A LARGE family could be a sign of a large … intellect.
British boffins have discovered that brainy men produce the best quality sperm.
After checking data collected from 425 US soldiers, a team from the Institute of Psychiatry discovered that those with the highest scores on intelligence test also had high sperm counts and their sperm were good swimmers - both crucial for fertility.
Lead researcher Dr Rosalind Arden said: "This does not mean that men who prefer Play-Doh to Plato always have poor sperm.
"But our results do support the theoretically important 'fitness factor' idea. "
Good nutrition and maintaining a healthy weight have been shown to improve fertility. While bad habits such as smoking and boozing could jeopardise it.
Dr Allan Pacey, Senior Lecturer in Andrology, University of Sheffield, says the lastest findings don't mean playing Sundoku will stimulate your sperm.
He says "It probably says more about the co-development of brain and testicles when the man was in his mother’s womb, and therefore how well they both function in adult life."
