Australians Don't Feel Too Keen About Australia

Australia isn't feeling too hot about, well, Australia.
The outback epic opened to a steady $4.9 million in one of the Land Down Under's widest releases, which isn't anything to write home about but also isn't anything to sneeze at either.
Despite Nicole Kidman's soundly derided performance, Fox is hoping that co-star and Sexiest Man Alive Hugh Jackman will lure women into Australia's seats.
Additionally, the studio is banking on Baz Luhrmann history repeating itself, with ticket sales picking up as word of mouth spreads, just as it did with Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet. Australia has actually already opened bigger in Oz than both of the director's past endeavors.
We'll see!

chick flick probably, but the previews looked really good.
A CRAPPY MOVIE IS JUST THAT .. A CRAPPY MOVIE !! NO ONE WANTS TO WATCH IT.. AND HUGH JACKMAN ISNT EXACTLY LEADING MAN MATERIAL..AND NICOLE KIDMAN HAS YET TO HAVE A BLOCKBUSTER HIT (AS IN A MOVIE GROSSING OVER 100 MILLION DOLLARS)
Yeahhh so I saw it last week and…it was so-so. Won't be seeing it again even if Hugh is a sexy beast.

Australia was brilliant. I absolutely LOVED it. Hugh Jackman is f#%@king smoking hot. I think it is unaustralian for aussies not to go see a movie that is called Australia, we'll get there we just like to take our time.
the movie was very good and Nicole was amazing in it as well. Perez kept posting that "one" bad review of Nicole kidman when there are tons of great reviews about her performance in the movie. Typical of him, focus on the negative, except when it comes to Madonna when there are more negative press about her than positive ones, but perez spin it the opposite way.
it's not a chick flick either, it's an epic that is worth seeing over and over.
the movie looks beautiful, but someone has to step in and better style Ms. Nicole Kidman! She's so frozen, and her hair is doing nothing for her. If she wants to be young and fresh, she needs to loosen up, and get a better hair cut/style - one that gives her some bangs and frames her face better, instead of showing off her monster forhead - and a more updated, modern, fresh look. She's a new mom - she should look it! No one wants to see a Nicole Kidman flick anymore because she's so dated. If she'd change her ways, people would change their thoughts about her!

I loved the movie! i think it's just a hard movie to find an audience. people arn't use to big epic movies like this anymore. the only people that are going are women which is sad cause it's a great movie!

It was ok. HOWEVER…. have any Americans seen it? I am in Australia, and the whole cinema was laughing when they kangaroo was shot. I doubt that would happen in the US right?
I found a lot of it funny, especially Nicoles over-acting…

I usually dont like Nicoles acting, however she has done a brilliant job in this movie, and is well worth watching! Its not a chick flick. Men & women will both love it.
Worst movie poster in years
A great deal of this movie was filmed in the small North Queensland town of Bowen (close to my home town) and the amount of press on this movie as it was being made was severe overkill.
The way I feel about this movie now is if it came on TV and I had nothing better to do I may watch it.
Nicole has become so plastic fantastic - even if she is a brilliant actress she no longer has the ability to convey an emotion other than "startled deer in the headlights" thanks to her legendary botox use.
Hugh is amazing in anything he does - but will he be enough to carry the movie?

I didn't love it tbh. It was ok, but not that great. I was in Australia when they began filming it and there was so much media buzz about it. Then I was in Sydney again when they had the premiere and the media were creaming themselves over it. So I thought I'd go and see if it lived up to the hype. Seeing Nicole Kidman on screen just made me feel like having something to eat b/c she's so damn skinny, I felt hungry for her! The movie felt like a really bad one night stand with a really hot guy. You build yourself up thinking this is going to be epic and it turns out to be really meh!
Totally agree with Cherricola - I went with 4 friends and thought I wouldn't like it and we all simply loved it; some of us are even going to see it again! I loved the way Baz weaved the theme of 'Wizard of Oz' with the Aboriginal Dreamtime. Both Nicole and Hugh were fine and the little boy was adorable.

V disappointed in Perez. Don't know why he made a fuss over one long-winded negative ruse over Kidman. Was very cynical entering the cinema to see this movie but last night I ate my words- I absolutely LOVED it. The multiple storylines, the cinematography- everything! Can't give it enough praise. Kidman is a true actor, not searching for free entry into clubs or the "it" girl status like most of the featured plastic fantastics. 3 hours flew by, I was really amazed. I think Perez should give this film a break, still, this site is a treat for mindless fun and procrastinating.
isn't 4.9 million pretty good for a country with a population of around 20 million? that'd be like 75 million here. how much do movies usually make there?
I don't think it should have been named Australia, would an Australian be interested in seeing a movie called America or England? Canada? I think people in other countries may shrug it off instead of actually seeing what its about

I work at the movies and almost every session has been sold out… it is a spectacular movie.
Australia is a very good movie. Twilight sucked so I went to see Australia. You will see the qualitative difference between a 2 star movie and a 3 star movie. Brandon Walters stole the movie. Nicole was good as well. You should go see it Perez before you open your trap.

My best friend her hubby went and saw it, and she's almost as picky with her movies as I am, and she LOVED it. She said Nicole Kidman was WONDERFUL but that Hugh Jackman REALLY stole the spotlight….especially with the steamy shower scene. I was already thinking about going anyway, but I will DEFIATLY venture forth to see this movie for myself. I RARELY agree with "critics" when they say a movie is "shite" and even when I DO agree, it's RARELY for the same reason.

Australia was artfully done. The little boy Brandon Walters was extremely charming and was the true star of the movie, even though this was his first time acting–he didnt get top billing. Anyway, I went in there with perez's opinion in my head, and came away loving the film. This movie is only FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE ART IN THEIR FILM. The rest of the people who hate it…go see Twilight, because you are a fast food junkie who love generic stories.

Check out Rabbit Proof Fence based on a true story and set in Australia in the 1930s, the movie is about three aboriginal girls. Excellent film.

I was not a Hugh Jackman fan but this movie definitely turned me in to one. That man is gorgeous. The movie is long but definitely a classic, I want to go and see it again.

I don't know what people are talking about! I think Nicole K. did a fabulous job in this movie. Porcelain doll or not…….she had plenty of facial expressions, great scenes and fantastic-ness throughout the whole film.

I love movies like Legends of the Fall and The Thorn Birds, so this seems up my alley. The only thing is Nicole Kidman. I just don't care for her at all, so I wish someone else was in the female lead role, even an unknown would have been better. PS. Was there anyone else who hated Moulin Rouge? I thought it was overrated crap! I did like Romeo and Juliet though.

Because of all of the bad press on this movie I went in prepared not to like it but it's actually REALLY good - beautifully shot and Nicole and Hugh were great!
It had the makings of a great adventure/love story, but there were too many storylines happening and none of them being given proper attention - no love story was built, you didn't feel it between the two main characters. Nicole just can't act and has no depth or emotion, so the love story was probably never going to work…. Seemed to me like someone needed to check the director and tell him to edit about 40 extra minutes out!

The movie was fab, film making like it should be. Screw the box office. Oscar worthy and brilliant films don't necessarily need to be the ones that make the most money. Hugh deserves an Academy Award!!
ugh im so sick of the nicole kidman plastic comments. whether she has had the alleged botox or not, in this movie she was fantastic with many facial expressions and a lot of beauty and A LOT of talent. hugh jackman was soo hot and brandon walters was adorable and fabulous. the movie overall was brilliant…something i have already seen twice and will see at least twice more. and that amount of money made in australia is the equivalent to like 76 million here
i think you are speaking a bit too soon. i went to see it on opening night people were queing out the door for it and everyone clapped at the end. i am australian and i will definetly buy the dvd when it comes out. It is actually quite educational with all the japanese bombings. i didn't even know darwin got bombed till now. And just how they re-created what life was like for early settlers. i think all young aussies should go to watch it.
