Colorado Doctor Finds Foot In Newborn's Brain

A Colorado Springs family is part of one of the strangest cases in medical history.

Dr. Paul Grabb, a pediatric brain surgeon, said he was surprised when he discovered a small foot growing inside the brain of 3-day-old Sam Esquibel.

"The foot literally popped out of the brain," Grabb told TheDenverChannel Wednesday.

The appendage threatened the newborn's life.

When Grabb performed the life-saving surgery at Memorial Hospital for Children in Colorado Springs, he was in for another surprise: he also found what appeared to be parts of an intestine in the folds of the infant's tiny brain, in addition to another developing foot, hand and thigh.

"I've never seen anything like it before," Grabb told the Colorado Springs Gazette. "It looked like the breach delivery of a baby coming out of the brain."

Sam was delivered on Oct. 1, within hours of an ultrasound that showed what appeared to be a tumor developing in the brain of the fetus. Three days later, Grabb performed the surgery to remove it.

The reason for the strange growth was not clear at first. It was thought to be a teratoma — a congenital brain tumor composed of foreign tissue such as muscle, hair or teeth — or a fetus in fetu, which is a developmental abnormality in which a fetal twin begins to form within the other.

Grabb, the only pediatric brain surgeon in southern Colorado, said that the formal pathology report identified the mass as a teratoma because of how perfectly formed the structure was but there is a fine line between that and the fetus in fetu.

"So it's unclear if a fetal twin began to form within another," Grabb said.

Grabb said he sees a teratoma once every few years but it doesn't compare to Sam's. Teratoma tumors do not usually grow as complex as a foot.

"You show those pictures to the most experienced pediatric neurosurgeons in the world, and they've never seen anything like it," Grabb told the Gazette. "This is completely abnormal."

Grabb said neurologically, Sam is expected to do well. Sam's brain tumor can come back so he will be monitoring that in the months and years to come.

Mom Says Baby A Miracle

Sam's mom, Tiffnie, told TheDenverChannel on Wednesday that her son is doing well but that she didn't want to appear on camera because she doesn't want to exploit her child and make him appear like a freak in the eyes of the world.

"This is our baby," Tiffnie explained, in tears.

She said when she first talked to the Gazette, she thought the story would only appear in the small-town paper. But it has circled the globe and she is getting calls from national and international media outlets.

"I am so overwhelmed right now … We've been bombarded with calls," Tiffnie said.

DenverChannel.com Reporter Jane Slater held the infant with the baby blue eyes and round face and said "he is the cutest baby I've ever seen." Sam's at a healthy weight — as evidenced by his pudgy arms and legs — which explains why family members call him the "Michelin Man," Slater said.

He was alert and happy, with a barely visible inch-long scar which stretched from his hairline to the top of his cheek.

Sam is still recovering from the surgery and shows weakness on one side of his body and some trouble with higher-level eye functions. He is already undergoing rehabilitation.

Tiffnie had said that her pregnancy was easy and there were no signs of complications until the ultrasound on Oct. 1. She and her husband had given up on the idea of having any children after years of trying and then Sam was conceived. Tiffnie said she doesn't mind driving to the hospital every week or month for Sam's MRI and blood checks, considering that he is healthy and happy.

"It's a miracle," she said.

In the meantime, Grabb wonders about the possibilities for medical science.

"How does the body form complete extremities? Who is to say we can't grow a heart, leg or foot?" Grabb asked the Denver Post earlier. "This could show a window of what's possible."

"It's always impressive to see these sorts of things but it's not as unsual as you would think," said Dr. Rich Gustafson, with Cherry Creek Pediatrics. "Teratomas can be found in abdomens or other parts of the body … what made this case so unusual is how perfectly formed the foot was and being in the skull as well. Usually, it's a totally safe and benign tumor. Often, it gets picked up in adulthood but now with ultrasound, you're actually picking more up as they are getting fetal ultrasounds."

happened here where I live in the springs and the gazette (newspaper) ran some nasty pictures of it

  28. 28

It's the fukin work of Dr. Satan, I tell ya. Demons are on the Earth at large numbers, the Bible says that people will be married to them and bring forth the end of times. I'm ready, I wish it was here now. Sooooooooooooooon enough. Can't wait.

  29. 29

Thats a really big head for an infant.

  30. 30

More evidence we're in end times. Sounds like Athena who sprung fully formed from Zeus's head. They should call him Zeus

  31. 31

    Sooo long…………

  32. 32

Talk about a new term to 'foot in mouth"… Foot in brain? Now that's something you could find hard to explain to ya mates in the future….

Poor baby. I am an very strong pro life proponent. I don't like abortion for the reasons that birth control so easily accessible and because it may be "inconvenient" for you to carry a baby to term and then let a loving family adopt. (There are a TON of families out there who whould LOVE to adopt a baby). However, if a child is majorly deformed or if it is clear they are going to live a very challenged and low quality of life, sometimes the best thing is to abort. Everyone wants to focus so much on the child. It is an extreme and life long burdon on the parents who have to take care of them their entire lives. Not the mention the extreme hardships on the very disabled people themselves. If an extreme physical disorder can be detected early in the womb, I hold no hard feeling for anyone who would want to abort.

Re: SheriMoonZombie – WTF are you smokin'?

  36. 36

The x-ray shown here in the photo cannot be that of a newborn. It has teeth with fillings or caps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. 37

    I can't see it

  38. 38

Get a life you guys!! You insult people over the net because you are to gay to do it in real life. If you don't want to read, don't, and shut your fucking pie hole instead of complaining.

    You guys are just pathetic.

  39. 39

So the foot does not have any bones in it, and the infant has one set of adult teeth. Right.

  40. 40

Hey retards that isn't the actual x-ray….come on! That person on the x-ray is an adult…see the teeth?

  41. 41

  42. 42

I really hope the baby is doing okay and all, but all I can think about when reading this is that hilarious scene in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. "Yes, inside the lump… was my twin."

  43. 43

Re: Amyrosie – Why are you reading this then? You should be running a soup kitchen, helping the poor in Calcutta or saving the bold eagles!!!!!

  44. 44

Re: THE BIGGEST BOSS OF THEM ALL – … or she can do what you said!!!!

  45. 45

Ummm, that is an adult x-ray with adult teeth with fillings where there were cavities. Try again!!!

  46. 46

    Re: Amyrosie
Nah. I'd talk plenty of shit straight to your face. Besides you're dumbass that's complaining.
OT what makes this different from a case of parasitic twins?

  47. 47

  48. 48

Amandadixon420…I think you hit the pipe one too many times! That's right, a Black President…white people always said it would be a cold day in hell before we had a black president…imagine that…Snow in Sin City! LOLOLOL!! Deal with it!! OBAMA MAMA!!

  49. 49

This x-ray is of an adult Negro because the teeth protrude beyond the nose. Note the FRONT TEETH that newborns don't have and the MOLARS do have fillings. This x-ray is more likely to be Bigfoot than a baby. Nice try Perez.

  50. 50

Perez, don't BS us. That is NOT the x-ray of an infant. It's an adult with fillings in their teeth. Look closely.

  51. 51

Re: Amyrosie – thank god somebody on here has a fucking brain… everyone of you inconsiderate assholes are proof that the world is turing to shit yall are all idiots and half of you probably dont have jobs an half of the other half are probably bartenders or waitresses. go do something with your life and learn a little something this is a real and true story and it can help us in the future to save lives if we can turn mesenchymel cells into what we need to help save fuck you all and go staight on to hell for being so lazy and pathetic….

"ooh this post is so long and i have such a life that im on perezhilton 24/7 that i cant even bother to read this"

  52. 52

Re: missiec70 – i think perez is smart enough to know thats not a childs xray he just posted a fucking picture to go along w/ the headline be fucking smarter than this bitch cuz if this brings you down you have no future

  53. 53

You all are fucking stupid. If you don't want to read, go to ebaumsworld.com and watch videos of some douchebag hitting their friend with a skateboard or something. And as for all the fucking geniuses who "figured out" that this wasn't a kid's skull nor were there extremities sticking out of it—you do know Perez uses images that sometimes have nothing to do with the actual subject matter for these things, right? Did you really think he'd actually have a picture of a 3 day old's brain on here you dipshits? I don't know what's more hilarious, the fuckfaces who can't read and don't want to—on a WEBSITE—-or the retards who think they're Sherlock Holmes. Go to the kitchen and eat D-Con. Right now.

  54. 54

weird. that 3 day old baby has fused skull bones, permanent dentition, metal crowns and amalgam fillings!!!

  55. 55

Re: bree714Re: Sookie Stackhouse – Thank you both for making excellent points. I guess you really can't actually have an intellectual comment on here since everyone seems to be complete morons.

It's amazing what that child has gone through and I hope the child will continue to heal and live a very healthy life. As well Kudos to the parents for continuing on when things got low (as far as conceiving is concerned).

  56. 56

that's kinda creepy, i live two hours away from Springs…

  57. 57

Re: amandadixon420 – no a new life has begun

  58. 58

poor kid i hope he's okay

  59. 59

    Re: jaugustadt
What are you talking about? This is not a chimera. You're the one who needs to look it up. You obviously don't know what a chimera is. The article already said it was a teratoma. Totally differnt things.
