I love the idea of moving Sundance to elsewhere. But … New Mexico? Wouldn't Connecticut be more of an obvious choice since they just legalized gay marriage. Or what about San Francisco?

Perez, you should do some research before you post stuff like this on here. As a resident of Park City, Utah, I think you might find it important that 82% of all businesses that do business with Sundance (hotels, restaurants, bars, production companies, and such) are owned by NON-Mormons. Why should people take their frustrations out on these people? It is not only the business that would suffer, but also their employees and their families.
I am all for equal rights and in NO way support what the Mormons have done, but don't take it out on the individual and their families that work here in Utah.
Besides you can't move Sundance, because it would no longer be Sundance. Maybe you should get off your fat ass and come check it out. Not everything in Utah is Mormon or even affiliated with the Mormons.

I also cringe when some gay people are taking this to extremes by making people even more uncomfortable with the gay life style. Forinstance, by charging into peoples places of worship, scaring old people and banning places of businesses. Making people hate you and your lifestyle isn't the answer to get you change. Weren't you the one that quoted Martin Luther King. He got the word out in peaceful means and by showing people that black people aren't different then them. Confrontation only causes hatred. You talk about hate and how the mormons targeted you. What the hell do you think you are doing to the Mormons? Just because people voted Yes on 8 doesn't mean that they are anti-gay. The only statistics the gay community has on who voted how was from exit polls. Those are inaccurate. Riverside county which has the largest gay population in CA per capita because of Palm Springs only voted 35% for NO on 8. So what is up with that?
Anywhere but Utah, I disagree that it has to be Taos, New Mexico. It doesn't have to have a ski area just to resemble Park City. San Francisco would be a great option or Palm Springs.
And, seriously, how do you know that religion was the influencing factor of the MAJORITY to vote YES? I was born and raised catholic, but do not practice. I do not let my religious upbringing sway my views.
as a mormon, hopefully one of the "fair-minded" mormons mentioned in the article…i would like to say that i am deeply ashamed of how the Church leadership has behaved in regards to Proposition 8. The Church is supposed to remain officially neutral on any political issue, and they did not remain true to this tenet. What is so unfortunate is that the teachings of our church emphasize that each and every one of us are children of our Heavenly Father, beloved and cherished by him. It is he who sent us here and he wants us to be happy. Taing away the right of a loving and committed couple to marry is at odds with our core beliefs. LOVE!

The Sundance Film Festival was founded by Robert Redford (who is neither Mormon or gay) and named after his home in Park City, Utah. The Sundance Film Festival has nothing to do with Mormons except that both have homes in Utah.

Good for the Mormons on rounding up their members and taking a stance on what they believe. - If the gay population cared that much, they should have done the same. Last time I looked, the gay population is far greater than Mormon membership. You could have raised just as mush money, put just as many people on the streets, and called just as many households. Sundance is in Summit County (utah) and they voted for Barack O. It is a liberal town. Very liberal. Sundance isn't putting money in the pockets of the mormons by coming to Utah.. You are hurting liberal mom and pop shops who depend on Sundance for their livlihood. Besides, where would you have it California who voted to ban gay marriage in the first place??? Re: evelynne – No Evelyn, the church is not supposed to stay neutral on political issues. The church stays neutral on political candidates; there is a difference. Churches can speak out on social issues like Prop 8 all they want without losing their tax exempt status. It's when a church supports a candidate like Obama that they are at risk of losing their tax exempt status - except of course if you are a black church, then the IRS won't touch you. Now if you are unhappy with the church leadership on the issue, then perhaps your testimony is not what it should be.
I seriously doubt every person in Utah is a Mormon nor does every Mormon object to gay marriage. Why would they move Sundance from utah…because the people of California voted Yes to Prop 8?? Maybe you should have been going door to door swinging your rainbow flag and making a statement before it was voted on, guess you didn't make enough effort. It's held where it is because it's Redford's baby, and that's where he lives. It's location makes it easier for Redford to commute to and organize the events in the many months prior to and during the festival. It was getting full of be-seens and sycophants with no actual reason for being there anyway, so if some boycott due to a separate agenda, the principals who care about the festival and have films there will be able to be more focused on the festival's main mission. It's OK to fight for your rights, but it's not right to dump on someone else's. Boycott the state (or not), although there are a lot of non-Mormons in residence, but don't boycott Redford's wonderful, philanthropic film festival which promotes independent film and the industry that earned him such a good living. This effort is somehow off point, and I think a better statement could be made in a better way somehow.

If homosexuals don't slam their homosexuality down people's throats, and voice out about their concerns, they would have no rights. They would be hidden in a corner and suffer. I live in Utah. I am sick of everyone talking about the boycott. I do not promote hate, I thing everyone has rights that should be respected, and I love all my gay friends and attend their weddings and receptions. On that note, how about instead of boycotting, we work for CHANGE?!? Maybe instead of moving or boycotting Sundance, all the gays should show up, support it, and protest the LDS CHURCH while they are in town. Don't punish all of us based on the actions of a few– isn't that the message you are upset about in the first place?
1. If you want to get at the Mormons then why not make Sundance this year a big gay classy gathering in Park City and stuff what they hate right in their face? Have a protest party in their backyard. Get entertainers, speakers, sponsorship… etc. Draw positive attention to your cause without having a temper tantrum. The Mormon's don't care if Sundance isn't there because of the gays—that doesn't hurt them.
2. Robert Redford, who backs the festival, is probably the most liberal person in Hollywood.
Also, telling people not to support Sundance doesn't help promote gay equality. It disrespects and hurts the artistic community and the struggling, dedicated filmmakers who have put their heart & soul into making something they've believed in for a very long time. So you see, you are hurting creative artists and villifying gays by making them responsible. Mormons may live in the state of Utah, but they barely make up the population of Park City… sheesh. A film festival doesn't benefit them and it's a ridiculous notion to think so. Sundance isn't going to move. Robert Redford OWNs Sundance Ski Resort which is part of the reason why it is there. Besides, things are already set in place for it to go on this year. I doubt Redford would want to move it elsewhere. He'd lose business. Utah has some of the best snow in the country.
