Wisconsin's Solution To The Financial Crisis??

Milwaukee might soon be printing their own money.

For reals!

Residents from the neighborhoods of Riverwest and East Side will be meeting next Wednesday to discuss the possibility of printing their own money.

The cash could be used at neighborhood stores and local businesses.

As for the idea behind the cash printing, it seems the towns want to encourage local spending. They hope to boost the local economy due to the nationwide shitty recession.

One local community organizer said, "You have all these people who have local currency, and they're going to spend it at local stores. They can't spend it at the Wal-Mart or the Home Depot, but they can spend it at their local hardware store or their local grocery store."

So, what's the incentive for the residents?

One idea is to exchange money with a 10% increase. So exchanging $100 would give you $110 local Milwaukee dollars, allowing residents a 10% discount at the participating shops.

And all of this is completely legal. The only restrictions?

Communities can't create coins or bills resembling federal dollars.

    12. 12

I make my own money too. And?

    13. 13

Oh hellllll ya! I live on the east side and use to live in riverwest. There are a ton of awesome shops around here. I think it's a rad idea. Those two parts of Milwaukee are well known for being trendy and hip, so there are a ton of mom and pop joints around here.

    15. 15

How did I not hear about this? LOL. I live in Milwaukee County.

IDK. I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea, but I don't really see the point. I don't care either way as long as they don't force people to use the 'Milwaukee' currency lol.

You are Mojonna obsessed! Are you into Kaballah too, Perezito?

    19. 19

It's not about spending it elsewhere, it's about spending it at small businesses locally. And it's not like you'd trade ALL your money in, just what you spend adequately at small business. This is Forward thinking, not the greatest idea, but a possible solution. Wisconsin's motto is FORWARD btw… it's what we do.

    20. 20

I think it's a good idea…. it sounds like it would work like gift cards do.

    21. 21

I live in Milwaukee, and this would be really cool… an interesting way to try and save small business and compete against the big chains!

    22. 22

Shop at chikastuff.flyingcart.com, for really low priced American Apparel items. chikastuff.flyingcart.com

    23. 23

I like the idea…at least its a shot at something, right?

    24. 24

Remind you of anything. Like Hmmm,, THE CONFEDERACY!!

    25. 25

Are these people serious? It is going to fail in the end and then it's going to end up costing them more in the end anyway. They can only use this money in their own little city, so what is the point? Is this really legal? Doesn't it say in the constitution that only the federal government has the power to coin money?

    26. 26

i live on the east side of mke and used to live in riverwest - i probably spend about 90% of my money in these neighborhoods anyway so why not get a deal and keep it in the hood, sounds like a great idea. i hope they implement some type of debit card program as well. and so long as the bars accept our own money then we're all good to go:)

    27. 27

      BUY LOCAL!
      LOCAL FARMS!
      FUCK THE BIG CORPORATIONS!

    28. 28

I'm a proud Riverwesterner and have to say.. it's wonderful that my neighborhood is embracing this and trying to be proactive to better the current economic standings. Riverwest has lots of smaller, organic grocerers, coffee shops, convienient stores, pet stores, hardware shops, etc..(this list goes on and on… We're trying to get people to remember that not everything needs to come from a Walmart, Target, Publix or Pick n Save (basically big business.) The only way the economy here in America will get better is to remember the way it flurished post depression era - supporting local businesses owned by local people. Thanks to those in support of this idea! Remember, we the people are the ones with the power to make better for ourselves and generations to come. Cheers All! :) Lisa - Riverwest, Miltown, Wisco

    29. 29

people like "realsoccer49" and others who are not familiar w/these neighborhoods might not think it's a good idea, but those of us who live here, like myself, think it is and will use this money… it's not like we will not use real dollars in addition to this money for when venturing out of our hood - duh!

    30. 30

This is awesome… not just for the local economy of Milwaukee, but for our country. The idea of a localized money system is reminiscent of our history, the system that was in place as the US became a nation. Originally, all of our monies varied depending on location, which allowed for a healthy differential in value to spur competition and localism. While have too many monies is dangerous, having a system that can stand independent of the American dollar– which is regulated the unelected, unrestricted Federal Reserve– is good for everyone.

Of course, this could fail horribly, as many political ventures do. Or, it could really benefit the area and inspire other municipalities to do the same. Big business, while completely legal and accepted in the free market, can take over 'mom and pop' stores; let's not forget that small business are the best thing for our economy.

By the way, this method is in no way illegal. Why should the government control the money systems of a free people? We simply all agree to use the current system because of ease, acceptance, and ignorance– which, of course, gives much more power to the government than it deserves.

    31. 31

hey localuna (aka, my sister)… don't forget, it's not just riverwest but also the east side, which is about five times the size of riverwest, making it an even greater value to even more local businesses and the peeps who shop them:)

    32. 32

I'm thinking counterfeiters everywhere are salivating over the prospects. I feel bad for those small businesses who chose to participate because they will take it in the ass on this and that will certainly not help them at all in a sluggish economy.

    33. 33

      Detroit needs it's own money.

    34. 34

To reply to the people who have skepticism.. it's understandable, but, remember..if we let skepticism control us nothing would be tried. People have to be proactive and accountable. I guess we can only hope that the postive results will overpower the negative.
And MKEGIRL… (aka my sister). Yes, yes.. The eastside is also a part.. which is a much larger demographic than just Riverwest.. This is good shit yo! :) Tah tah

    35. 35

I'm assuming this new currency is being based on the dollar, which is a terrible idea– and it renders my previous opinion worthless. It should be based on something of tradeable worth other than the dollar– gold, silver, etc.

    36. 36

Congress would never pass this. Why you ask? Because it is much like the Articles of Confederation. One of the reasons why the Articles failed is because congress could not regulate commerce. Every state had their own money, and it couldn't be used anywhere else. While that may be good for local business, it sucks for trade value, and business that isn't local. If they want to draw people in, then put out coupons, have sales, but there is a reason why we have one currency for all the states.

    37. 37

fuck, i make my own money. hence all the LV i own……

    38. 38

great idea- get the money circulating back into the heart of the neighborhoods where it can benefit the people who live there. -

    39. 39

    40. 40

      I love cheeseheads!!!!

    41. 41

There's a BAD idea!! They're not the friggin government. How do they plan to handle it when some people make their own copies of this faux money??

    42. 42

They have the right idea! Fuck the Federal Reserve System.

Everyone calling them idiots are the true fucktards. When the economy and dollar bottom out, Wisconsin's independent money will probably with more than ours!

Learn how printing money works before you stupid-asses start talking shit.

    43. 43

fucking dumbasses, instead you might as well distribute lots of food stamps, they all will quickly learn that its worth nothing in the end, didn't work for any of the states during the civil war, won't work now!

    44. 44

I live in Riverwest, and there are so many local shops, restaurants and bars that it would be great to save the 10% for staying in the neighborhood.

    45. 45

Ey, you ids from other states don't realize all of your money is going to the big guys… either that or you don't give a damn about your city's roots. Wisconsin's obviously the best for thinking of this idea.
      Fck corporate

    46. 46

this is nothing new…basically it's a 10% discount program, in exchange for giving business to local shops

    47. 47

It actually works…a town in NJ that I work in does this and people can buy the towns money and it is good at the stores and resturants in the town…it builds the local businesses. People always want to feel they are getting something for free, so if you spend $50 to buy the towns cash and get $60 in the town cash back, its like getting free money. It really works.

    48. 48

      fuck yeahhh milwaukee :)

    49. 49

      The Constitution
      Article 1
      Section 10:

"Section 10. No state shall enter into any treaty, alliance, or confederation; grant letters of marque and reprisal; coin money; emit bills of credit; make anything but gold and silver coin a tender in payment of debts; pass any bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law impairing the obligation of contracts, or grant any title of nobility. "

FYI: The Constitution is the SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND therefore this is illegal no matter what.

    50. 50

I think that is a Wonderful idea! The only problem with it is that the US relies on the Money we purchase from the Federal Reserve (which is a private bank) and all of the land in the USA is owned by the government (not the people who pay for it) so no matter weather you support your own local economy with the homemade bills, local businesses would still own our horrible government taxes on the land (not to mention utilitie bills and such)… Kind of silly that we escaped from Europe partly because we couldn't own land (alodial title) and now the same shit is going on in America… cest la vie

      52

I like this idea because it's creative. The people get more bang for their buck and their local businesses get the support they so desperately need. Win-Win.

    53. 53

      This is a good start.

Capitalism will be the downfall of this country.

If we can get more communities with the same ideas — self-sufficient communities, there will be no recession. (No nation-wide recession anyway.) We are the united states… this does not mean we all need to be under the same exact currency system.

      Maybe there is hope.

    54. 54

      Re: susiec89
The money we get from the FED is illegal anyway… "anything but gold and silver coin a tender in payment of debts" Do you think that our money is backed by gold? It isn't. The money we use is printed out of thin air by the Federal Reserve Bank and sold to us with interest. You really ought to know what the hell you are talking about before you start quoting the Constitution of the United States of America… You moron.

    55. 55

      Hey Perez !!!!

      i love that !!
you are seriously so creative (as if you don't know)
but I especially love! the way you draw the crowns :)
I love Madonna on that dollar bill
And why can't her Madgesty be on it in real life??
      i wonder
Perez you make every day a happy day
      YAY for Perez's ART
      and for her Highness :)

    56. 56

Anyone who thinks this is a good idea clearly has absolutely no understanding of how an economy functions. What the hell are these businesses going to do when they give away their entire inventory and get nothing but monopoly dollars in exchange for it? Their suppliers aren't going to accept Milwaukee dollars as payment for more inventory..their only option is to trade the money in, which takes additional effort and results in a 10% loss at best. A 10% loss every single time they sell out their inventory..do you really think the increase in local shopping will be able to cover that? This HAS to be coming from some stupid liberal group.

    57. 57

this sounds like a fantastic idear

    58. 58

i would do it if it was 30% 30 extra bucks is an incentive

I am from rawlins wyo and we already have our own money in carbon county lol

    60. 60

OKAY FOR YOU DUMB IDIOTS THAT THINK THIS IS A BAD IDEA………THIS IS A GREAT IDEA BECAUSE IF YOU USE THIS MONEY AT A NEIGHBORHOOD SMALL BUSINESS STORE, THEN YOU ARE DOING A GREAT SERVICE FOR YOUR COMMUNITY! I LIVE HERE, SO IT WOULD BE A GREAT IDEA TO HELP OUT STRUGGLING BUSINESS!! IF YOU DON'T LIVE IN MILWAUKEE OR NEAR MILWAUKEE PLEASE KEEP UR MOUTH SHUT! ITS DOESN'T AFFECT YOU……SO MIND UR BUSINESS………(RENFAMOUS, HAZELEYES_05)

It's so frustrating when people make snap judgments without doing any research (read: everybody who said this was a stupid idea in their posts). This is actually called a Local Economic Trading System (LETS) and is an accepted method of community economic development. The US has SEVERAL of these systems, with the largest being in Ithica, NY. You just use your Local$ rather than regular $ at local businesses (who have signed up and agreed). It not only helps keep small businesses in business, but it stops the outflow of money from small centers to major centers. It's a proven method to help stimulate local economies.

Please look around and do some research before you're quick to make a comment on something you clearly don't understand or know nothing about.

    63. 63

I live in Milw. and I've never heard this either…I think this article is BULLSHIT! Otherwise…I would have heard about it by now…

    65. 65

now this is going to kill the us economy…..very selfish on wisconsins part

    66. 66

So WHERE does the $100 in US currency go to after I exchange it for the 110 in monopoly bucks??
      Maybe I missed that part.

according to my poly sci class… i thought a state printing their own currency is illegal
