Bush Thinks It's Okay To Sell Cocaine?

It's typical for a president to give pardons and commutations during their terms in office.
But this current pardon is a bit….odd.
George W. Bush commuted the sentence of a former producer for the Fugees, John Forte, who had spent seven years in prison for cocaine possession with the intent to distribute.
So, now, Forte will soon be freed. He'll only serve a bit more than half of his original 14 year sentence.
Who knew Bush was such a Fugees fan?!
Forte produced and co-wrote two songs on the Fugee's album The Score back from 1996. He was arrested back in 2000 and found guilty of possession of 31 pounds of liquid cocaine to distribute.
And aside from Forte, on Monday night Bush also commuted another man for a cocaine offense and granted 14 pardons.
The president and founder of the advocacy group Families Against Mandatory Minimums supported Bush's decision to commute the sentences of Forte and the other man who had been imprisoned for 15 years.
Apparently the group thinks that sentences for many "low-level, first-time, nonviolent drug offenders" don't fit the crime many times.

I agree….all too often, murderers and rapists get off with a lighter sentence than a first time drug offender. Jails are overcrowded and I would rather see the hard core offenders there.
I cant believe it, but he's RIGHT on this one. We just talked about how much of taxpayer's money is wasted on the corrections system because of low level crime offender's being held long past reasonable limits( to make private corrections facilities more money). For instance here in Michigan, we spend 2 billion a year for corrections, thats much more than we spend on Education in the state and thats the trend across the nation, its horrible. The corrections system is another Big Business conglomerate…so its good that Bush is finally recognizing that on his way out.

You failed to mention that Carly Simon and Warren Hatchett were vying for this man's pardon and have been doing so for years… he got pardoned not because his sentence didn't fit the crime but because Hollywood made it personal (apparently he's BFF's with Carly's son)

It's odd that as Governor of Texas he proudly did not commute any death sentence, even those with some question of guilt. He would just get giggly and say he was doing his job.

I agree w/ President Bush. He served half his sentence; that's a lot. The system does tend to be lenient on first offenders. They'll be more harsh if he violates his probation though. He'll probably be on papers for 10 years…

i agreeee drug minimums are horrible: you can kill someone and get half the sentence of a person that sells weed. wrong.
If drugs were legal, there wouldn't be any "possession with the intent to distribute" charges. Imagine that. Drugs would be sold much like cigarettes and taxed by the government. Think how much money that would bring in both from the taxes and from the huge number of drug enforcement personnel.
Much like prohibition, you can make something illegal, but you can’t remove the demand. Live and learn, or not . . . . as in this case.
I disagreed with many of the 'pardons' that this joker has done. When you read the full list, it's rather depressing. He pardoned a woman who only had 4 years of probation — ffs. Hazardous waste was pardoned. But I guess that's okay, since the citizens of the US have been 'pardoning' his attitude and behaviour now for almost eight years. Watch for more to come, pardons that is, especially with anyone working on his 'terrorist' campaign. He can pardon them in advance of any future indictments. Joy.

As someone has pointed out, mandatory minimum sentences put people who merely possessed sertain drugs in jail as long or longer than rapists. Mandatory minimums do not take into account prior offences, circumstances, etc. of the crime or criminal; all they do is insure that privately owned prisons are kept full and profitable.

Bill Clinton granted pardons and clemency to 456 people during his sham of a presidency. On January 20, 2001, he pardoned 140 or so people during the final hours of his presidency. Included in these pardons and clemencies were terrorists, drug dealers, tax evaders, etc.
Also, the current economic situation can directly be blamed on the Democratic controlled Congress during Clinton's term.
Clinton's failure to actively pursue terrorists also allowed Al Qaida to flourish and has put us in the position this country is in today.
Clinton was and continues to be an embarrassment to this country. His is a legacy of failure.
They probably used to be his dealers.
Without knowing more details, I can't pass judgement on these pardons - however, generally speaking, the sentences given for drug offenses are way too long. Murders and rapists get less time than drug offenders. Dumb.

I think THAT is ridiculous. And the felons repeat offend too. Instead of getting drug addicts TREATMENT
… We send them to prison, which actually makes it worse. You can get plenty of drugs in jail. not to mention the mentality that jail brings. take it from a recovering drug addict that knows many drug addicts in prison who get out and don't know how to deal with their addiction.
