Coldplay Responds To Plagiarism Accusations
In response to the accusations of rock guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani that Coldplay ripped him off with their hit single Viva La Vida, the band had this to say on their website:
With the greatest possible respect to Joe Satriani, we have now unfortunately found it necessary to respond publicly to his allegations. If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him. Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write the song Viva La Vida. We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavours. Coldplay.

They have similarities in a small part of the melody but that's it. I don't agree with him that it largely his original song. He needs to get over himself.
When Coldplay sampled Kraftwork in their song 'Talk' they got permission and PAID for using it. They don't need to steal music. I hope it gets laughed out of court.

Mr Rock & Roll by Amy McDonald (Scottish musician) has a similar sound to "Lovers in Japan" from Cold Play's Viva La Vida. Amy's CD (wicked by the way!) came out in 2007 on Melodramatic Records Limited.
Sounds like Cold Play looks to others for their inspiration.

I think it's a coincidence becuase I doubt those pansys listen to Satriani anyway. The Coldplay song sounds much better with the Satriani song superimposed over the top. Lookup Youtube viva la vida satriani.
it's not really a take that situation.. George Harrison was sued for copyright infringement over his song "My Sweet Lord," because of its surface similarity to the 1963 Chiffons single "He's So Fine". Harrison denied deliberately stealing the song, but he lost the resulting court case in 1976. In the ruling, the court accepted the possibility that Harrison had "subconsciously copied" the Chiffons' melody as the basis for his own song.
Basically Coldplay can still really be screwed in this one even if they didn't mean to copy the song.
Sure there are songs that sound similar, but holy hell, they blatantly copied that song!
Listen to his video where they play Satriani's right over Coldplay's, and they are exactly alike.
The evidence is fairly damning. I've heard both pieces played at the same time and it is quite a "remarkable coincidence". I call bullshit on ColdPlay. I dont recall the exact date, but this has been an ongoing argument by Satriani since the song was showcased in an Apple ad and only now, after the song has been such a huge hit, ColdPlay shrug it off - like this?!? Tut tut, ColdPlay - shame on you. Epic fail….
I heard samples of both songs and they sound WAY too alike! I think Coldplay should get their egotistical heads out of their asses, suck it up and apologize to Mr. Satriani ( and pay the man)!
wow, the news has already been out for MONTHS. (go look it up on youtube there is this video posted since june.) anyways it's sad to say that this Satriani is trying to earn money when he can just record another album. I've heard both the songs back to back. This guys song DEF 100% has the EXACT same cord as Coldplays. Maybe one of them heard it before and it just stuck in their heads and didn't even realize what they were doing. Come on, all these years music has been around and no one ever has anything similar, ever, to other artists? You may not be aware of this, but another of Coldplay's songs - Talk - sounds suspiciously like Kraftwerk's Computer Love. Was it legitimately sampled? Hmm.. they probably thought they could get away with using the melody from a relatively obscure band.
