The Brits love them some musicals! And so do we!

The film adaptation of Mamma Mia! has become the biggest hit EVER at the British box office.

The musical has made over $95 million just at the UK box office alone since its release on July 18th.

That's more than any of the Harry Potter movies or even Titanic brought in.

Insane!

As for worldwide, the movie has made over $571 million.

David Kosse, the president of Universal Pictures International, said “Mamma Mia! is pure escapism, proving a fun and inexpensive way to forget about the state of the economy for a couple of hours."

Who are you kidding?

People just love musicals!

Kosse added, “For Mamma Mia! to make history in this way and beat Titanic, which has held the record in the UK since 1998, is truly phenomenal. This film has exceeded our expectations and delighted audiences around the world since it opened in July.”

In fact, Mamma Mia! has become the most popular film of the year in 15 countries already.

Talk about making a mark globally.

There better be a sequel!

It came out on DVD today and I went to a store to buy it for my daughter for Christmas and they were SOLD OUT! I went to another store and they had only about 10 left. The guy said that before they opened they had over 200 of them. It's going to be a huge seller on DVD. This is not just a great musical but a great mother/daughter film. I took my daughter to see it and we sobbed like babies during, "Slipping through my fingers." Beautiful film!

I have no real opinion on this movie but is it just me or was the makeup job horrendous? Actually they look like their not wearing makeup. Their skin is red and blotchy. Who ever did the makeup does not know how to do makeup for outdoor shots.

The acting was great in this movie. I can honestly say only one cast member had a good voice.

    In otherwords, the singing sucked.

  17. 17

    Best movie EVER!!!

  18. 18

Sorry, but when I watch a musical I expect people to be able to sing. Amanda and Dominic were wonderful, but the movie as a whole was just bad. And I'm suppose to believe Streep as a 40 something single mom? My imagination isn't that great.

    Mamma Mia was horrific.
It had the makings of a great film, a great cast, gorgeous settings and fabulous music but it just fell flat for me and everyone I know who saw it. Keep in mind, I love musicals.
Very disappointing to me, surprising it did so well too.

    Yay! Go Universal (and DK)!

  21. 21

I freaking love Mamma Mia! I saw it on Broadway and this was an amazing transition! DVD came out today!

  22. 22

The movie was pretty boring. The musical should be great, cos it's live and everything, but if there were no musical, the movie would be boring and pointless with a bad story…

  23. 23

I just finished watching it on blu-ray! Love it!

Hasn't Titanic made around $1.8 BILLION worldwide?

  27. 27

The sad thing is, it's a horrible movie. The singing is horribly bad from most parties, and the casting is too old. It could have been made 10x better!!!

It's a great musical, I saw it on stage in Toronto at the Royal Alex… the movie just doesn't compare at all!

  28. 28

    seriously?
I saw the play live, and it was AMAZING.
    the movie fell flat though.
just hearing meryl and pierce and other cast members strain so hard to sing a decent note, was awful.
ABBA deserves way better talent than that!

WAIT A MINUTE! Are my eyes deceiving me, or is that Agnetha and Frida in that picture, actually standing side by side with the Mamma Mia cast???

    31

This doesn't interest me at all. Not the movie or the musical… next one.

  32. 32

Groan dear God why.Such crap. What is wrong with people that they need such rubbish escapism.?

  33. 33

This movie was a piece of shit and I LOVE ABBA! It almost, ALMOST raped my beloved memories of Abba music.

  34. 34

I've actually never seen this movie but it's definitely making me wanna see it now. I guess other countries have a bit more cheer than we do. The movies with violence and what not make it big here. I wonder what it says about our country ;)

  36. 36

It's because it's a really good movie, the song are very beautiful and colin firth so HOT

  37. 37

Mama Mia my ass…I thought the Brits had better taste

  38. 38

  39. 39

It's not the movie. It's the music.
