The future of soap operas is looking like a slippery slope!!!
Susan Lucci and the rest of the All My Children crew have taken a dramatic reduction in pay.
This is after NBC's Days of Our Lives axed longtime cast members Deirdre Hall and Drake Hogestyn, and cut everyone's pay by about 40% to keep the show on the air through 2010.
Hall's character had been on the show for 32 years!
Talk about no job security!
Soap audiences are down by a lot, averaging only about 2.6 million viewers a day. At one point there were as many as 12 different soaps on the air, but that number has fallen to 8.
No word on how much of a pay cut Susan is taking, but….she's still probably way overpayed!

I used to love soaps, now networks need to find another Dynasty or just retire the genre
It's doubtful that she is overpaid. Soap stars work more than any other actor/actress.

That fourth hour of Today must be cheap, but then again, it's the worst hour on TV. Try watching it without laughing AT Kathy Lee Gifford. They do really stupid stunts that are just idiotic. NBC sucks as anyway. Jeff Zucker should be fired,
not Deidre Hall.

She's been on All My Children for over 30 years. She is one of 2 original actors left on there. Considering the hours that soap stars work she is deserving of the pay she receives. the problem with soap operas is the outrageous story lines that they have. AMC has had bad storylines, but for the most part they keep up with the times…they were the first to show a transgender character, I believe they were the first to show a lesbian kiss, too. Also, I like the storyline now about the Army vet and how they used real military vets at a therapy session and the guy who plays Brot was a real soldier injured in Iraq.

I highly doubt that Susan Lucci needs money. She has been on her soap since 1970 AND her Husband is LOADED!

I think having the same job for 32 years is the very definition of "job security".
I'm just counting the days until reality TV takes over daytime and the last little bit of my TV-watching life is smashed :/ I only watch General Hospital, I think all the others suck, but that one sole hour is the highlight of my TV life. Sad, sad….Though not sad for Lucci, she's a terrible actress that isn't even good enough for daytime.
that's because everyone's asses have to be at work during the day because of the recession. No one can afford to stay home anymore
Forget about finding a waiter/waitress/bartender job in NY.
Between broadway and the soaps, a lot of out of work performers.
I watch One Life to Live and General Hospital mostly at night on Soapnet. While OLTL is pretty good, GH tries to be The Sopranos, instead of a soap opera. It is a joke, that is why that particularly show has so bled viewers the past few years, the writing and theme is atrocious. We are coming on the days of reality daytime for sure. How many judge shows do we have already?

Uh, yeah, Perez, it's called "the business". Since you blog about its more famous participants perhaps you should have some basic understanding of it. No job security, no unemployment insurance, no sick leave, no maternity leave and rarely anything resembling a pension. Oh, and be prepared to work 12-18 hours a day. Still think it's glamorous?
I used to be into soaps, but the writing isn't what it once was. I get mad at soaps and then have to switch, but I've run out of one's I want to watch. I watched Guiding Light starting around age 8 or 9. I stopped when they decided to kill Richard. The Richard/Cassie storyline was one of the best. AMC lost me when Bianca and Maggie left. They cemented it when they had bianca fall for the trans person. That was weird. You don't go from beautiful women to trans dude's. Passions is off the air. Days just pissed me off by having Nicole miscarry. I may well be done and I've watched soaps since I was 8.
I don't care about other soaps than DAYS OF OUR LIVES! I will support days no matter what. I've been watching since i was 7 years old (YUP! LOL) and i'm 17 now. KEEP DOOL, NBC!

I watch other soaps like OLTL, but it's so dark and sad. There is not 1 happy character on that soap. I get depressed watching it, so i'm not a everyday viewer.
I also watch General hospital. Just in hope that they bring back the amazingly talented Natalia Livingston as EMILY. So they could reunite NIKOLAS AND EMILY (NIKE) and give them a beautiful baby. Nik/Em fans DESERVE it.

You are right, soaps are in trouble. But Susan Lucci "way overpaid"? I highly doubt that…she's been working tirelessly on AMC for 30 years.
Soap Stars work 5 days a week, long hours a day, then many go out and spend weekends at fan events. Soap stars are actors who love their craft as actors and are happy for the work! Period.
If they are willing to take drastic paycuts to help get daytime through a hard time, the daytime audience should be in debt to them!

Used to watch soaps, but the stories are soooooo slow to play out. Boring. Susan Lucci may be a nice person, but she's got to stop the coy, sexy girl act. it's embarrassing.
I watch all the ABC Soaps! Lucci is worth every penny! Without the Vega boys and they are hot! And John McBain OLTL would be dead. Sonny and Jason are still hot. But Sam needs to be with Jason. Yes, bring back Emily! I was there when she started and I want her back!

Soap stars get no respect! They are some of the hardest working actors in show biz and thier pay is minimal compared to prime time shows.
What?? Diedre Hall and the eye candy that is Drake Hogestyn are kicked off of "Days??" NBC might as well go soap-free while they're at it. It was bad enough they dumped "Passions." It's time for "Days" to go, too.
As for La-Lucci, she's set for life, as far as $$$$ is concerned. Hasn't anyone seen her on QVC selling her jewelry and stuff left and right, not to mention she's also on informercials all the time? She might not notice her tinier paychecks.
Suffice it to say, it's time for all soaps to call it a day. Most people I know that used to be into them "religiously" are too busy working their asses off, or if they are unemployed, they are looking for work while they are on.
HD is killing the industry. Soon it will all be HD paid programming. Get ready for the chop-o-matic marathon on 30 channels. All I am saying is find a hobby now.
I love Susan Lucci, and I have just started watching AMC again.
