Canada, for one, is willing to treat the oft-discriminated big boys and gals like regular folks.
Just yesterday, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that obese people will have the right to use two seats for the price of one on all flights within Canada.
And the decision will stay!
The court declined to even hear an appeal by the Canadian Transportation Agency.
The Canadian airlines had originally lost an appeal, launched by Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz and WestJet, back in May at the Federal Court of Appeal.
The airlines were seeking to get a new appeal with the Supreme Court but they got denied.
Instead, it was ruled that people who are "functionally disabled by obesity" deserve to have two seats for the price of one fare.
Wonder if the U.S. will do the same?

I'm Canadian and I think this is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Although, as a person who got stuck sitting next to a huge fatting from BC to Toronto, I'll say that it'd be nice not to have huge flobby folds flopping all over my arm for five hours.

since the costs associated with flying are correlated with weight, i think the airlines should consider charging passengers by the total weight of their bodies and the items they want to check in and take on board. why should i, a normal weight person, have to pay $25 to check a bag, when the tubby in the seat next to me not only takes up two seats but, even without luggage, weighs more than me and all my things?

Being fat was the worst feeling in the world.
Obesity can also be caused by many diseases and their treatments, not just by overeating. Have some common decency and respect for others and don't judge. Yes, there are those who overeat but there are also those who are on steroids to keep them from rejecting organ transplants or for asthma and a multitude of other meds that cause excessive weight gain. No one should suffer the humiliation of being treated differently for the way they look, regardless of the reason.
c'mon…im not trying to be mean…..my family is from Ohio (and kentucky, and tenn….) and they are all….well……big…..
but doesnt it suck sooooo hard when you are stuck on an airplane with someone who take up their seat and half of yours??????

Re: johnde – Totally agree. I have had to sit next to 2 obese people on a 12 hour flight and I will tell you, it was COMPLETELY unfair to me, someone who had also paid, to have no comfort. Imagine sitting in the already small coach seat on a plane, then have someone's arm pretty much take up 4" of your seat, not to mention literal body fat hanging over the armrest and into your seat…..for 12 hours…and believe me, I did not want to embarrass them but I deserved a new seat. And and let's not forget that her coat was also hanging on top of me! She SHOULD have paid for my seat and I should have gotten a new seat…if that ever happens again, I will not be nice, sorry, but it's unfair.
That is completely ridiculous. Of the people that are obese a very very small amount of them are obese due to an actual physical problem such as something wrong with their thyroid. The rest of obese people are lazy, don't like to excersize and eat poorly. Being overweight has become acceptable and overweight women are now seen as """"curvy"""". If there are people in this world who are so overweight they need two seats, they should PAY for that seat THEY USE because I stay healthy and yet if I have something that means i need another seat, I have to pay for that seat. I'm not saying lets all hate the obese people but we need to realise that probably 98% of obese people got their by their own means and that having it OK for them not to pay for that seat means its OK to be obese and means that we will treat it differently and like a disability when it is not the same.
These will just make more people believe its OK to be obese, now they're know they can take up two seats and take advantage of that. And what about the poor person who misses their flight, PERHAPS because an obese individual is taking up an extra seat, that isn't fair is it?. Sure that may be rare, but it could happen!
So then why do I have to pay for my 2 year old… maybe half the time my kid will sit on my lap — maybe the other part, I should just get the courtesy of getting the seat next to me free.
Maybe my husband and I should tie our legs together 3-legged race style and say we're fused and then you have to give us 2 seats for the price of 1.
Trying to act like obesity is a disability and beyond the control of obese people is the worst move that has ever been made towards the health of humanity. I've been fat and I've been not fat and believe me, when I've been fat it was because I ate crap and sat around all day.
What's next? A lawsuit to say that even though bigger clothing uses more material, it's discriminatory to charge more for the extended sizes? Are you going to start suing amusement parks that have rides with weight limits saying they better let you on anyway and when you break the damn thing and die are you gonna sue for that too?
This is a joke. It may not be easy and effortless to be a size 0-8 but you can be up to a size 20 or for a man a 44 inch waist by eating crap and not exercising and still fit in those seats… to get big enough to fit in those chairs — you are eating way beyond reason and you're not even trying to stop yourself….

They make me pay extra if I have 'overweight' baggage.. so If my shopping filled bags cost ME more to fly because of the extra weight, they should have to pay for 2 seats because they are utilizing the same weight as 2 passengers! They should have a check when you buy the tickets saying, do you weigh more than (blahblah) And if they do they are FORCED to book and pay for 2 seats.
And if they don't like it, they should go on a fucking diet, i got a bit chubby when I was 20 eating a muffin for breakfast slacking off all exercise and realised I needed to go for a bloody walk and eat some salads.
You always see fat people eating shitty food as well, this sorta thing pisses me off.
Fat people that feel discriminated against can STFU you act like you have a disability, like MS and I find it insulting to people with real disabilities that have no cure and you get 2 seats for your self imposed disability which you can easily cure by not being such a greedy lazy person. I am so tired of hearing excuse after excuse for obesity. My thyroid, my this, my DNA. When you actually do the research, there is hardly anything that really makes you THAT obese. There is Prader willi and a few other things… and even Prader willi people work to control their issues as best they are able. Look up thyroid conditions - you're talking about less than 10 pounds of possible impact…
I used to work for a company that had health insurance that started offering gastric bypass. It became the trendy thing to do. I know at least 11 people who had it done. We had a full service cafeteria at our site and I would see them get a huge plate of food for breakfast along with a pastry and a regular soda. Then I would see them sit at their desks munching on candy and more soda. Then at break they'd grab a burrito or two — then at lunch… full meal all over again complete with a dessert and a soda…. but you should have heard them whine and complain about how they had no option but the surgery — they'd tried everything. One of them bit another co-workers head off when she suggested that rather than do that dangerous surgery, why not try going into the company provided gym and join weight watchers… girl got told off — as the girl sitting there with an overflowing plate swore up and down that she was a victim of her DNA…
and 5 years later, only 1 of those people HAS NOT gained a great deal of their weight back… because as soon as their stomachs could handle it, they went right back to their old eating habits… genetic my ass

If you look back through history, rarely were people fat, let alone obese. Now all these people sit on their asses and stuffs their faces all day and then whine as to how hard it is to be fat. I don't agree with this ruling and hope our country doesn't follow Canada's decision. It's not my problem that you can't fit in one seat. It's bad enough when someone's fat spills over into my area.

I live in Canada. I think this is a joke! It is like, the government pushes healthy eating, but by giving an obese individual a 2/1 seat it seems like they are OK'ing the problem of obesity. Obesity causes heart disease, lethargy, and a cost to our medical system. Get on a treadmill and stop making excuses. People need to get more active and the gov't should not be condoning it.

I think this is good. It's not encouraging them too be fat it's just…making it easier to sit somewhere. People complain about fat people when they fly and how it's uncomfortable to sit next too them…well this benefits the skinnies too! More space for everyone!

It's an excuse and not scientifically proven or sound that most people who are overweight are so due to their genetic makeup.
It's normally and almost always due to their eating habits. What they put "in" versus what they put "out". Eating disorders appear in every form, and overweight and obesity fall under this classification. Sure, psychological issues come to hand also and this leads to overeating and depression cycles etc; however the underlying cause for overweight and obesity IS:

What a shame that that was the decision. It's not a disease…..it's a lack of self control. Sure there might be some factors that don't make it easy to lose weight (ie: underactive thyroid) but for the most part, people are fat because of what they eat and lack of exercise. If people changed their eating habits, cut out the fat and sugar, reduced portion sizes and got out and walked at least three times a week for say, half an hour, then the poundage would come off. Too much starches, too much pop, too many carbs not enough fruits and veggies, whole grains and water = tubby. I know because I've been there. And once I did change my habits, then the weight started to come off and rather quickly. It's not about dieting, it's lifestyle changes.

I fly all the time and the seats are getting smaller and I have not gained a dime in 10 years. Obesity for woman on flights is a size 14 and over.

There is a small percentage of people that are obese because of genetics and they can't help it, however a lot of fat/obese people are fat/obese because they eat themselves with little to no excercise. These people bitch and moan and blame society and the media. These people want a fast approach to weight lose that would make them look skinny scrany instead of fit and healthy. Fat/Obese people it takes a lot of hard work, dedication and discipline to have a healthy and fit body, and depending on your weight and size it may take years to get down to the ideal healthy weight.
