Ben Affleck Do-Gooding in Congo, Africa
Starting today, Thursday, Oscar winner Ben Affleck will be visiting refugee camps in war-torn eastern Congo, where at least 250,000 people have been displaced by recent fighting.
Violet's daddy is hoping to bring more attention to the country and is advocating for more aid in the region.
This is Ben's 4th trip to Congo since 2007.
He's also made a documentary about the dire situation in the country.
"I'm really glad that more people are paying more attention to (Congo) now but I'm really saddened that it's taken this uptick in violence to make that happen," says the actor. "My hope in being here is primarily to bring attention to the fact that there's a real lack of (aid agencies) here, a real lack of money going to these folks."
Affleck told reporters that he first became interested in Congo a few years ago, when Hollywood's attentions began to focus on Darfur.
"I thought a lot of people are advocating on Darfur. I'd just be a very small log on a big fire. I started getting interested in Congo and I thought, this is a place where I can have a really big impact" he said.
After doing more research on Africa, he was shocked to learn about Congo's four-year war, during which an estimated 5 million people died.
So sad.

This is awesome! More people need to know about the situation in Congo. They also need to know that it's a major conservation disaster! Animals and the environment are being destroyed with the people. Little things like cutting off charcoal use by the refugees and replacing it with cheaper more durable fuels like briquettes make a huge difference!

Families and children in America are suffering. Home foreclosures are at an all time high, and people cannot afford food and gas….yet those with money to help those in need in AMERICA are still going to FOREIGN countries where the situations will NEVER change. Ben, go eff yourself. We'll just see if you fall on down and out times if the people in Congo offer YOU any HELP.
The very sad reality of this situation is that aid agencies have been trying to help impoverished African countries for decades and decades. Post-colonial Africa is a very messy place ruled by dictators of the most brutal kind, and the fact of the matter is that no matter how much money we throw at the problem, nothing will change unless fundamental aspects of these countries are changed: education (particularly sex education), restructuring of economies, the overthrow of one-rule parties, and entry into the global marketplace. Sending a bowl of rice to starving children on TV may work for today, but no one is learning how to fish so they can feed themselves, so to speak. And unfortunately, money sent over in aid often ends up in the hands of dictators and warlords to purchase manpower and weapons to extend their rule. China and certain South American countries are examples of what should be happening in Africa; entry into the global market and education leads to a higher standard of living which cause a cascading effect throughout society. We need to get a better understanding of the problem instead of breaking out the checkbooks.
I saw Ben Affleck on Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect recently. He had diarrhea of the mouth and seemed like a big douche. Nice, but douche-y just the same. Just my opinion.
