Coldplay Sued For Plagiarism

Filed under: Legal Matters > Coldplay

coldplay-hacks.jpg

Rock guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay for copyright infringement.

In a suit filed yesterday, Thursday, in Los Angeles federal court, Satriani claims that the band's hit song Viva La Vida contains "substantial original portions" of his 2004 instrumental If I Could Fly.

Satriani is seeking a jury trial, damages and "any and all profits" connected to the alleged plagiarism.

Neither side could be reached for comment.

We gave the tracks a listen and noticed some similarities, but it will be up to a jury to decide if Satriani will be making any belated dough off of Coldplay!

What a SHOCKER from a band that ripped off U2's whole act.

    24. 24

HA! Go, Satch! In response to those who have no clue about Satriani, he has plenty of money and plenty of fans and people who respect and appreciate his virtuoso talents. If he's suing, it's because they're thieves.

    28. 28

Whateva. After a while, everything starts to sound like something.

    29. 29

So OVER them, already…they DO rip other artists off… :(

    30. 30

Please…..hasbeen Satriani wants a paycheck. Boo fucking hoo! The guys a loser. What scrubbing the toilets at your local bar isn't earning you enough money Satriani?

    31. 31

Perez, If you check on youtube there is a video on there that plays both songs side by side..exactly the same…coldplay sucks ass!!

    32. 32

Satriani was ripped off for sure!

    33. 33

coldplay are an amazing band, best concert ive been to in ages…. how can you call the hacks?? they are at the top of their game. joe satriani just after $$$$$$$

    34. 34

      Joe who?

    35. 35

      Oh, snap!

    36. 36

Hahaha, wtf, Coldplay trying to rip off Joe Satriani? No way could they even come CLOSE to creating the music that Joe can — the song must be a pathetic attempt at music. Only Joe can play his music, and anyone else who tries fails. Coldplay sucks.

    37. 37

Re: Queen Tantrum - First Lady of Liverpool – Yeah, you took the words right out of my mouth! If he's suing, it's because they actually stole something from him. He could care less about the money.

    38. 38

I've heard this song before, on GH3. And i really dont see any similarities… Does anyone think so?

    39. 39

Re: Boobeast – Whats the link? I want to hear

    40. 40

who gives a shit about satriani?! dumb ass needs to quit trying to get a piece of the coldplay genius. outdated unoriginal fucker!

      41

I like Coldplay and I know Joe. He doesn't need the money, he lives quite comfortably - albeit normally and simply (for the norm, in our neihbourhood). He walks to the local market and does his own grocery shopping, takes the dog out, takes the kid to school and soccer practice - all without most people even knowing who he is. He is, also, one of the most "real" people you could ever meet. He would not instigate a lawsuit without merit.

    42. 42

THEY SUCK BIGTIME! Did you see them on SNL? I'm not a fan of Foo Fighters but damn, they rocked it love on SNL. But Coldplay sounded HORRIBLE live and they obviously need all that recording equipment to make themselves sound decent. A true test of a good band is how they sound live. THEY SUCK!

    43. 43

I just listened to both tunes and Satriani is totally correct… it is EXACTLY the same… im also a musician…. Coldplay totally sucks bigtime now more than ever

    44. Jim J says – reply to this

      44

The riff is similar but that's all. Joe should check his ego at the door because he has "appropriated" many riffs from other musicians as well.

    45. 45

I am soooo over Coldplay. The Killers are much better and sound great live unlike CP.

    46. royce says – reply to this

      46

Oh my God, shut up. The songs aren't alike. No one's even heard of that other dude and just because he's washed up he want to get some money out of Coldplay.

    47. 47

I listened to a rip of both clips on YouTube and totally sounds like Coldplay ripped him off!!!
I have no idea why they would rip off an established musician though so I'm frankly confused by the whole deal.

    48. 48

what ever happened to the indie group in NYC who posted the video that Viva la Vida ripped off their song?

    49. 49

That's what they get for writing such an unorigional melody. I'm surprised it hasn't happened to more of their songs. You forgot to mention this is the second artist who is suing Coldplay over Viva La Vida.

    50. 50

This whole, "IM GOING TO SUE COLDPLAY FOR 'PLAGIARISM'" thing is getting SO OLD. People need to get over themselves. Coldplay is great, they sell millions of records. Get the fuck over it.

    51. 51

similarities my ass - it's the same song

why does Chris Martin sound like he needs to blow his nose when he sings?

    52. 52

as much as i would like to hear it just to see if it was true or not thanks perez for NOT posting it because it just gives this guy more attention which might be his motive all along

    53. 53

I love Coldplay but I will say this…i've heard the Satriani song and it IS VERY MUCH LIKE Viva La Vida! It's too similar to deny there is a great possibility the song was copied

    54. 54

this is so ridiculous. songs sound similar sometimes. it just happen. this 'S' guy whatever his name is, is just some washed up half ass musician how listened to a some and got it in his head that they copied him. considering this band wrote songs like "sparks" "the scientist" and many more from their 4 albums and eps. im sorry but dont copy. music just sound similar sometimes. the "s"man is this discrediting coldplays art. he's just a wanker really.

    55. 55

      hahaha. that sucks!

    56. 56

I don't hear enough of a similarity to say that there is any case for plagiarism. Sounds like someone after a bit of publicity to me. It's rather convenient that the lawsuit has been filed just as the Grammy nominations have been announced and Coldplay are up for seven. The song's been out for ages now, so why suddenly file a lawsuit now?!

As for the accusations people on here are making about Coldplay ripping off Kraftwork, Coldplay got permission to use the music from Kraftwork directly. They also listed them in their music credits for 'Talk' and PAID them. So that just goes to show, when they use other people's music they pay up for it.

I hope Satriani doesn't get a penny! I really don't think he deserves it!

    57. 57

Don’t be fooled by the inevitable differences in orchestration: while the instruments and energy and other aspects are different, the _chord progression_ is _identical_: the only difference is that Constantin moves further down the “circle” than Coldplay does.

There. Case closed. Satriani should be ashamed of himself (so should Coldplay, by the way, for settling for such banal, commercially driven tripe as the song “Viva la Vida” after producing something as inspiring as XX-XY–but I digress).

Nobody “owns” the circle of fifths any more than they “own,” say, the most common jazz or blues progressions. Get over it, Satriani: Coldplay is successful because they are (when they’re not selling out) great musicians rather than plagiarists.

    58. 58

That is completely ridiculous of Coldplay, their melody sounds exactly the same. On another one of their songs part of it sounds like the intro to Swing, Swing by All American Rejects. That is the only other one I've noticed, but there's probably more!

    59. 59

Re: guilty of being white Joe Satriani is still alive?? Who would have thought. He should be glad if anyone even recognizes his music in this day and age.

With posts like this, no wonder people think Perez's site consists of a bunch of 13 year olds posting.. Joe has a massive following. And this day and age he still makes a ton of dough on his CDs and concerts. WITHOUT needing any MTV whoring. He's an actual MUSICIAN. A grammy winning one. He taught a slew of popular guitarists how to play. INCLUDING Steve Vai.

Joe is also a VERY nice soul. He wouldn't be doing this unless he was dead certain there was some ripping off involved. And he isn't doing it for the money. Joe's newest album Professor Satchifunkalus is a work of art. Not MTV-friendly power-candy pop that is known as Coldplay.

I am glad bands are getting sued for not having an original idea of their own.

      [re=3188979]Re: coldplay01 no freakin way!
Coldplay is too awesome and those of you who talk shit about them, go fuck yourselves[/re]

Not awesome enough to come up with their own ideas however. And about the free fuck offer. No thanks. Just because you're a coldplay fanboy doesn't mean they aren't talentless copying turds.

    61. 61

Re: LordKain Please…..hasbeen Satriani wants a paycheck. Boo fucking hoo! The guys a loser. What scrubbing the toilets at your local bar isn't earning you enough money Satriani?

#1 Satch probably has more money than Coldplay.
#2 Satch is still filling stadiums.
#3 Get your head out of MTV, it's not a good indicator of decent music. It just tells you what to think/like. While those of us that actually KNOW about music, understand the difference between candy-pop rock and real music.

Just because someone is screaming or talking tough, and there is a distorted guitar in it, doesn't mean that ColdPlay isn't just like the BackStreet Boys.

Because they have more in common with the BSB than they do a legit heavy band they are pretending to be.

    62. 62

Re: ProfessorA If he's suing, it's because they actually stole something from him. He could care less about the money.

Exactly. He doesn't need the money. Don't be surprised if he takes the money and gives it away to charity or something. Joe is a good guy, and his musical abilities and knowledge far outweigh the sum of Coldplay's parts.

Re: royce Oh my God, shut up. The songs aren't alike. No one's even heard of that other dude and just because he's washed up he want to get some money out of Coldplay

In other words, royce is 12 years old, and has posters of coldplay on his or her wall. :)

You can tell a person's age by their posting style and what they say.

I assure you, more people throughout this planet know Joe Satriani more than Coldplay.

Just because you are ignorant about any music other than what MTV plays doesn't mean everyone else is as ignorant musically as you are.

      Remember that.

    65. 65

Re: jarringxfly This whole, "IM GOING TO SUE COLDPLAY FOR 'PLAGIARISM'" thing is getting SO OLD. People need to get over themselves. Coldplay is great, they sell millions of records. Get the fuck over it.

What I get from this post. "It doesn't matter Coldplay are thieving magpies. I like them, and I am their biggest fan. So Because of that, they are allowed to steal whatever they want"

BTW The New Kids on the Block sold more albums than Coldplay ever has. Does that mean they are better than Coldplay?

And I suggest you do a search for album sales numbers for the GRAMMY award winning Surfing With the Alien, and Flying in a Blue Dream.

They are still being sold today. And Joe is still making great music. He has his OWN custom signature guitar made for him. He has for decades.

He has a amplifier named after him. As well as a slew of effects pedals.

Can't say the same about Coldlay. They are a flash in the pan. Their 15 minutes will be over soon. And Joe will continue to make great music.

    66. 66

Re: slave2house Satriani should be ashamed of himself

Because he is standing up for those ripping him off? Puhlease.

Obviously NON of you have ever written anything or done something and had someone else take it, put their spin on it and claim it their own.

It almost feels like a rape of sorts. Especially if you put a lot of time and emotion into whatever you are doing.

The key here is people. BE ORIGINAL. BE YOURSELF. DON'T FOLLOW TRENDS.

That is how Satriani got his name, and still today is known as one of the greatest musicians of all time.

It surely isn't because he has stole ideas off of other people.

And for those of you that don't k Satriani now, is KNOWN for putting odd chord shapes and patterns together that are not normally used. This is how I can tell when I hear a new song by Joe, that it is him. Obviously coldplay's guitarists listen to Joe (most guitar players do) and thought that no one in Joe's listening circle listened to Coldplay (and he is probably right) and wouldn't notice.

The thing is, Satriani usually listens to most all music that comes out.

Until it's happened to you I don't want to hear people saying "Oh quit whining" or "It's about the money" or "Joe just wants the spotlight"

Those of you saying such things are just showing that you know nothing about the guy. And probably are just Coldplay fanboys.

      Sad.
