Excuses, Excuses

| Filed under: Film FlickersWacky, Tacky & True

In a recent interview, Frank Spotnitz, co-writer and co-producer of this summer's X File movie, I Want to Believe, says the film flopped at the box office because it was up against the phenomenon that was Dark Knight, not cause it was shiteous:

"Our theatrical performance this past summer notwithstanding, I think The X-Files is still a natural for theatrical release. We just opened the wrong week. The week after The Dark Knight, I think, was just not the right week for us. I think it was especially brutal to us because we weren't counter-programming. We weren't Mamma Mia! or Step Brothers. We were a little dark scary movie coming in the fumes, in the exhaust, of this mammoth machine that was The Dark Knight. And I don't think we had a chance!"

Is he a bit delusional or does he have a point?

Did U see the X Files movie?

We heard it was crap!

this show was awesome when it first came out.

  3. 3

why don't you post this fast during the day???

  4. 4

    it sucked sooooooooooooo BAD.

  5. 5

    fuck the movies.

I saw it the day it opened. The people who said it sucked were the people who were looking for the conspiricy (sp?) angle of the main story arc. However, some of us knew that wouldn't be happening and to expect a movie that was more along the lines of a 'monster of the week' episode. And in that way it delivered. It was a good movie (with awesome cinematography) and I really liked it. I'm a die-hard X-phile!

  9. 9

Oh, whatever I LOVED X-Files, yes it wasnt the best at the box office but neither are some other movies but they're still good.

I've been a fan for years and let me tell you, the movie was SHIT-TASTIC!

  14. 14

i fell asleep it was shit

Re: Hot Monkey Love Obama Style! – I can prove I'm real, just taste this Ball Gravy!

  16. 16

it was extremely bad. i felt as though, i truly wasted away precious moments from my life.

  17. 17

the movie was awesome, I saw it opening night but Frank is right - it didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell against the Dark Knight. had they opened in like October instead, it would have been more successful I think. I thought it was fantastic performances by both David & Gillian.

there was such a long wait for XF2 movie that I think everyone expected it to be some Oscar-worthy performance. that's unrealistic. I thought it delivered, and I bought it on DVD yesterday, so whatever.

  18. 18

Saw it….. It flopped at the box office because it was realeased 10 years too late !! Hell I like the X-Files and I couldn't remeber half of what I needed too to get the film. Fringe is better

  19. 19

This movie sucked big time. It was a B movie that should never have been made.

  20. 20

I think he has a point. It's exactly what I thought when it was released. It was a decent movie that kept my attention and it was quite beautiful visually. I truly do believe that it would have done much better at the box office if it didn't come out on the tails of The Dark Knight. It's a shame! Regardless, for the few of us that saw it, it was nice to see Mulder and Scully back on the screen!

  21. 21

I saw it. It wasn't that good it was like a regular tv episdoe. definitely not movie material.

  22. 22

The tv show was stuff of legend. Best in recent history - and yes, the movie didn't match up to that.
But it should not have been released the week after the Dark Knight - it was a small movie, with a small budget and would have performed better around October, November at the box office.
The whole movie was set in snow and it was completely 20th century Fox's fault because they pushed for the July release date.

  23. 23

I really wanted this movie to be good and I thought it could have been, but… it was really bad. It looked all ghetto and the plot was just blah. I found myself wondering how they actually put it out like that. Yeah- it sucked. I'm glad I saw it at the $5 theater!

  24. 24

    i saw it…
    and i really liked it…
But i loved that show….i think if you were not a fan of the show….u might not like it as much….

  25. 25

Thought the movie was awesome, and yeah he's probably a little delusional but I'm still hoping they'll make another movie! But yeah if you didn't watch the whole show you would really not get/like the movie.

  26. 26

Ok, the movie wasn't the best but it certainly wasn't bad ether. I was surprised by its performance at the box office. The Dark Knight really did do a number on potential ticket sales. I hope they still do a third one but I'm guessing it's doubtful now.

  27. 27

    IT'S ME

  28. 28

Nope did not interest me one bit

  29. 29

    I have to agree…

It was awesome and I went out and bought the blu-ray yesterday!!!

  31. 31

As much as I loved the X-Files TV show, and as much as I wanted to love the movie, the truth is it just wasn't that good. There were so many episodes that were better than the movie: Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose; Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space'; Post-Modern Prometheus; Small Potatoes (to name a few).

  32. 32

When they include all that romance crap between Muldar and Scully, it weighs down the story until it sinks. This is done just to draw in the females. The early episodes didn't have this and they were so much better.

  33. 33

The movie was wonderful! I watched it last night and I rewatched it today. I liked it so much I then went and bought it. I am a die hard fan of the show and the movie was awesome. I think they got screwed because of the dark knight, they openned against to big of a movie. You have to watch it…it is worth it.

  34. 34

Admit it Frank, it was SHIT! I'm a huge fan of The X files. I've read better fanfics than "I want to believe". I hated the way they managed Scully and Mulder relationship, I was really disappointed. Shame on you.

  35. 35

I thought it was pretty good, actually. I was kinda surprised. lol

  36. 36

EFU it was so good and true to the XFILES series - honestly! It could have been longer!

  37. 37

I loved it, but I feel like it was only for the die hard fans.. and not just the die hards, but the shippers specifically (and if you don't know what that means, look it up). I was fortunate enough to be an extra in the movie and got to meet everyone involved. It was an amazing experience.

  38. 38

I think that the reason this movie wasn't a commercial success was due to the general public who is used to crappy films. The audience wants things to be set up for them, they don't want to have to think about something, they want the instant gratification. Most movie goers don't want to take a journey with a film because they are so conditioned to thinking that if shit blows up or your peeing your pants its makes a good film, hence Stepbrothers and Dark Knight. That is why thought provoking films like this get over looked by the dumbed down audience. IMO IWTB was one of the most under-rated films of the year, it was a phenomenal film that people weren't ready for. Its out on dvd now, I definitely recommend it.

  39. 39

I saw the movie, I've also seen every episode.
It was a good movie to see if you are a fan, it was like a long episode and great to see the two of them together again. I can see how a non fan wouldn't enjoy it though.

Gillian Anderson is a fucking fox man.

  40. 40

I loved the movie, but I've been a fan of the series since the beginning. It was an adult, conversation film about redemption. Putting it in the midst of the CGI mania of summer films geared toward fanboys was crazy. This movie featured great acting and a complex storyline– much more indie film than summer blockbuster. Happily, I picked it up on DVD yesterday!

  41. 41

I love X-Files but the movie wasn't good.

  42. 42

Just watched it tonight. POS… It's about a friggin' Frankenstein Doctor that's trying to a guy's head on a woman's body… Truly fucked up!

  43. 43

Don't listen to those who said it suck'd!
They thought that way because they didn't really know the show.
Those of us who did, LOVED IT!
It wasn't about aliens but it was entrenched in the central themes of belief in something.
Being Athiest, being faithful to some G-d, what have you.
It was an utterly entertaining film if only all of you would take a moment to stop judging.
    Well, written script.
Why be so negative? Don't you WANT quality scripts to be written and made or do you just like shit.
And it isn't an excuse. They have the right to say they had difficulty opening opposite
the highest grossing film of all time. It was a small film by hollywood standards no matter how you slice it.
Successful film for me and those I saw it with!

  44. 44

It also didn't help that it opened the same weekend of ComicCon, where most of the fan base was, at least on the West coast. The film would have been better if it wasn't such a typical story line and didn't involve religion.

  45. 45

I am a HUGE X-Files fan, and Honestly, the movie was okay. it would have been much better as an Episode, it was more monster of the week, than movie.

it would have still done bad regardless of Dark Knight.

  46. 46

Maybe, just maybe it was because it was ten years too late!!!! And the other maybe was that it was a stupid, stupid plot.

  47. -liz- says – reply to this

i think he has a great point..dark knight and x-file are similar kinds of movies and x-file couldn't compete against dark knight. if it had come out at a time when there wasn't all the publicity and attention on dark knight then it would definitely have done better.

  48. 48

Liked the show- watched every episode- even the not so good ones- was SUPER excited for the movie which SUCKED!!!! They all should be ashamed to have been a part of it. It was a crime that it was allowed to be put on the big screen and called a movie. Very sad.

  49. 49

i think he is dulisional, he should ask the fans and then…
the movie was not scary as he calls it, and it was not little they spent a lot of money making it.
it was nothing more than a glamorized episode at best,
there were no aliens, nothing zip nada
people thought it sucked because it sucked

  50. 50

I am a huge X-Files fan and this movie was a huge let down.

  51. 51

I think that this show was awesome when it first came out…..

  52. 52

I enjoyed the movie, but I do believe the story was fairly week for a feature film of the xfiles. After that much time off they definitely needed to bring a much stronger story to the big screen.

  53. 53

Hubby and I watched it last night and LOVED it! I thought it was a great movie. And I knew going into it that it wasn't going to be coming off the heels of the show which I liked. But I agree, going up against the Dark Knight was a bad idea.

  54. 54

    i actually liked the movie

  55. 55

Maybe before you talk shit about a movie you should see it for yourself Perez. It was actually a great movie. A fan of the X-files television show would definitely appreciate it, it you didn't care for the show don't bother with this movie.

  56. 56

darn! i was just looking at the tori amos pic, and i was thinking, i wish i got to meet her at the san diego comic con this past summer, then, i scrolled down, and i was like, hey, is that…the comic con logo? it IS!! (x-files music)

  57. 57

I am not an x-file fan, but when this movie came out i watch it twice in one day. The main characters david and gillian have so much chemistry onscreen. Then i got hooked on these two they seem so cute, i stop by youtube and man weren't these two hot at their premiers. Now that is sexier than brangelina and tomkat and all the other overrated stories.

  58. 58

    Re: nevergonnagetit

hey um i was on teds page and everyone seem to be asking for you and someone name flats/highheels. I just figured i would let you know since i saw your name here.

I saw the movie. It was VERY DARK! I like it though it was really deep. If you are a fan you would enjoy it. It didn't have CGI or aliens. It was a freaky story and very realistic. The National Geographic Channel did a story with Lisa Ling about people that sell thier organs and organ stealing. Those of you with a brain will love it!

  60. GIO says – reply to this

Re: merlee – Very good. Agree 100%

  61. 61

I enjoyed the movie a lot. I was expecting aliens but it was still a great movie.

  62. 62

I saw it at midnight and I liked it. It was a character driven monster of the week. If there is an X-Files 3 it NEEDS to resolve the mytharc. The X-files is the best show ever. I bought the 3 disc set :)

  63. 63

My boyfriend and I saw it with some friends and it SUCKED ASS!!!!!! We we soooooo disappointed!!!! Wasted money!!! I wouldn't even recommend renting it. We were not lookin for any conspiracy shizzz, only a cohesive, sensical movie.

  64. 64

Hey nevergonnagetit. You have left us hanging :) . News is coming out that David and Tea have gotten back together. What's up with that? I thought you said we would hear more about David and Gillian?

  65. 65

dublinlover now i see why everyone on ted's page wanted to hear from nevergonnagetit or flatsorheels. well i guess they seem to be disappointed because david and what's her name ah tea and david are getting back together. but i must admit that reading their comments were fun. i just saw them in the movie and i like them alot they seem cute together.this was a fun story about gillian and david i was never into celebrity gossip but the news about these two people were fun and new. i got tired of hearing about bangelina, maniston tomkats just to name a few.

  66. 66

it was alright, it wasn't as good as it could have been, but it wasn't a total bomb.

  67. 67

i just saw it the other day. it was great, but i was already a big x-files fan from back in the day. wish it was still on.

  68. 68

i loved it too…..the first time i saw it (at midnight opening night, like a good files fan!) i loved the mulder/scully storyline and finally seeing them as a real couple was a treat for those of us who waited throughout the series for them to finally be together, in the same location! and of course the chemistry between david and gillian goes without saying. and the cinematography and the music is also phenomenal.

  69. 69

    Re: nevergonnagetit

hey why don't you head over to ted's board, the conversation over there is very interesting.
