Rowling Outselling The Rest

jk-moneyyyy.jpg

As we mentioned earlier this month, JK Rowling's latest book, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, was set to hit the market with a big splash.

And it has.

Rowling's book has already become the fastest-selling book of the year!

It's already sold five times as many copies in its first few days out as its nearest competitor, Guinness World Records 2008.

The book, which Rowling originally didn't even intend for publication, is a 109 page collection of short stories.

It sold 367,625 copies in the first three days after publication on December 4th. As for Guinness, it only sold 73,000 over the same period.

The charts editor at The Bookseller magazine, said, "None of the other big releases managed to get near the sales figure for Beedle the Bard. I would be very surprised if it is not Christmas number one, but it's not a dead cert."

Even Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series only sold 32,000 in six days.

It's safe to say Rowling is a guaranteed big seller.

Somehow we bet she'll have another book out in time for the holidays next year.

  3. 3

thus proof, Twilight will never reach Harry Potter success. Suck on that (no pun intended)

  4. 4

this is so stupid, that all these people go crazy over these childrens books..

  5. 5

What are you talking about, the lastest Twilight book, Breaking Dawn sold 1.3 million copies the first day. You even had a page about it.

  6. 6

well people really didnt even know who stephenie was til a couple of months ago when twilight skyrocketed

  7. 7

    good for her
    all proceeds go to charity.

stephenie myer would probably keep the money to buy teenage girls attention.

  8. 8

I like Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series but JK Rowling is the obviously the better writer.

  9. 9

    gay!!!

  10. 10

Yay for my fellow (former) citizen of Edinburgh!

  11. 11

please don't post incorrect information perez. breaking dawn, the last book in the twilight series sold 1.3 million in ONE DAY. it's a fact. not only 32,000 in six days. your info is incorrect.

  12. 12

Hey JK, are you looking for a house boy? I give great massages and have a very long tongue.

  13. 13

Too high up for a decent TF.

  14. 14

as much as i love harry potter
i need to point out that breaking dawn sold OVER ONE MILLION COPIES IN ONE DAY

  15. 15

This is so amazing b/c not only was the book fantastic. All these proceeds will go to the charity that she has chosen…Big time KUDOS to Ms. JKR aNd her absolutely amazing world of HARRY POTTER!

  16. 16

GOOD FOR HER….SHE KEEPS KIDS READING…EVEN BIG KIDS LIKE ME.

  17. 17

This book was set to be a massive success the second she decided to publish it for the public at large. As I've said in the past - the book was originally written as a gift to the 6 people JK credits as supporting her through her Potter journey.
The smaller sale price (only AUD$10.95) would also contribute to higher unit sales.
But why even compare Potter and Twilight - two very talented authors with two very different stories. You may as well compare Anne Rice to JK - makes just as much sense.

  18. 18

yay go rowlingggg!!!I love her and her books!Twilight/Meyer can't compete no offense! This lady has magic!

  19. 19

    harry potter > twilight !
    love them both though…

    It's just for the UK.

  21. 21

    yeah!!!!!!

    HARRY POTTER ROCKS!!!
    TWILIGHT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. 22

Perez is making it sound like JK is in it for the money, but I think he needs someone to do the research because proceeds are going to charity. And JK Rowling is a better writer than stephenie the Twilight books are good, but I don't know there is something lacking I feel like twilight could have been better. I think maybe she had too many road blocks they taught us in my writing courses that when your loosing focus in a story to change the point of view and since she admits to doing that I would say there were some problems in her story and JK Rowling never had to do that her characters were well rounded…..although the ending could have been better considering 7 books later and it ends happily ever after freaky…

  23. 23

Re: topper – you did it again

  24. 24

GOOD FOR HER. A WONDERFUL RAGS TO RICHES STORY. GO JOANNE!

  25. 25

You really cannot compare the two. I am fans of both but harry potter has been out for like 10 years prior to twilight so of course its going to have sold more. And duh her book did good selling. I mean she has built a fan base that will probably buy anything she writes so i doubt she will ever not have a best selling book.

  26. 26

Perez, Why do you act like it was some big marketing scheme that she had the book out in time for the holidays? ALL of the Beedle the Bard proceeds go to charity. She's not making a dime.

  27. 27

    nice titties :)

  28. 28

    PEREZ, ARE YOU RETARDED?

STEPHENIE MEYER'S "Breaking Dawn", the last book in the Twilight series, sold over ONE MILLION COPIES IN IT'S FIRST DAY!!!!! That's waaay over JK's book, and in a third of the time! So, what the hell are you spouting!? Bullshit, it sounds like. You obviously don't know your facts straight.

  29. 29

love harry potter and twilight :)

    30

    Yay J.K. Rowling!

    Re: lishlovesrpattz
It still won't beat Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows selling 11 million copies on the first day or Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince selling 9 million copies on the first day…

  32. 32

    i still prefer stephenie meyer.
i don't like the way jk writes.

  33. 33

    PEREZ

Please mention that all proceeds go to charity! I have seen a few stories on this book on your page, but you never mention it.

  34. 34

    Rowling >Meyer.

Don't even compare the 2. Rowling's books sell because they are good, she is not a money grabbing individual- Half the proceeds are going to charity, get it right.

  35. 35

WHOO! J.K. Rowling is SO much better than Stephenie Meyer. Stephenie Meyer needs to learn how to write…

  36. 36

    she is totally overrated!

  37. 37

Re: WildOrchid1298 – Good point, i bet that at the end of the year JK gave wayyyy more to charity than skanky Brangelina and she never asks press or paps to be there when she is doing good… Piggy needs to get better informed!

  38. 38

    Sweet! You go girl! ^_^
    (Twilight sucks major ass!)

  39. 39

the only reason her book sold more then twilight is because no one had read twilight so far and alll the harry potter books have been out for a long time
    TWILIGHT IS BETTER

  40. 40

Lol, wow. "Breaking Dawn" sold 1.3 million copies opening day!!1!1!!!one!11! That's about 1/10 of what "Deathly Hallows" sold on its opening day. Plus, every Harry Potter novel besides Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone has sold more than Breaking Dawn on its first day. More than half of the people who read Twilight now had never even heard of the series before "Eclipse" came out; they all just jumped on the bandwagon and have no real passion for the story, only the "hot guys." I'm sorry, how much has Stephenie donated to charity? Oh, that's right, not a single cent that she's earned from her work.
