He is simply making the point that the Constitution should not ban or endorse anything that deals with American's private and personal lives or matters of the heart. There are a lot of critical thinkers (gay and otherwise) who don't support gay marriage. THIS DOES NOT MEAN they support legislation preventing gay people from getting married. If you'd really stop and think about what he, and many other more brilliant people like myself, said, it comes down to an issue between separation of church and state and to the government staying out of private matters. Personally, I have publicly said that marriage shouldn't be granted by the government TO ANYONE, since it's a religious institution. EVERYONE should be granted civil unions (gay and straight) that carry the same rights. Then, if people want to go beyond that to get a religious marriage of their own choosing (Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or otherwise) then that's their prerogative. What don't we stop being followers and just think critically for a change?!?

This is why Canada has had legal gay marriage for a while now although the fight against it radically changed the federal Conservative Party. His statement is confusing because he doesn't understand how reality relates to ideals or what marriage is. Marriage is a legal as well as sociocultural act. It affords the participants unique rights in terms of taxation, in the courts and in terms of succession. A ban against same sex marriage is clearly an attempt to punish folks who have chosen a less than conventionally accepted lifestyle. If he was thinking clearly he would have said he doesn't support any restrictions on marriages; polygamist, bestial, with a girl made of Lego. It's interesting to see who thinks he speaks for them, equally confused people.

All Wainwright's saying is the government shouldn't have the right to legislate marriage and love. He doesn't think ANYONE should have a "legal right" to be married or that the government should have anything to do with our personal lives, so long as no one's getting hurt. He DOES support gay marriage. Ideally, he'd like to see marriage removed from government affairs though as it's a personal issue.
I think calling him an idiot was hasty, extreme and unfair. Rufus is a great person. I've had the pleasure of playing with him a couple times and I love him.

You do not equate human love with loving a dog. That is so ignorant that I can't even believe it. Anybody that can love deserves to have their love recognized. They also deserve to have the same legal rights that conventional couples have. Most Gay couples that I know have way longer relationships than Straight couples that I know. But, wait? If marriage is in the mix, will that hold?
You guys seem to be missing the point. The anti-gay people are always saying things like "If we let gays have these rights then pretty soon people will want to marry children or their pets, etc." By announcing he's gay then making a remark like "if you want to marry a dog, why don’t you go ahead and marry a dog" he's just making their point for them.
