ABC News reports that Wagoner's private jet trip to Washington cost the ailing GM an estimated $20,000 roundtrip.
In comparison, seats on Northwest Airlines flight 2364 from Detroit to Washington were going online for $288 coach and $837 first class.
WTF?
Couldn't the 3 have 'planepooled' at least? They were going to the same place!
Tom Schatz, President of Citizens Against Government Waste said, "This is a slap in the face of taxpayers. To come to Washington on a corporate jet, and asking for a hand out is outrageous… It appears that the senior management of the automakers simply don't get it."

The Ford CEO told Congress that he's cut expenses, laid-off workers and closed 17 plants.
But, get this.
Ford continues to operate a fleet of eight private jets for its executives!!!!
The ABC report goes on to say that on Tuesday, one jet was taking Ford honchos to Los Angeles, another on a trip to Nebraska.
John McElroy of the TV show, Autoline Detroit said, "Now's not the time to do that sort of thing. Now's the time to be humble and show that you're sharing equally in the sacrifice."
When us regular folks are short on cash we sell things to make ends meet right?
GM has 8 luxury jets in its fleet and apparently does NOT plan on selling any of them in this time of 'crisis'. Note, the jet their CEO used to get to DC cost the company $36 million.
President-Elect Obama has advocated for a bailout of the U.S. car companies.
We hope any auto bailout that the soon-to-be President stamps with his seal of approval incorporates some sort of oversight re. executive 'privileges'.
It's infuriating to think that execs could live lavishly on the backs of tax payers, most of whom are struggling to make ends meet!

While the behavior of the executives is wrong and disturbing, please remember that there are tens of thousands of lower and middle class workers in the Midwest who are effected by the tanking auto industry, including two of my brothers (both laid off, temporarily) and my father who worked for forty years and lost his retirement benefits. Anything we can do to save them, albeit it questionable, is worth it in my book. Besides, if the auto industry goes under we are looking at over 290 billion dollars in litigation fees for bankruptcy, charged to the taxpayer as well.

I watched this on t.v. this morning. It is outrageous. There are some people in this country that do not make $20,000 a month. This is such a gluttonous waste of money. I hope they are not bailed out. They do not deserve it. They need to go bankrupt and start over. I cannot believe they would have the balls to waste all that money while asking for handouts. I personally do not want my money going to help out these assholes. Look what happened with AIG and Lehman when they were given handouts within days they were partying it up with our money at lavish resorts. Enough is enough of this shit!

I live in the Detroit area, you cannot believe how many people are out of work here or are facing losing their jobs, some of them are my own family members. These CEOs are disgusting, there is NO EXCUSE for this! The auto workers should just walk the fuck out.
I totally agree some sort of reform needs to take place; it sickens me that these higher-ups are burning cash like it's nothing. However, were the big 3 to go bankrupt, that would mean 1 in 3 Detroiters are unemployed. We've already got the highest unemployment rate in the nation. And you're right, it does go beyond Michigan-it's not just the big three–it's all the suppliers, etc.

I heard about this theory…..instead of bailing out the companies, bail out the general public. Give them a large amount of money….with it people can pay their cars, mortgages, bills or just plain shop and it will feed the companies that are asking for help but still help the general public. Why give it to the big companies when people still won't be able to afford to buy their product so in no time they will be suffering again!
American car companys suck and are controlled by unions. Their workers (who work on production lines) make around 75k/year and retire at age 55 with a HUGE pension and health benefits for the rest of their lives. NO ONE RETIRES THAT EARLY ANYMORE, that's just not the way it is anyone. If you can work, you WORK. That's why these companies are in the shitter. DO NOT BAIL THEM OUT! The same thing will just happen 5 years from now and it won't solve anything.

It can't be too hard to examine an engine and see why it is that Japanese made cars run longer and have less problems. We have been buying these horrible vehicles for years. I HOPE they go under. They are going to anyway if they don't change their ways. To all of you out there who think a lot of Americans are going to lose their jobs… UMMMM If they keep their acts up, they will eventually anyway AND will have wasted whatever money will be alloted in this bailout.

IF the government bails out anyone, it should be the natural resources that are in jeopardy!
The lumber industry, paper industry, mining etc should be the ones who get bailed out or helped out!

Isn't America a capitalist society? Why are the taxpayers having to bail all these companies out? I thought capitalism was kind of like survival of the fittest? My husband has his own business and there are times we can't pay all the bills each month but we're not asking for a bailout…if your company can't make it then you need to change your practices. The automaker's situation is unsupportable. The Detroit auto industry has been dead and gone for years and doesn't even know it! Paulson has suggested that if any aide goes to these companies, it be for the purpose of making these companies into manufacturers of fuel-efficient cars, and Obama supports this position, too. Let's get things on track in this nation people - there's no reason we should be driving these gas guzzlers, or have them out in the marketplace, when there's plenty of demand for fuel-efficient cars!
Although I do not agree with what the CEO's are doing, I think they still need the bail out. My dad works for a GM dealership and the dealership is struggling when they used to be the best in the Chicago area. More than a million people are likely to lose their jobs because of this. My dad and people working with him did not get their commission checks last month and probably won't get them for a while. The commission checks are how most of these people live. It's really upsetting.
Bankruptcy is the only thing that will fix these companies. our Savior Barak better not give them one red cent of my money. I feel bad for the families who will be adversly affected, but that is part of life. Just because they go broke doesn't mean they will go away, it just means they will be owned by someone else. Perhaps someone who knows how to run a company

I don't think that the actions of CEO's should mean that hundreds of thousands of people should lose their jobs…there is more at stake here than just some ass hole CEOs and their privleges. I agree that they should be more frugal and possibly be let go, but just because they took a fancy plane to Washington does that mean that everyone who works for the company should suffer? There has to be a way to save jobs AND create some change in the industry. Just sayin.

I, myself am in the automotive industry, but do not deal in domestic vehicles… here is how I feel about the bailout as someone who is close to the problem…
The Big 3's problem is a result of bad oversight, overproduction and unions. Would I like to see them sink? Yes, I do. And I think that they deserve to. This country WAS built in the belief that you are to pull YOUSELF up by your bootstraps when times are tough. The Big 3 over the years has made plenty of money of the American people but unfortunately has squandered it and now they will become bankrupt.
The fact that they all took seperate jets to DC just shows the disregard for public opinion and they should be punished for bad decisions such as this.
But…. if the big 3 go down, MILLIONS OF BLUE COLLAR AMERICANS WILL LOSE THEIR JOBS. Not 10's of thousands, BUT MILLIONS. The finger should absolutely be pointed at executives, but hey…. they won't be the ones who suffer, the regular hard working Americans who have 2 or 3 mouths to feed at home will be the ones who lose their jobs and will not be able to find work due to the failing economy. Sad, but true.

I used to work for Home Depot which Bob Nardelli used to be CEO of. After he ran the company down and the board finally kicked him out… he got more than a $265million severance package. HE'S A TOOL.

You do realize most of their problems stem from the fact that the big 3 are unionized and foreign automakers are not? It's hard to be profitable when they're paying out more pensions than the current number of employees.
While they still need to be faulted for making an inferior line of products, if you want them destroyed then you destroy unions that have given us the 8 hour work day, abolished child labor, and overall protect workers. And then when they're destroyed the other American industries that rely on American can manufacturers (steel mills etc) will also die. This is bigger than jets. Get some fucking context please.

This is ridiculous. I actually wanted them to get bailed out but after reading this…not so much. But alas, there are millions of jobs at stake. Millions of people who work their way in the world, to put food on the table for their children and keep a roof over their families head. If there was only a way to punish the CEO's and have the working class keep their jobs at the auto factories…
