  10. 10

This has set one of the most dangerous precidents in canadian history. My heart breaks for Canadians and the fall of democracy!!!

  11. 11

Eugh Stupid harper, fucking everything up. Merci beaucoup.

  12. 12

Harper is an idiot. He wanted to take away Canadians right to strike, and he wanted to take away election funding, which pissed off the opposition parties. So the opposition parties (Liberals, NDP & Bloc) formed a coalition. Harper wasn't having any of that, so he spoke with the Governor General, and had Parliment suspended so that they could avoid a non-confidence vote, and therefore the Coalition now can't take over as the new leaders.

  13. 13

The Governor General is from Quebec, and she is the one who wanted to make Quebec it's own independant country. She doesn't give a fuck about the rest of the country. Hell if it was up to her every Canadian would be french!

  16. 16

As a Canadian - Harper needs to R-E-S-I-G-N!!

  17. 17

It is a play by the opposition parties to take over the government! And this is just after our federal election in which the People (us) voted in that government! If the 3 opposition parties are allowed to do this, it could mean the end of democracy. Yes, Perez, it is outrageous and thanks for pointing it out.

  18. 18

what an absolute idiot….thats our dick head…oops i mean prime minister!

  19. 19

WASHINGTON—Nearly a month after Barack Obama was elected the 44th president of the United States, the nation's economy is still going strong in its efforts to secure him the highest office in the land. Through its trifecta of moribund housing prices, a wildly fluctuating stock market, and an unprecedented credit crisis, the U.S. economy helped propel Obama past rival John McCain in polls leading up to the Nov. 4 election—a helpful boost the nation's financial system has since supplemented with the imminent collapse of the Big Three auto manufacturers and looming fears of a long-term depression. "Thanks to the disastrous efforts of our economy, Obama would be virtually unbeatable were he to run again in December or January," CNN political analyst Pat Harris said. "According to the most recent data, Obama's edge continues to grow among those who just lost their jobs and have no idea how they're going to feed their children, as well as among citizens who are freezing to death on the streets at this very moment." The outspoken U.S. economy, which has already been campaigning for months in Iceland and South America, reportedly plans to spend the next 10 to 15 years spreading its message to every single country on the globe.

Re: jackie kay – Fuck you

  21. 21

Basically what we voted for counted for nothing everyone knew even Harper knew he wouldnt get the majority of votes yet here he is fucking shit up for us Canadians. bravo prime minister bravo.

  22. 22

…maybe not in the best way, but lets hope they do it!

  23. 23

Basically I couple of weeks ago we took a vote and ended up with a minority government. The losers were sad that they lost, so they all ganged up to oust the winner. It's like McCain getting mad.. teaming up with a bunch of independants and kicking Barrack out three weeks into January. So sad to be Canadian right now.

  24. 24

    Re: jackie kay
WRe: _Alice_ – Alice to I need to kick me some husband ass for letty? what did I miss?
that weed on the last post, whoo hooo they knew how to enjoy life!!Who cares? We are next. communism is here and you fuks don't even realize.

  25. 25

ya i have no idea what's going on here. i live in canada, and i'm like "hmm?" i don't understand politics, but even i know that what's happening shouldn't be happening.

  26. 26

What do you Canada is so irrelevant? Besides the fact that canadians are hot, Canada is Americas greatest ally! And Not only ally but biggest trading partner!

  27. shiny says – reply to this

Because we have 4 major parties in Canada, and the party in power is a minority government, the other parties have essentially formed an alliance to take over government.
Personally, I think Harper has been making mistakes in leaps and bounds, and this is what happens when you play partisan politics and think you're the top gun in Parliament. I hate to think what he would have been like had he been able to put together a majority government.

  28. 28

Every so often, at the whim of the reigning Prime Minister (who is not the head of state, that's the Queen, who is toothless) an election is called. The leader of the party that wins a majority of seats becomes the new Prime Minister. Unlike the U.S. President, there is nothing stopping the PM from doing whatever they please. It's like electing a new dictator every 1 to 5 years (and PM's call elections then the polls indicate that they'll win).

So, in the last election he called (12 weeks ago), Harper didn't get a majority, as the sum of the numbers of MPs election from the 3 opposition parties added up to more than the number of his Conservative seats. Harper and his party still got the most, but not by much. So, instead of cooperating, Harper behaves like a dictator, and the 3 other parties form a coalition to toss him out and govern themselves (using the usual "no confidence motion" that would oust him). He beat them to the punch and dissolved Parliament before they could do it. That's what's up.

It could never happen in the U.S..

  29. 29

Re: jackie kay – Canada is relevent just like the US is relevent to Canada. What happens to one country affects the other. Hence the recession affecting Canada when it started in the US. Canada is in political turmoil and this is going to affect you too Americans!

  30. 30

What is going on is democracy. Less than 40% of Canada voted for this party (Conservatives) in the last election. The other 60% majority has lost confidence in the leader of the country.

  31. 31

omg i HATE stephen harper! and i'm allowed to say that too, cause i'm canadian. fuck i wish dion would have won. GO LIBERAL! or even better, GO GREEN! fuck harper, he's like a mini-bush

  32. 32

The Bloc is not a legitimate party. It operates at the national level but only exists in and represents Quebec. It's undemocratic. The Canadian people voted and they voted for Harper. That should be respected. It will backfire in the faces of the opposition.

Furthermore, the GG, in theory represents the queen of England but she does NOT answer to the queen or England, she answers to the PM and the state. The Canadian constitution states that the term "queen" is a personification of the state and the GG is therefore the symbolic "face" of the state. It has NOTHING to do with England.

  33. 33

The point is the Prime Minister of Canada was voted in by the people…..who are the opposition parties to just go behind our backs to kick him out? WE THE PEOPLE VOTED HIM IN.

  34. 34

    Re: mcmaster

well no that's not like it at all because it's the other way around. harper = mccain (or even better, bush) and… all the other parties = sensible (obama)

  35. 35

this is an assault on democracy…
coalitions of any kind, are a slap in the face to all canadians…
if people wanted the seperatists, NDP or liberal parties in power, they should have got out and voted…
only 52% of the canadian population voted…it is a DISGRACE
the conservatives won FAIR AND SQUARE
anyone that doesn't like them, then TOUGH SHIT

  36. 36

Re: jackie kay – You're a bitch. Canada is irrelevant? I guess we should pull our support from your army in Afghanistan eh?

  37. 37

Not all Quebecers are separatists, folks! I love both Quebec and Canada!

  38. 38

    Saved by the Queen

  39. 39

  40. 40

indeed. what IS up with that? glad you're finally bringing this to the attention of your readers.

  41. 41

Re: HesOverU&IntoME – The majority of Canada didn't vote for Harper FYI, that's why the conservatives have a MINORITY government. This coalition is what the majority of Canadians did vote for.

  42. midw says – reply to this

    Re: jackie kay

why don't you love your neighbor instead of hating on us? really is that how childish you are?

maybe its YOU that is irrelevant!

  43. 43

Re: jackie kay – actually Canada isnt irrelevant….why is it here in Canada we have American shit thrown down our throats??? I had to see shit about your damn election every fucking day, do you think I care?? no I dont, just as long as Bush is out things are good….its about time you guys took some of it too…do you even know anything about Canada?? Can u tell me why we learn about American History up here, but you guys no shit about us??? "uuh those Canadian say "eh", they live in igloos and let the gays get married" christ…maybe you should take up a course and learn about Canada…and how much better our country is than yours….did you know that your country is the only one in the free world that makes its people PAY for HEALTH CARE????? do you think thats alright???

Its relevant because our idiot prime minister jumped on the bandwaggon with your IDIOT PRESIDENT and now were all screwed

  44. 44

Alright let me explain this to Americans who don't understand

    1) How the Canadian system works. There are 308 seats in Canada's parliment up for grab during an election. The conservative government led by Harper won a total of 143 seats. This allowed him to have a minority government.

    2) Harper began introducing bills that were harmful to the parties of the Liberals, NDP and Bloc Québécois. These three combined have 163 seats. Eg. Harper tried to eliminate public funding for these parties so they would lose millions, among other things

    3) The Liberals, NDP and Bloc formed an alliance to overthrow the current Prime Minister. It has been done once previously.

    4) Harper knowing he would lose his job is doing everything he can to stop this from happening

  45. 45

  46. 46

Harper wishes he was president. Harper is only trying to save his own job at the expense of the rest of the country. At a time of economic crisis, he just SHUT DOWN OUR GOVERNMENT! Imagine if Bush or Obama did that? Nope, sorry, I know our economy is in the shitter, but I am going to shut down government to come up with a plan while the rest of your guys suffer. Merry Christmas! Jerk.

  47. 47

    avatar1 Is right.

I love this. Harper and his cronies have been running their government like they have a majority, which they don't. They are like the bullies in the school yard. Guess what, the picked on just stood up.

I didn't want the opposing parties getting their non confidence vote. But I'm still glad this happened.

Maybe now the Conservatives can learn some humility.

  48. 48

Stupid Harper!!!! He barely won that election, only had 34% of the votes and won a minority government but he still is trying to control everything!!!!! He knows it's going to happen and him putting it off is only going to piss people off!!!

  49. buck says – reply to this

What happens in Canada doesn't really matter. They haven't contributed anything to the world and for the most part Americans think of them along the same lines of the French. They can just sit up there in the cold and have the US protect their borders. The only thing we get in return is some okay beer, hockey (thanks alot), and mediocre ski resorts. I will say they do have some pretty hot strippers in Toronto.

  50. 50

this is not democracy, this is power politics and a blatant disregard for Canadian citizens. Neither side has shown any good judgment. The Canadian people need to make a bold statement to parliament. ENOUGH of this shit.

  51. 51

  52. 52

    Re: jackie kay
    Really? Are you kidding me?
Think about where a number of your natural resource imports come from the next time you say Canada is irrelevant. Good luck building a house when you have nothing to make it from - oh wait, that's not going to happen any time soon now is it.

  53. 53

Oh Im sorry,is this now a political forum or gossip blog? I mustve been misled by the fucking catch phrase of "Celebrity Juice,Not from Concentrate." It is fucking irrelevant, just like all the other politics on this site. THE ELECTION IS OVER SO FUCK ALL OF YOU!!!! Ofcourse economy is affected univerally by everyone,Im not a fucking dumbass.Shit, jump the fuck off me, Im fucking right you damn Canuck lovers!! SHit,all of you need to calm the fuck down, you sure are some self-righteoues uppity assholes for regular gossip site members. Re: jackie kay – you suck bitch

  58. 58

Yay! Good for Harper! Those a-hole separatists should not be able to take over our Government. They are not for Canada.. they are for Quebec only and the Canadians did not vote them in. God lord Trudeau would be rolling in his grave if he knew the Liberals were in bed with the separatists! At least now when parliament goes back in they can do the vote for the conservatives las bill.. and if it ends in a non confidence vote at least then Harper can call a new Election (now he can't, it has to be 90 days to call a new election).. THEN The Canadians can have their say! Thank the Governor General for Keeping Canada a free country!!

  59. 59

yeah its fucked up, our gov't is making itself even less usefull then they already are which is useless

  60. 60

    Re: supersally
Hey I'm from Quebec and I'm NOT a separatist! I agree with your comment. I hate the fact that some Canadians refer to Quebec residents as separatists when some of us are actually the total opposite!

What is going down right now is crazy, I never voted for Harper like 62% of the population, I just want him to leave Parliament, but then again Dion was shunned by the Liberals so it's not any better…

  61. 61

Personally I hate how this is affecting everything. We Quebecers are having a provincial election and all we talk about is what's going on at the federal level. There's been a lot of Quebec bashing this week because of the coalition, which I think is not justified. Harper has been arrogant, acting like a dictator. He wanted to cut the funding to political parties knowing damn well that he would make some of the parties bankrupt (like the Liberal party for instance).

Another federal election? I don't feel like it. And mostly I fear Harper wins this time with a majority.

  62. 62

Re: jackie kay – Canada has given us LettyB. 'Nuff said. Pfft….

  63. mcccc says – reply to this

The conservative sheep who think this is the end of democracy are idiots. This IS democracy. 60% of Canadians voted against Harper, but since there are so many left-leaning parties, the votes got split. The elected memebrs of the opposition party have every right to band together for what they believe is the best for the country. This isn't the US, Harper should not have unquestionable power.

The problem is our elections themselves need to be more democratic. How is it democratic for nearly 1,000,000 votes to be cast for the Green party yet they receive ZERO power.

  64. 64

    Re: harrybalsac – IT'S BACK BACON BALSAC..C'MON!!!!

  65. 65

    Re: _Alice_ – THANKS SWEETY!

  66. 66

Re: yoyoboozealot – this IS democracy idiot…no offence, but get educated before you say shit that makes no sense…we ELECTED these people in, 62% of us Canadians DID NOT vote Harper in, so our ELECTED officials we DID vote in are doing their job…this isn't democracy how again???

  67. SHSHA says – reply to this

THAT is the opposition acting like babies because they didn't get what they wanted. Now the liberal party and the NDP have formed a coalition with a friggin SEPARATIST party that doesn't even want to remain in CANADA!… It's crazy, that's what it is. Did my vote even count a few weeks back?

  68. 68

Re: buck – you suck too…ignorance is bliss they say, you'd know!!

  69. Kerrs says – reply to this

the problem is that Harper won the election, however, he only has 37% of Canadian voters….Unfortunately Dion is an idiot. And I am a Liberal voter. i can't help that the liberals chose the wrong leader, we didn't get a say in that. Anyway when the leader is not doing his job, soomeone at somepoint has to stand up to fix it. ANd now, Harper, fearing for his job, has shut down Parliament…trying to buy time. It leaves many of us shaking our heads.

  70. 70

harper is a coward and a liar! he deserves to get his ass kicked. 62% of the country supports other parties. the coalition government is more representative than harper. he is a jack-ass

  71. 71

Stephen Harper sucks at his job, but I would rather have him as Prime Minister, than shit head Stephane Dion, stupid quebecois who would work for quebec only and forget about all the other provinces.

  72. 72

and go on Fuckin hating, I just MADE this fucking post bitches.

  73. 73

I'm from Canada and this is such a terrible issue. I wish the government would stop being so childish and actually attempt to help Canadians, especially with the economy. Harper needs to man up and maybe take into consideration all of the other parties and work together. Even though he cancelled parliament till January it will still be a pressing issue and will make Canadians feel uneasy. I just hate politics.

  74. 74

    Re: Merrra – you're stupid
the won the election with a stronger minority government
    fair and square loser

  75. mcccc says – reply to this

Re: yoyoboozealot – Only 52% voted because the freaking election was ridiculous and POINTLESS. Harper broke his OWN freaking law in calling it. He wasted $300,000,000 just to gain 16 or 17 seats!

While I like that we have a multi-party system, giving us plenty of options, the ONLY reason the Conservatives won is that there are so many left-leaning parties. 64% of the vote got split between 4 left-leaning parties, leaving the ONLY conservative party with the most votes– that's what's effed up. I think the coalition is the most democratic thing that's been done.

  76. 76

what the hell is going on with canada right now? were in the middle of an economic crisis and harper just shuts down parliament? what the hell.

  77. 77

Harper is a tyran and a hypocrite. I have to give him something though. He is one hell of a politician because the first time he ran, he almost had me going but as soon as he was in power, he detroyed our international reputation and failed to follow through with most of his promises. He tryed to fool Quebec people in recongnizing that we are a nation but those were just words and he only wanted to get our votes which, by the way, did not work as most of quebec voted for Bloc quebecois in the last election. I am from quebec and I truly want to stay a part of Canada but with this prime misnister, it almost pushes me to wanna separate. Since Harper has been in power, he has refused to follow through with the Kyoto accord and he has put most of our budget in oil and the military. We used to be peace keepers, we are now at war.
Last night he spoke to the nation stating that a coalition including Bloc quebecois( a separatist party) could not exist. By the way, he has approached the Bloc in the past to acheive similar things (hypocrite). The Bloc is only supporting the coalition and is not going to govern. The liberal and the NPD will govern for our economy.
Anyways weither he stays in power or not, I hope he will help the country this time!!!!

  78. 78

It's absolutely ridiculous that we live in a democratic country and this is what it comes down to. All about Dion's lust for power, and Layton's urge to make as many deals as we can. Don't EVEN get me started on traitorous Bloc Quebecois. Harper's doing the right thing. The reality that everyone is missing/avoiding, is that our economy is soooo tied up in the US that it would be useless to release any kind of bailout plan before we see what Obama's is going to be. End of story. This was just a chance that the Opposition took to grab the power they so desperately want. Did I mention that Dion is STEPPING DOWN as leader of the Opposition BECAUSE he lost that last election? If that's not sour grapes, I don't know what is….
And that's my soapbox for the day!

  79. 79

Re: Wonderland – very true…the coalition is a coup d'etat that needs to be STOPPED

  80. 80

    Re: Mergers
Bottom line is the government and Parliament is freakin' corrupt and will do whatever they want.

  81. mcccc says – reply to this

Re: CountryGirl – What the hell? Just because Dion is Quebecois doesn't make him BLOC Quebecois. He's always indicated that he would work for the entire country. Racist against French people much?

Anyway, he's already stepped down and would only be the PM until someone else was chosen as Liberal leader.

  82. 82

Re: Mergers – You're clearly delusional. Harper is the one that suspended parliament, that had nothing to do with the opposition leaders. The opposition leaders mearly wanted to form a coallition, to stop Harper from doing crap like, oh, I don't know, getting rid of the right to strike? Getting rid of pay equity? Yeah, that's the crap our leader wants to do. Huh. And if the Governor General approves it, then in January we could either end up with a Coalition government, or we'll be sent back to the polls. It's all up to her.

  83. 83

Dion can't get over the fact that he lost the election and he wants to hunt down Harper and take his position has Prime Minister…. It's like McCain and Palin getting together again after they lost to take Obama down…. Stupid ass politics hate losing.

  84. 84

    Re: buck
Protect Canadian borders? lol From who?

  88. 88

Seriously people need to stop comparing Harper to Bush and everyone else to Obama because that is definitely not the case at all.

One it's undemocratic for the opposition to go behind the backs of the Canadian voters who VOTED IN HARPER for a Minority.

Two if people are so upset by Harper, then people should have gone to the polls and voted. The election was the lowest turnout in Canadian history. The fault only lies in the Canadian people who decided not to vote.

  89. 89

Re: Starlighter – Canada didn't vote for harper. Only 40% of Canadians voted for him. The other 60% didn't. 60% of Canadians don't want Harper in power. The Coalition gov't better represents the 60% of Canadians that hate the Conservatives.

And this is PERFECTLY LEGAL, might I add. This has always been a legal possibility.

  90. 90

Do Americans really think that Canada doesn't matter? We are one of top exports to the U.S. We are in Afghanistan cleaning up YOUR mess…we are peacekeepers, loved around the world. When you go overseas, or down south, everyone is so happy when they learn we are from Canada…unlike the way Americans are liked. GET OVER YOURSELVES!!!!

  91. mcccc says – reply to this

I'm so frustrated about what gets through to people who don't follow politics. The average Canadian only hears about how the coalition will "overthrow" the government, yet the are uninformed about the bullshit that Stephen Harper has pulled. It's the same reason people didn't vote for the Liberals in the election. People heard the word "carbon-tax" and ran away scared without even understanding WHAT IT IS.

Re: jackie kay – yea, MADE yourself look stupid..

  96. 96

    Re: jackie kay
I guess you care because you took the time to respond to this. Canada is relevant to the US just like the US is relevant to Canada - the economy is tanking in the US and it's affecting us - changes in our government will affect you as well.

Stephen Harper was voted in - barely - and MORE THAN HALF of Canada does not want him around. My worst nightmare would have been him winning a majority government and we are so lucky he didn't. While a Coalition government does go against everything democracy stands for, in this case it is appropriate and I would be thrilled if it works.

  97. 97

Re: mcccc – couldn't agree with you more :)

  98. 98

Okay - I am Canadian and I am from the WEST (this does make a difference because there is less of us but we all like the conservatives). Harper may not be the best choice for Canadians but he was the best choice we have. The Bloc want to seperate, the NDP caused loss of employment in Sask and BC for years, and Stephan Dion isn't even liked by his own party and they want him out!! As far Harper cutting there public funding - he was cutting his own as well. He may be making decisions but isnt' that what is needed in times like these - people to make decisions and not just piss time away while the economy worsens??? I think what is happening with coalition is absolutely ridiculous and I am standing beside Harper and the conservatives because at least they were trying to do something and they started in there own backyard.

  99. 99

Canadians are fuckin commy's! We should bomb them before they bomb us immediately! P.S. thank you perez for reminding the world canadians are losers good job!
