Hospital Employee Admits to Selling Confidential Celeb Patient Information

Former UCLA Medical Center employee Lawanda Jackson pleaded guilty on Monday to selling celebrity medical information to the tabloids.
Britney Spears and Farrah Fawcett are among the many celebs and high profile people Jackson sold out for cash.
The sellout faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
Her sentencing is set for May 2009.
Federal attorneys are also trying to figure out if the tabloids who bought the confidential information off of Jackson could face punishment.
"Certainly there is possible culpability at media outlets if we can determine that they were knowingly paying for the illegal access of celebrity files," said a U.S. attorney spokesman.

What do they mean if they "knowingly" paid for illegally access information? I doubt this lady provided a properly executed release from the celebrities with the records she snuck out. That alone makes it a HIPAA violation. I hope they fry. I think we in this country take for granted the sanctity of somebody's medical information.

Even credit card companies have for years had systems in place to identify any unlawful access to the account information of celebrities.
So much for doctor - patient confidentiality.

Sometimes I think there should be a place in hell for people like this. Same for the National Enquirer. I get told it is just another form of entertainment for the fans-Okay. But when you read some really rude thing that is nothing like the person you now? Nor very nice. It hits even harder when it's about your family. Yes, I have had to give up simple things like just being able to go get a gallon of milk at the store-but my family!?! Leave them alone!!!
