No Mo' Mexico for del Torro
Director Guillermo del Torro won't be making another film in Mexico any time soon.
The Hellboy director was recently on the red carpet at a special Mexico City showing of the film Rudo y Cursi, which he co-produced. And while he was there, he told reporters that he would likely never make another film in Mexico again.
It turns out that his father was kidnapped in Mexico 10 years ago which still makes del Torro fear for his safety too much to return to Mexico for long.
Thankfully his father was released, though the family reported they received death threats for a while after.
As for del Torro, he says he doesn't feel safe directing in Mexico because his daily schedule and routine become too public.
He added, "Not all of the people who participated in the kidnapping were captured." And described his situation as being a "forced exile."
Mexico has one of the highest kidnapping rates in the world! However, their government says abductions have gone down due to a new national security accord to battle crime which passed in August. They claim there's only about 72 kidnappings a month now.
That's still 72 too many!
But accurate and reliable date is hard to gather since a lot of kidnappings go unreported because of the fear of police involvement.
The nonprofit Citizens' Institute for Crime Studies estimates that the real kidnapping rate is actually at about 500 per month!!!!

Del Toro is a genius. I adored the brilliant, brilliant Pan's Labyrinth and while I never saw Hellboy, saw another great Del Toro movie…The Devil's Backbone??? Thought Pan's Labyrinth was made in Mexico???? Whatever, his safety is most important.

I've lived in Mexico city, and yes I am a nobody, but… I'd never say something as stupid as "I can't deal with it anymore". "I'm afraid of my own shadow" what the fuck? seriously. There are millions and millions of people that are able to live in that city, and yes they complain, but they just carry on with their lives.
You just have to be careful ,that's the thing, you get assaulted easily, they take your purse, they take your money and your credit card, even your car, but they don't kidnap you just because. :/

I´m a Mexican citizen and lived and worked legally in the US for several years (yes, I paid very high taxes, being single,childless and extremely well paid). Knowing that my country is going through a difficult phase just made me return earlier. I missed it so much! Mexico City, along with Berlin and London, are unsafe, fun and absolutely wonderful places to live in. NOBODY SCARES ME…well, only those who want to live in fear….AND NOBODY TELLS ME HOW TO LIVE MY LIFE, but that is a luxury that Mr. Del Toro doesn´t have. I feel sorry for Memo…all that work and he´s not able to enjoy his homeland.

Haika9691 - As a matter of fact I am well aware of life in Mexico city, even though I left the city 6 months ago. And to my surprise, YES, things got a little bit crazier in there in such short time! you know, Mouriño, and then the Zetas going to Veracruz. And that walk of peace all over Mx city.
My point was that you just have to be more careful.
I'm not saying it doesn't ever happen, it does sometimes. Sometimes they kidnap random people, but the peope that do that are not the big powerful bands or cartels.
But MOST of the cases are just because of drug trafficking/poweful or rich relatives. And then, I think most of the kidnapping, murders, and stuff are on the NORTH of the country, the numbers do not only show the capital's kidnapping rates.
However, I don't know where to base my judgement, but you seem to be more educated than that radcliffe fan, who is scared even of her shadow.

My husband used to do surf trips in Baja quite a bit w/ friends. I put my foot down w/in the last year after all the reports of violence and innocent bystanders being killed by drug lords and their minions. It's not worth it.

Mexico sucks
Yes Mexico has a high kidnapping rate, yes some places are dangerous, yes drug cartels and the government are fighting and of course people are being killed. But most of the time kidnappings are either of politicos or shady rich people. I don't care if they say they're decent if it were true it would happen to a majority of middle class people here. Cartels are of course a big problem but that would lessen if the States weren't the consumers of all that dope and of course Mexico wasn't the bridge to get there.
And in every single city there are neighborhoods where you don't want to be at.

Once upon a time, Mexico welcomed talent like the film director Luis Bunuel and there was a real renaissance in the Mexican cinema. But with this current state of violence and lawlessness, Mexican articts will flee for safer host countries.
This is tragic. The brain-drain is sweeping, and soon there will be an army of exiles in Spain, the U.S., maybe even Cuba, and elsewhere. In fact, some indications are that it has already happened.
