A Meteor Hits Canada!

Did a meteor really hit Canada Thursday afternoon at about 5:30pm???

Many have reported and captured footage of a fireball shooting across the sky along with hearing a loud "bang" in Western Canada.

Officials say the meteor might not have actually touched ground.

Space educator Randy Atwood said, "There's a very good chance it was what we call a bull's eye, which is a meteorite crossing the sky at extremely quick velocity — very, very fast — and as it hits the atmosphere at about 400,000 feet, traveling at about 60 kilometres per second, this is the incredible light show that it creates."

He added that the meteor was probably no bigger than a grapefruit! And it might have actually broken down into smaller pieces before hitting the ground or burning up before touching land.

Atwood added, "It was a beautiful show and some people might have thought it was just over the hill, and that it was the size of a house."

Thankfully all of our Perezcious readers in Canada are safe.

      It was cool, if you want to see a better video of it, google "global news edmonton" and there is an awesome video shot by a camera in a cop car and it got the best view of it…its beautiful!!!

      yups, i saw it, and actually thought it was a plane in flames. sorry i wasn't taking pictures at the time. it was scary! people are still takling about it today. the sky really lit up and it was dark at the time. whoa, freaky.

      I saw that footage early this morning on my local news.. it was from a security camera out in a parking lot.

      I think that they are saying that the meteor landed somewhere between melfort saskatchewan and edmonton alberta, that's a pretty large distance, but definitely somewhere within central saskatchewan and alberta. It probably hit right on the border near lloydminister.

      Umm i'm pretty sure it DID hit the ground, because some guys said that they were working on an oil rig just north of where I live in Canada and um yeah, they saw it actually BOUNCE. and it was NOT the size of a grapefruit it was like HUGE

      UMMM DUH!! If it hit and was bigger then a grapefruit it would have left a pretty large impact crater that would have been found by now and would be all over the news….plus meteors dont BOUNCE….smoke another one man!!

      I live in a town called Lloydminster, on the border of Saskatchewan and Alberta, and when the meteor went over us, our houses shook about a minute after. It was unbelievable. The light was so bright it was like daytime. Incredible, Once in a lifetime chance to see and it was awesome!!

      Ya, it was absolutely wicked - I was lucky enough to see it! I was out driving to my moms place in the country and it went zipping across the sky to my left, I only saw it for about a half second. But in that amount of time, it lit up 3 times in succession, very quickly, the brightest green - honestly, it was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in my entire life!!
      And it's ALL over the news today… people were in a frenzy over it yesterday, trying to get in touch with the news and radio stations… lol
      Very very cool!

      I was driving towards Beaumont, Alberta at the time, which is only about 10 minutes outside of Edmonton. From my perspective, it looked like it landed somewhere around Beaumont…
      I can't wait till some farmer discovers it!

      Evidently, scientists are looking for fragments near Manitou Lake, which is around 100km (about 60miles) south of Lloydminister.
      I think practically everyone who witnessed the meteor believed it to be really close.

      I was the one who reported this to perez right after it flew over Edmonton yesterday so I was FIRST!!! haha And I seen it happen. It was actually kind of scarey because you seen this fireball coming down and what do you think but of "armageddon". It could be seen all across Canada.

      I think it was the bag that the female astronaut dropped in space a few days ago.

      CBC: "Astronauts working on the International Space Station have lost a tool bag.

      I live in Alberta, about 4 hours North from Edmonton and when I saw this meteor, it almost caused an accident on the highway. It was pretty amazing to see!!
