"From worse to worser"? WTF is that? Mario, you need to get your sister some English lessons. Yikes….

  5. 5

Let them file for bankruptcy and reorganize! Even with billions loaned to them they probably still won't survive anyway.

why do you blog about this stuff? I come to your site for fluff and fun not reminders about the economy.

  7. 7

Re: gimlet123 – better yet….let their creditors force them into bankrupcy

  9. 9

If they get bailed out, I will be pissed. They dug themselves into that hole and they need to get themselves out of it. If we give them all that money it will all get flushed down the toilet (I'm quoting Michael Moore here). Two of these three agreed to no longer use corporate jets….but not Chrysler!! My company just announced no raises and no bonuses for x-mas (which were pretty substantial in previous years)…what is Chrysler doing to cut back?? Ugh!

HAHA you actually think the people that visit this site give a rats ass about this?

  15. 15

Perez, I don't think you understand what it is like in Michigan. The auto industry was our life-line for a century, and now it is in the shitter. Further, if it is in the shitter, it's much harder for Detroit to make more energy/fuel-efficient vehicles, stalling the green auto movement. Detroit has the highest foreclosure rate in the nation and the rest of our state is feeling this severe economic decline. It's easy to be all high and mighty when you are from a state that's biggest worry is a union strike for the film and tv industry, but out here in the real world people in Detroit are fucking dying because they lost their job at the factory and their houses are being foreclosed upon.

I'm far more concerned with the "un-regulated, no restriction" handout to Wall Street —
    -
Why on earth were there not stipulations in place, i.e. huge salary cuts, no bonus, no corporate spa-retreat weekends, etc. before they were given a dime??

  17. 17

I think if you guys want to voice your opinions about such serious topics, please be well-informed. Do more research than just what Perez says.

Chrysler did get a loan a couple decades ago and they paid it all back before it was even due back. They are doing major cutbacks. By the end of this year, 1 of every 4 employees will be out of a job. Also, for every 1 losing his/her job at one of the big 3, 7.5 employees at the suppliers is losing theirs'. Just to put in perspective for all of you. Where are they supposed to go after they are laid off? How will they feed their families? I know it's not your fault for this, but it is not theirs either. Look at the big picture here and quit focusing on the private jets. It was the CEOs that did that, not the workers who will be the ones struggling if there is no bailout.

I agree with Bailey's Mom above (can't "reply" for some reason) that they dug themselves into this whole by refusing to develop gas efficient cars, etc. - they truly misread the market and should not be wholly rewarded for it.
    -
However, I did like the provisions as laid out which would require more research & development in eco-friendly vehicles, etc., cut in salaries, cut in bonuses - and if they are willing to accept, and the workers can be re-trained for the new jobs this would require - than I for it.
    -
Why are we bailing ANYONE out, though? Lend them money at the market rate? Sure. But a handout?
    -
Regarding the Wall Street Welfare handout of GW Bush - largest welfare act of the century - and all those little republicans voted in DUBYA because they don't want a dime of their money going to free-loading welfare people — well, you all got a whole lot more than you bargained for - good job electing Bush — we call get to suffer now.

I SAY DON'T GIVE ANYONE ANY MONEY AND GET BACK THE 700 BILLION 2

Re: Gigi14 – Gigi - I agree - but its the same with any company that does not re-tooled itself for the future — and the Big 3 didn't - the desire for more economical cars is nothing new - its been going on for years.
    -
They also really, really should have seen it coming that more and more, folks are using alternative transportation (I live in DC, and at the max, get in my car twice a month).
    -
Not that rural areas can do the same, but the tendency is to hang onto your car for longer — that said, those workers can be making a mint if they choose to beome car mechanics — its a different market now, and folks looking to maintain older cars is sharply on the rise.
    -
Anyone looking for an emerging market - open a car service shop — you'll do well.

  22. 22

I only need about $100,000k to get and stay afloat. Where's mine??

  23. 23

I love how they call it a "$34 billion dollar LINE OF CREDIT"
hahaha - ya right! And who's going to pay that back when the companies still collapse??
    A: no one.
Save everyone a bunch of time and just flush 34 billion down the toilet.
Or better yet, give the $34 billion to the citizens of the USA.

  24. 24

Yeah they say they need 7 billion dollars just to get through the next month. What about the next? And the next?

Let those bad companies and those BAD unions go down!

Re: pfostnic – I completely hear what you and Gigi are saying. I'm from Windsor myself, so obviously know all about our economy depending heavily on the Big 3. That being said, they've been dying a slow death for years now. Layoffs, factories shutting down, etc. Those loans *may* help them restrain from more layoffs for a bit, helping those workers out, but I think the Big 3 are just a dying horse at this point. You can't keep bailing out something that doesn't work, that's like keeping your brain dead grandma on life support forever. People in Detroit and Windsor put blame on the workers and unions for their high salaries, put they are their to protect them from those scumbag CEOs who just don't fucking get it, and apparently never will. Let these corps DIE already, any loans that go out should go directly to those workers that will be laid off (minus the high paid jackasses), to help them out while they try and find work elsewhere. New car companies will come in that are current and understand the market, and will be able to prosper on their own. God knows the US is founded on capitalism, and this is a part of it.

    Wow that was wordy.

  27. 27

Over the past couple of weeks, I've learned much about the auto industry and their workers. Though, harsh at first (because of the first showing of their CEO's in Washington), I realize now that the total economy and existence of these "auto towns/cities" totally rely on this business.

However, the CEO's have much to account for. There's NOT a Lee Iacocca among them. That's the type of person we need now.
