Jim Carrey, Smarter Than We Thought

Filed under: Canadialand > Love Line > Jim Carrey > Jenny McCarthy

wenn2211196.jpg

Jim Carrey was on Larry King Live this week, and the outspoken comedian opened up about his private life and his longtime battle with depression.

Of note, he warned about the hazards of using anti-depressants like Prozac for a long period of time.

Carrey said, "At the risk of like opening up the whole Tom Cruise Prozac argument, you know, I don't disagree in many ways. I think Prozac and things like that are very valuable to people for short periods of time. But I believe if you're on them for an extended period of time, you never get to the problem. You never get to see what the problem is, because everything is just kind of OK. And so, you don't deal. And people deal when they get desperate."

That's why people should seek psychiatric help and talk to a therapist on an ongoing basis.

Carrey says - for him - the solution is "Supplements. It is vitamins. But it's also certain elements of the brain like Tyrosine and hydroxytryptophan that they're treating depression with now. It is a natural substance that's in your brain."

We have to give him credit, at least he sounds a lot smarter than Cruise did when he tried to campaign against pills. Carrey adds, "I'm going to talk a lot about it in the near future." Wonder what he has in mind.

As for his current love life, he says Jenny McCarthy helps him a lot. Though he has no current plans to get married. Adding, "I love Jenny very much, and we have a great relationship. And we've both been married a couple times. I like it the way it is, and I think she likes it the way it is."

…taurine is good for manic depression and it's natural. He should drink some of those Boo Koo's or other energy drinks. A lot of major stars suffer from things that money can't heal. It's a freaking shame.

Jim carrey's expiration date ran out in 2003.

BUT NOT ALWAYS…ESPECIALLY IF YOUR NOT SUPERFICIAL
    OR MORALLY CHALLENGED.

  30. 30

I strongly agree with Jim on this one and I know its true because I know somebody who is taking Cymbalta to treat depression. Although depression is a problem that many people face a pill itself is not the cure. The person I know sees doesn't really go to therapy that often but he's been taking those pills for 2 years!!! The only reason he's taking them is because he cheated on his wife therefore their excuse was that he was depressed…wft? Like I said life is not easy for anyone and you have to face your problems some day. Those pills could really have some bad side effects anyway.

  31. 31

Jenny and him are both such spazzes, they are perfect for each other. I love them both! But it does go to show how overly funny people typically have deeper issues e.i. belushi and farley.

  32. 32

Re: orchidgirl – GAY! GODDAMN IT! DO YOU LIVE UNDER A ROCK!

  33. 33

I say keep it natural with herb….

  34. 34

Oh good article. I've been taking 5-HTP and L-Theanine and it's working for me!

  35. 35

    .
    .
    He is absolutely right.
Tyrosine and 5-HTP ( Hydrotryptophan) are fantastic.

  36. MP says – reply to this

    36

I respectfully disagree with Mr. Carey. I think some people have a certain brain chemistry that requires life long medication. I think his comments do a disservice to those people. That said, I think all possible treatments should be explored, from western to eastern and everything in between. I just wish he would say that not all depression stems from "issues." Depression is a serious illness…speak with your doctor if you're suffering, don't listen to celebrities who, often times, don't fully understand the issue.

  37. 37

    i likke his scarf

  39. 39

CAUTION! Do NOT take advice from Perez Hilton regarding your mental stability and general well being. he is clearly deranged and anything he could offer you to try and make yourself a better person is TOTALLY worthless. He should be embarrassed that he actually offers an opinion concerning anything to do with the subject whatsoever. No amount of therapy or pills can help Perez and really we must all know that we look here out of amazement just like when you drive by a traffic accident. While you are observing the oddity of it all do not be caught off guard and actually take advise from a freak in the circus tent.

  40. 40

I was so impressed by his intelligence as well as grace as a human. I like his articulating the use of humor as well as serios material to help describe the human condition.

  42. 42

We have been showing our kids old In Living Color with Jim Carey. FUCKING BRILLIANT!

  43. 43

I've always like Jim! Going to see his new movie too. Oh, yes!

  44. 44

Hey, Sweetpiece I am seeing those in re-runs. Funny as hell. I love Fire Bill. Jim was the heart and soul of that show. Jennifer was not too bad as a dancer.

The party was great btw! Happy Holidays sweetie!
    XO!

Re: Dirty old man – FUCKER I'LL CUT YOUR ASS UP CANADIAN STYLE!!!!

  47. 47

the problem is that we are too judgemental. todays society thinks the ideal should be the norm. thats very depressing right there. the drugs can numb that of course, and there are chemical imbalances also my own father had one. but when you try to reach ideal as norm? well, you know a c is average right? but if drop below an a avg you are deemed below par?? and given pills for the depression??? we can't all be ideal, and we can't all take pills to fix that

  48. 48

WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE WHO ARE BORN WITH CLINICAL DEPRESSION WHO NEED ANTI-DEPRESSANTS TO LIVE A NORMAL LIFE?! IF YOUR DEPRESSION IS NOT A SERIOUS CLINICAL ISSUE, THEN HE HAS A POINT FOR THOSE PEOPLE. BUT FOR MANY OF US, STOPPING MEDICATION IS AN IMPOSSIBILITY! YOUR WOULDN'T TELL SOMEONE WITH A HEART CONDITION TO JUST RELY ON VITAMINS AND STOP MEDICATION! CLINICAL DEPRESSION IS A SERIOUS, MEDICAL CONDITION! SPEAK FOR YOURSELF, JIM!

  49. 49

What guys like Carrey don't point out is that very few of these supplements are covered by health insurance, and they can cost as much as $300 a month for the treatments he's talking about. People who can afford a $35 copay can't always afford a $300 purchase of supplements. And Jenny McCarthy is an idiot with her "vaccinations are bad" speeches. But then, that's what happens when people start listening to a nude model, she starts thinking she's competent in something besides taking her clothes off.

  50. 50

why are most comedians so depress? I am glad that atleast he admits his problem.

  51. 51

Re: LettyB Can Be Imitated Not Duplicated – You mean like alex trebek style? When your cutting don't forget stranglation that shit gets me off.

  52. 52

He should be careful when he speaks because not all depression, as he calls it, is due to coping with life. Some people have chemical imbalances, as Brooke Shields made the case when she had postpartum depression. He'd better be careful not to get carried away with making general statements about a very serious matter.

Tom Cruise specifically said that postpartum depression can be cured with vitamins, putting many women at risk because of his stupid statement.

  53. 53

BTW, one of the reasons Carrey may be depressed is that he spends so much time on a comedic high. What goes up must come down.

  54. 54

    Re: afgirl1106

    I know hes awesome :)
    and cute too. lol

  55. 55

Jim Carrey is an idiot. One look at his recent choices of roles confirms that. He is not a doctor and should shut up about both vaccines and anti-depressants. It is actually illegal to practice medicine without a license, even for celebrities. As has already been pointed out; taking anti-depressants on a temporary basis is fine when the cause is temporary. That is not always the case Dr. Carrey.

  56. 56

He's such a great talent! I'm glad he's bringing his depression out into the open and also talking about alternative therapies-all treatment needs to be individualized as some people respond better to different therapies.

  57. 57

Jim is awesome. He had a very bad childhood, lots of demons. Why is it that the funniest people always have the saddest private lives? Must be a coping mechanism. Hmm. Well, I hope his new movie does great.

  58. 58

Don't worry about sound like Cruise, he doesn't believe in psychiatry. He believes in science fiction (L. Ron Hubbard was a science fiction writer) but not psychiatry, go figure.

  59. 59

JIM NEEDS TO DRINK SOME JIMMY JONES KOOL-AID AND KISS JENNY GOOD BYE!

  60. 60

He and Jenny are both dumbfucks when it comes to science and medicine. Dangerously so…given they have a voice. They piss me off with their irresponsible rambings.

  61. sushi says – reply to this

    61

He's funny but he's a fucking nut who sounds no different than Tom Cruise and that bitch he's fucking is equally as whacky with her dumb fucking anti- immunization bullshit that was disproven.

  62. 62

    i really like those two.

as bipolar and on medication…i'm inclined to agree. i am by far, no Cruise supporter though…some people NEED their medication - schiznophrenics, psychotics, people with seizures…but there are some that they are overused and sometimes negative and harmful to.

  63. 63

"A natural substance that's in your brain" - he sounds like the Lemur King from the Madagascar movies!

  64. 64

Re: bunsen b – Gotta agree with you on the vaccination issue. Jenny's a moron. She and others like her are just trying to find some deep pockets to blame for their defective kids.

  65. 65

Re: THE BIGGEST BOSS OF THEM ALL – I agree! Depression IS often genetic and due to a chemical imbalance….in THOSE cases, medication is needed at ALL times to maintain normal levels of brain chemistry. Just because your latest movie sucked at the box office doesn't legitimately qualify as depression.

  66. 66

Tell Us Something We Don't Know. Everyone knows comedians are notoriously well known for DEPRESSION. It's what makes them see the world the way they do. One of life's little trade offs for living the High Life

  67. 67

there is a big difference between CLINICAL (or chemical) depression and what shrinks call 'circumstantial' depression.
clinical depression is when the brain cannot produce the 'normal' amount of serotonin. this is a purely chemical and often genetic imbalance that can cause a person to feel extremely depressed and suicidal, even though their life may be perfect and going really well.
circumstantial depression is what we might naturally feel if we lose our job. It is the kind of depression that is specifically related to an event or anxiety that our brain locks onto and obsesses over.
clinical depression might be helped by a better diet and/or natural medicine but they can never be completely cured, and still need a specific combination of drugs and mostly therapy.
drugs are important because they get a person stable enough to get out of bed and go to therapy. therapy is what enables people with chemical imbalances to work through their handicap, develop real coping skills, interact socially and hopefully eventually lower their drug dosage. people with clinical depression will most likely always require some form of medicine. healthy lifestyles really help, but cannot correct a genetic chemical imbalance.
please just keep this in mind. there are many forms of depression. but just like every other disease, some can be overcome and some require a little help. the worst you can do is no take it seriously.
