Broadway Is A Graveyard

2008 will go down in history as one of the worst years in Broadway history.

Yet ANOTHER show is closing!

On Sunday, Mel Brook's Young Frankenstein announced that it would be playing its final performance ever on January 4th.

Hey, theater geeks! Here's a question we'd LOVE answered.

Has there ever been a year with more Broadway show closings than this one?????

    12. 12

      NO FOSSE NO BROADWAY!!!

    13. 13

1935 was the worst year for broadway….only 10 shows opened and not one show made a profit…Look at all the shows that are currently closing, they have all had disparaging sales for a while. It is sad that they all close at once; but, there are more on the way and there are still profitable shows out there.

    20. 20

      is clayfag still on b-way?

    21. 21

Broadway is fun but way too expensive. Dinner and decent tickets for two typically costs $300-400!! Who can afford that these days?

    22. 22

Re: BBD is stuffin' your turkey – can you stuff me? i'll take whatever you are offering.

Your glee at the expense of other performers' hardships/cancellations/closings borders on sociopathic.

You are a celebrity blogger. What have YOU done that is all that fantastic. Have YOU won an Oscar, been on an extraordinarily popular sitcom, won a Tony, a grammy - anything to speak of? Karma is a bit**. I would rein back my giddiness at other's misfortunes.

    27. 27

Are they really shuttin down the street? Why cant I reply to people

    28. 28

Re: _Alice_ – Pandagurl HATES me! She seeks out my posts to comment with things like I should die and my kid should die and all that.

    29. 29

I went to see that show, it was awesome!
      RIP Young Frankenstein…its sad.

    30. 30

:-( It's sad. It all started with Legally Blonde. This is crazy. I think the last time this many shows closed was back near the depression. But I have hope, There are alot of new shows coming. 9 to 5 for one which I think will be the next big hit.

    31. 31

ok, the other ones closed because of the economy. this one closed cuz it fucking sucked. and i saw it with the original cast, too. give up, mel brooks! the producers was a fluke!

    32. 32

Re: Melissa is always right HAS FANS – gimme an M….gimme an E…..gimme an L………….mamajud hearts u!

    33. 33

9-11? Weren't there a lot of closings then? In any case, I really don't lose sleep over it.

    34. 34

as a "theatre geek" i would like to say that the reason shows are closing is because no one can justify spending the ridiculous prices for broadway tickets. i wonder, perez, is the same thing happening on London's west end? theatre is my passion, but i refuse to spend that kind of money.

theatre should be for the masses!!!!!!

    35. Sho says – reply to this

      35

It looked like crap. No wonder it failed!!!!

    36. 36

Tickets just arent selling. You have to pay 100 bucks for front mezzanine sections, so if you're taking the whole family to see Mary Poppins and you want them to actually see the stage you could be paying from 4 to 5 hundred on tickets alone, never mind the gift shop, or dinner, or transportation, but its still hell to get.
Besides i'm not suprised about Young Frankenstein. Mel Brooks made sure that the tickets to the show were super jacked up so scalpers wouldnt buy them and sell them.
When a tourist comes to NYC they don't want to see a brand new show that might not be good, they want to see something that everyone says is amazing. So thats why Phantom, Wicked, and recently, In The Heights are selling out.

13 the musical was a joke, legally blonde was going out anyway (hence the reason why they did the show, cuz they werent selling anymore), and I really don't give the Shrek musical too long either. Its got nasty reviews already

    37. 37

Re: Crazydude – no they aren't shutting down the street. i was kiddin'

    38. 38

Re: mamajud – did you notice over the weekend LettyB's poser? LettyB hearts Perez? I was trying to locate for her but no luck. I think it was Saturday???

    39. 39

Re: _Alice_ – i haven't seen pandagurl for awhile

    40. 40

Re: Melissa is always right HAS FANS – i didn't see and am trying to find too, but no luck.

    41. 41

Fuck no!! I missed this show! I am going to buy my tickets now.. You can mess with anything but if you mess with Broadway then I take it personally. What a fucking disaster this mess has turned out to be.

    42. 42

and the more the actors strike the higher these tickets are gonna go. Orchestra seats go for 120 now, they used to be 100 and mez seats were 75-95 and now they're 100

    43. 43

Serves Broadway. As a member of Actor's Equity we as actors get treated like shit and get nothing for it. Most of the people on broadway are young untalented entitled wanna-be's anyway. So maybe this is a good thing to get all the crap off broadway and start clean. If you think this is bad now wait wait wait till after the holidays. You're not hearing the real down fall on things because they don't want to scare people into not shopping for the holiday season.

This country is being louted. There is no depression. Corporate is raping and louting all they can before Obama takes over. This is treason and a disgrace.

    44. 44

Re: Melissa is always right HAS FANSRe: Milky is the ultimate troll – found it……..sunday headline of the weak….doperty edition………god i'm good

    45. 45

I have tickets for Jan 2nd for that show… jeeze that was a close one.

    46. 46

Reality check — If the THEATERS were closing, that would be a true sign of the economy's effect. Many of these closing shows were not very good and they're being replaced, simple as that. Young Frankenstein was never well reviewed from the time it opened. Add to that, shows like Legally Blonde and Spamalot almost immediately tour the nation upon even the slightest Broadway success so when the show comes to your city, what's the point in going to NYC? Ticket prices are too high and last year's strike didn't help anything. Overall, the current roster of shows are only slightly above average and the cost is beyond the value. The "Disney" trend of Broadway caught up with them and you'll see more revivals of classic standbys like South Pacific. Other than Jersey Boys and Wicked, there's not much left that's bankable. That's not the economy, it's a lack of quality.

    47. 47

It's really too bad because they got rid of all the quality musicals, (Rent, Spelling Bee, Cabaret, etc.) and are putting in all of this new crap. Legally Blonde was actually very good and that's gone for some reason and i dont know WHAT they were thinking with this young frankenstein business but as far as im concerned, it's been a bad year for broadway ANNDDD now for some reason, Spring Awakening is also leaving which is suprising because it was supposed to be the new up incoming Rent which lasted over 10 years and spring awakening barely made it to 2 years.

    48. 48

Awww I loved Young Frankenstein. I saw it twice.

There are a lot of closings this year, but there are going to be a lot of new shows in the near future. I'm excited for "Nice Work if You Can Get It" with Harry Connick Jr. All Gerswhin songs so it should be good.

    49. 49

Shows are constantly closing which means shows are constantly opening. The theatre doesnt get shut down when a show closes, a new one opens soon after. Yes, ofcourse some shows last longer than others depending on how future sales look and yes more people should see and support theatre. But it's definitely not in "Danger" people will always buy movie tickets, always watch TV and always go to the theatre. It's an escape. It's entertainment.

    50. 50

I'm not surprised that this one closed, I saw it and it was cute and everything but really nothing special.

    51. 51

The shows may be closing on Broadway, but there will most likely be national tours of these shows.

    52. 52

The message here is that during times when people have money to burn they will go see crappy shows.

    53. 53

I think this is an signal that Broadway plays are (1) too expensive, and (2) too crappy. I mean, really - all they've done lately is recycle old movies, and stupid ones at that. I'm okay with Broadway going completely out of business, it ain't gonna change my world.

      54

Broadway has never seen such a bad time…if im not mistaken not even during the great depression, actually i think it didnt do all that bad during the great depression…im personally very shocked, however i think it has to do with ticket prices, i spent 290 dollars on tickets for three people in not so good seats when i went to see RENT before it closed…maybe instead of closing they should make it more affordable

    55. 55

Nope, this is THE worst year. Me and my family and some co workers go on a bus at least 2-4 times a year to see a show in NYC. (I love in Philly) Next month, we go to see Shrek. I've been to see Phantom of the Opera, The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins, Les Mis… just in the last year. And Les Mis and the Phantom I've seen more than 2x's. This has DEF been THE worst year thus far for them.

    56. 56

I loved Young Frankenstein. I saw it twice. …..
