The Biggest Mistake America Is Making

Instead of bailing out ALL these huge institutions, the U.S. government needs to help out our institutions of higher learning!

As a result of the shiteous economic climate, many states are cutting public funding of higher education.

No! NO! Nooooo!!!

The federal government already has taken emergency steps to boost lending to students, but that's NOT ENOUGH.

Colleges are instituting hiring freezes, planning enrollment cuts and discussing steep tuition increases.

If we make it harder for the youth of America to get an education, then this country is really fucked!

I had a higher education, burn while you learn!

Just have them read your blog and they'll really see how stupid people are. Then they'll put billions toward education…

  4. 4

Hey, maybe they can be bloggers…..

  5. 5

    amen, perez

  6. 6

    :/

  7. 7

Fucking A, and how about ending that costly fucking war now…

  8. 8

Exactly. My tuition has gone through the roof this year and I'm not sure my family can afford it if it goes any higher. UGH.

  9. 9

As a Professor at a local community college by me, I have to agree with you Perez. The fact that higher learning is taking a backseat to getting help, I am a bit worried about my future. I do have tenure yet, and unfortunately, they are starting to hire more adjuncts. The best thing to do would to high more full-time, but then that requires the University or College to provide healthcare to theses full time instructors.

I have also learned that where I did my M.A. at, in TN, their tuition is skyrocketing for the SPRING. They are currently experiencing the hiring freeze, and my former colleagues have informed me that they might need to start letting go professors in our department because of the amount of students leaving the major and the school altogether.

In case you would ike to know, I am a Professor of Communications.

Thanks for listening to my rant. ;-)

Well put your precious Angie on line 1 and ask her to adopt this time an american kid and donate some money to her country, that ambitious bitch only does charity in Africa and other places cause those are the only ones that guarantee her good press!

  11. 11

i'll be paying for 4 yrs of undergrad and 3 years of law school (7 years of higher ed) for 28 years…you do the math….we need help!

  12. 12

Come on, help out us college kids!

  13. 13

my school, the university of southern maine, is laying off ALL of its part time staff for next year/semesters…which is HORRIBLE because most of the good teachers are the part time ones, and the teachers who dont care about their students grades are the full time ones…what happened to quality vs. quantity?

  14. 14

They did this to themselves in many states by raising tuition without merit forcing states to sponsor more and more. Look at the inflation rate and then the rate state institutions have raised tuition.

I'm sorry have university facilities or professors salaries gone up that much? No!

So just like every other business they are suffering from their own greed. Perhaps this will make them lower tuition rates.

  15. 15

We have been on a downward slope for 8 years - this is not a surprise. I have 2 nephew and 1 niece in college now, with a 4th starting in the fall - its utterly sickening, and I'm only thankful they are getting sports scholarships, though academia is more their "thing."
    -
My sister and her husband saw this coming for their 3 children - those kids HAD to excel at sports.
    -
What is so sad is before this insipid war, many had joined the service to get an education - then, the FAKE WAR - and some were killed - it was their only means to get higher-level degrees.
    -
anyone out there that does not see the damage the Republican Administration has done is blind — and the fact the GOP is still pandering S. Palin is a TRUE INDICATION NOTHING HAS CHANGED.
    -
    Never, ever vote republican.

  16. 16

Ummm….how about we help out the K-12s before the institutions of higher learning?

There are too many idiots in college already - let's fix THAT!! Money and support for public ed, peeps. Where it's at.

  17. 17

    Re: TSS – Heehee. Truth.

I appreciate you writing about this Perez!! I work at a state university and every day I see students who have to withdraw from classes because they or their parents can longer afford to send them to school. It breaks my heart that they have to give up their chance at an education. Students are struggling because less financial aid is available. The worst part is when they leave the university there are fewer and fewer jobs to find at home.

  19. 19

    This is horrible.
America is just going down the drain.
I can't believe they let it get this way.

  20. 20

perez, stop pretending to even remotely understand economics. you're an uneducated DOLT. had we not bailed out the financial system, the country - no, the entire world - would be at a stand still. no money to lend means business doesn't run. millions, not thousands, of jobs would have been lost and we would have seen a slowdown like never before. stop acting like it's a bad idea

i'm not saying education doesn't need more funding - it indeed does. but money was certainly better spent, at least in the short term, on the financial sector

  21. mnw07 says – reply to this

    21

So as far as the idea that they are making more funds available to students, that is a problem, but a lot of people don't know about a bigger problem that is starting to occur at colleges across the US. I have no problems with financial aid, because my parents invested in a prepaid college program, but i am still feeling the problems with the lack of funds. I go to FSU and because of all the education cuts, not only are they raising tuition, but they are also now starting to cut back on the classes offered and the amount of people that can actually take the classes because they cant afford to run the class. I have a major problem with the fact that i am paying thousands of dollars to get my degree, and then not being able to get into the classes that i need, all because they cant afford to give them. This is something that the federal government needs to fix, and they need to fix it fast.

  22. 22

    I agree! They're such idiots!

  23. 23

    GOOD
    /
    /
maybe if the professors would ACTUALLY teach the curriculum instead of indoctrinating and brainwashing students this may not have happened
    /

TENURE should NOT entitle a teacher to a job FOREVER.

Re: LULU~* – You really need to get off the fukin politics. We are fukin sick of that shit. You really must be jealous of Sarah Palin. You won't ever stfu about her ass. Maybe, you want to assfuk her, huh? In that case, talk toRe: Big Black Dick – BBD, he'll fix you right up with someone that looks exactly like her ass for you. hehehehee

    25

Perez, what DON'T you understand about the GOP.?! Keeping people stupid is the only way they stand a chance. FYI, you live in a city with the worst schools in the nation because Bush's No Child Left Behind policies force teaches to teach to the level of the slowest kids in the class (which in L.A. are kids with no English who spend half the year in rural Mexico and will NEVER be at "grade level"). They are TRYING to destroy public education. If you're going to talk politics and policy you OWE YOUR READERS to at least do some of the basic research on the subject.

  26. 26

What's so hard to understand? Tha Government WANTS US S T U P I D and IGnorants so they use us like slaves , NO brain - do what I tell you, stupid….something like this . DO NOT THINK - just do it !!!! their LOGO…… This government HAS A PLAN -but not for the good of the ordinary people. WAKE UP PEOPLE and fight,do not sleep…in a few years we'll try to run out of this country, they'll pay the new immigrants just to come to USA….

  27. 27

Don't worry, at the rate we're going, everyone will be employed by the federal gov't and we will not have to worry about our future.

  28. 28

idiot, where are all these college pukes going to work once they get done with school if we don't keep the companies going?

Stick to brainless celeb commenting, you know nothing about anything else.

  29. 29

Yeah, I'm a college student and it's almost impossible to find loans anymore. My best friend will most likely have to drop out because they froze all loans applied for after August. Having fewer educated people is going to hurt our country even more. It's scary.

  30. 30

    You are an idiot

Stop pretending like you know fucking anything, you useless piece of shit.

perez can report whatever he wants to, it's his blog, eh…

  33. 33

    Re: adt

Actually he DID attend college. NYU to be exact!!!

  34. 34

    seriously.
not only did my school cut back professors/staff (including ALL of our academic advisors)
it cut back scholarships (and including my other scholarship being dropped because the company "couldn't afford it") making my next semester nigh impossible to happen.

  35. 35

Re: SheriMoonZombie – You are welcome to debate me anytime, provided you can learn to speak and write like, let's say at least, the high school level.
    -
I've seen your tripe - come up with documented facts, and we'll talk.

  36. 36

Well - who put us (also here in Europe) in this misery??? The higher educated people cause they think they are know-it-alls - shame on them.

But I agree with you - education can not be a second class system - that's terribly wrong.

  37. 37

Life is scientifically like business or wildlife. Pyramid shaped. Clerks are at the bottom of the food chain and number many, Executives are at the apex of the pyramid and number few. Rodents number many, foxes and birds of prey number few.
Likewise, Testing should be done to decide who is admitted to university. Why waste time in the fallacy of handing out meaningless degrees to dumb-dumbs, when we should be finding and grooming only our intellectual youth in our colleges and universities…???
Somebody's got to dig ditches, wait tables, do my hair, and do my nails.

  38. 38

Our children's education is MUCH more important than bailing out those fucking auto and bank industries!

  39. 39

They're cutting state-sponsored higher ed by at least 2% in Virginia….I think my tuition is going up about $3000 a semester :( Luckily I go to a public school so it won't be too much more expensive, but I can't even imagine what it will cost to go private.

Getting into classes is impossible here, with 30,000 students. Now of course that they're eliminating professors, classes offered, and making class sizes even smaller, I don't know if I'll be able to graduate on time simply because I can't take the classes I need for my degree!

  40. 40

I work at one of the California State Universities and its insane the cuts they are making. Perez, this cannot be the answer. I have friends that were scheduled to graduate this spring but can't because of the cuts to classes! How can we expect things will get better if we aren't educating our people!? The CSU's are turning away students, not supporting the ones they have and next week our University could be annoucing layoffs!! Its scary.

  41. 41

Here, here Perez! Tuition keeps getting higher and higher, but no ones wages are increasing. My school's been forced to cut funding to programs like the Office of the Victim Advocate, which helps those who have been sexually abused or raped. It's just awful how education has taken a backseat to, well, pretty much everything.

  42. 42

Why should Government be responsible for paying anyones tuition? What ever happened to working your way through school!!

  43. 43

Amen, Perez! This issue does not get enough attention. As a country our test scores are falling, drop out rates are rising and kids in inner city schools have to bring their own toilet paper to school because the school isn't providing it due to budget cuts. This will be America's demise if we don;t do something about it.

  44. 44

Like you know a goddamn thing about education. You have a worthless degree… drama?! Drama and hissy fits, you know plenty about that, but you don't know shit about the real world sissy.

  45. 45

GRADUATE LOAN FORGIVENESS!!!!! PUSH FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  46. 46

Im in college, and tuition for entering freshmen has doubled in 2 years!!! I had to withdraw one semester b/c even though I live alone, I still have to include my parents (who are in another state) on my FAFSA and what they make… so even though I dont have mommy & daddy paying for everything, I am stuck with what my loan cant cover… and with books and all the crazy stuff professors make you get like microsoft office, $100 calculators, etc… it is crazy expensive! I came back this year and could afford it, but only because I was in a wreck and was give a little bit of money as worker's comp and pain & suffering. And if I wouldnt have had that– then I would have to shell out $2300. In 2006, I only had to shell at $1000…see how much its increased? And loans dont increase with the crazy tuition price.

  47. 47

Dude this is jacked up….P-rez what can u do to help…I say u should start blogging more about these injustices instead of the fucking stupid famous ppl…I am sick of hearing about day after day…tho I do choose to log in I am getting a bit sick of the same ol…let's start a revolution…pretty pls?

  48. 48

Rather than bail out the irresponsible big guys, the govt should give money to the Small Business Administration so they can make direct, ultra low cost loans to people who wnt to revitalize our communities with local commerce. Right now the the most successful form of small business is drug dealing. That can change, and it's got to, or we're doomed. We are as free as we decide to be.

  49. 49

I just got an email today from the president of my university that they are increasing the tuition next semester by $400.
    :(
    this is getting ridiculous.

  50. 50

    This is so true Perez!
I go to the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
and I received an email about a month ago telling me that because of the economy I might not receive all the federal funding that I usually get. This scares me because I rely on that to pay for my school since my family can't afford it and I wont be able to afford loans to pay it off. I'm just really worried

  51. 51

Perez you appear very unintelligent when you post shit like this. First of all the government has been involved in our public school systems for a long time and they are F'd UP… so thanks, but no thanks.. Stick to your issues like Prop 8 and other trash like that and keep government out of our Colleges and your ignorant opinion of this to you self….. it bores me.

    A College Sophomore

  52. 52

Re: Daniela6483 – A community college instructor and you have tenure… congrats… professors who teach at Community College do so because they cannot hack it at the University level. Let me get this straight… you have a MA in Communications and they best you can do is a community college? I don't get that. There is something not adding up here…. I am not sure what the missing info is, maybe you tried the professional business world and it did not work out for you, or you just settled because with an MA you certainly could have done better than CC. Go in peace.

  53. 53

"Instead of bailing out ALL these huge institutions, the U.S. government needs to help out our institutions of higher learning!"

I couldn't agree more!! This fallout, I believe, is the direct result of 1980's corporate greed. They've been running their businesses with a lot of bad attitudes and tactics for decades and this is the result. You can't have success for too long when you're getting it at the expense of others. Companies need to treat their customers and employees with respect, pay fair wages and benefits and not try to rip people off. Unhappy workers don't do more than the bare minimum to earn their paychecks, hence the poor quality of many USA-manufactured goods and lack of consumer interest in buying them or of dealing with the shitty customer "service" of such companies.

Additionally, the economy would not be suffering as much if more attention was paid to offering more people a chance at higher education. These people, with further education, could be contributing to society and improving it, rather than ending up in poverty for lack of being able to get a decent job or turning to crime to make the money they can't make legally.

  54. 54

I go to a university and they cut the adjunct professors by 40% just in my dept.

  55. 55

many schools are also lowering the maximum number of units students can take in a semester. so much for graduating in 4, even 5 years. as if tuition hasn't gone up enough in the past few years (when i started it was just over $1000/ semester, it's gone up to roughly $1800/ semester), it's gonna go through the roof now!

  56. 56

    we.are.screwed.

  57. 57

    America is GOING DOWN

  58. 58

UHH! The best thing for any government to do during a recession is INCREASE government spending, not cut it!

  59. 59

great point perez… i graduate from college next semester and in addition to already having enough loans to pay off they announced yesterday that our tuition is being raised hundreds of dollars for the semester. Stop giving people billions of dollars who cant live without vacations or private jets and let us get our education

  60. 60

I could not agree more. The higher they raise tuition, either the least likely students will go to school or the more students will come out with debt. And essentially, debt is one of the hugest reasons we're in the mess we're in now.

  61. 61

*** If we make it harder for the youth of America to get an education, then this country is really fucked! ***

Why? They can all be homo bloggers like you and make a living.

  62. 62

    Re: LULU~*
    #15
We have nothing to worry about. The House and Senate are now run by Democrats, Obama said he would end the war, free health care is on the way, what's even cooler is that change has come to Washington now that Mr. Obama (votes aren't cast till Dec. 15) will be taking over. It's great to see he's appointing people who are fresh faces in Washington.

  63. 63

    Amen.

  64. 64

WHY THE FUCK ARE WE BAILING OUT THE AUTO COMPANIES!

  65. 65

Seriously what the hell are they thinking and doing over there? A country full of morons without any education…oh yeah that's sure to fix ALL of our problems. Ughs. Fucking stupid!

  66. 66

amen! seriously i'm already in enough debt because of school i don't need any more because of this

  67. 67

Re: sexygayrepublican – Because american auto companies pay taxes that makes the tuition lower for college students. When the economy is not doing well, the tuition increases because of this lost tax money.

  68. 68

This is so upsetting. College students work their butts off every semester. I am in college and i have a lot of friends who have financial aid and even have to work a job and study at the same time because the tuiton prices have gone up. This needs to stop right away, its bad enough that we are working so hard to get a degree and having no free time what so ever because we are always studying to get a degree or working to pay it off. If anything, it is worse that obama wants all of us college students to pay for people who sit on their butts all day so no when we graduate, our money is going to go towards them and our student loans. The government needs to figure this out right away or so many people are not going to be able to attend college at all

  69. K1234 says – reply to this

    69

NO, Perez is right. There are budget cuts everywhere! My university might raise tuition, cut teacher assistants, payroll salary, lesser classes! It is scary! How is our country going to progress if no one can afford higher education?? Yeah, this country is going to be fucked, not now, but in the future. All the people now who can't afford education, will not advance later on in life. Getting out of poverty is getting an education. If college is going to be more expensive, then the people in poverty will not have a chance to get out of poverty. Yeah there are those small chances that they get lucky and win the lottery, etc, but for 99% of the rest of poor people are going to remain poor and the rich is going to get richer.
Don't call Perez a freakin idiot, if you don't go to college yourself and not put in the position where you can't go to a university, because you can't afford it anymore. Some people WANT to have an education. People need to stfu if they don't know shit.

  70. 70

Re: LULU~* – AHMEN TO THAT!

  71. 71

tell me about it - my school district is facing a 10% cutout in spending, and all UC colleges are raising by TEN PERCENT their fees…and cutitng back about 10000 in admissions total in state! yikes =/

  72. 72

shut the fuck about things you dont know dick about perez
