Forced unpaid vacation time? Is that the best that Arnold Schwarzenegger can do?
Two public employee unions are saying NO WAY and suing the Governator in an attempt to halt last weeks' executive order requiring all state employees to take 2 days off a month - without pay - which could affect up to 230,000 workers.
The measure comes as a last-ditch solution to California's widening budget crisis.
The lawsuit - filed by the Professional Engineers in California Government and the California Association of Professional Scientists - claims that only the Legislature can change the pay of workers contracted through the state.
A few months ago, the Governator tried to reduce pay all around, but it never took effect.
In response to the lawsuit filed with a Sacramento Superior Court, Aaahnold has asked for a couple of months to convince the Legislature to let him furlough employees.
A couple of months?
When we've got what? 70 days until bankruptcy?
At Monday's press conference in LA, the Guhvanator said, "I hate to lay off any state employees, may I remind you, because those are hardworking people and they all have to provide for their families. But we are running out of cash by February, so I have no other choice. California is on a track to a disaster the way it's going."
Wait, you mean Arnold isn't actually from the future? He didn't he see this coming? He's not here to save us?

The two who are suing should be fired first if layoffs come around. They should be thankful they have a cushy government job backed by too powerful unions. That's one of the reasons the state's economy is tanking (my state of NJ is in the same situation). I'm sure the government will just bail them out anyway.
I think Perez is the only one getting rich during these hard times. Its nice to see him keep up with the news, but for damn sure it isn't effecting him like us "normal people". Now what are all those government employees going to do??? Get ready for the crime rate to skyrocket because normal hardworking Americans are going to be forced into doing unethical things due to desperation. Basically, ARnie is doing the right thing - what many European countries do in times of financial instability - take some time off (unpaid because (DUH) you aren't working) so someone else can have a few bucks from the Gov to feed their family or help pay to leep the lights on.

As President of a CSEA local in New York I can tell you that He can't break the Bargaining units contract by issusing a Executive order. This is against the National Labor Relations Board's Rule and regulations He is soo fucked> I'm glad he can't be President or all the union's would have trouble.

Hey, Lay off Arnold. He had a great solution of raising sales tax one cent. But oh no the CA State legislature went into their sleep mode. That increase would affect everyone in the state; legal, illegal visitors… instead of slamming homeowners with every tax increase

These selfish fucking unions need to back off. What don't they understand about the fact that THERE IS NO MONEY to keep paying them?! Any way you cut it, Cali taxpayers can't take any more increases AND the Legislature can't keep spending like there's nothing wrong. Everyone's going to have to sacrifice something. Better the union workers take two days a month off than that we have to start closing schools and nursing homes.

With the vast downturn in revenue from sales tax and the vast downturn in revenue from income taxes due to reduced workforce the gov't employees HAVE to be sifted throught to find those that add value to the good of our state and those that are not able to do productive work need to be tossed out. They (gov't workers) also need to realize that the taxpayers of California should not be held responsible to provide better benefits than the average worker has. I have many clients who work for the state of California and they are a bunch of pathetic losers. I wouldn't pay them $3.00 an hour.

i am from the east coast and my parents do not make a lot of money, so i chose to go to a public school for college. the best one i could find was in california, so i came all the way here, thinking that i would be saving a lot of money…but nope the aid sucks, got 10 times worse this year, and my parents and i will be in debt til we go to our graves.. all thanks to that good-for-nothing governor.
actually most workers pecg are not paid through the general fund. the special funds budget that pays the state engineers is not running a deficit like the general fund. and state engineers make significantly less than their counterparts in local government and even less than those in private firms.
i agree that 2 days without pay is better than no job at all, but there are better ways of fixing the budget problems than targeting state workers.
and not all state workers are slackers. some are, but so are those in the private sector, in all fields. look at all you people on perez while you should be working. my tax dollars aren't paying your wages, but your inefficiency raises labor costs and raises the price of everything.

To the person who came to California for a cheap public education. The state has higher rates for out of state students and non US residents, because they and their families have not paid state income taxes. We would otherwise be swamped by people trying to get cheap educations. Another word of caution California is not a cheap state to live in.
On another note the CA state government expanded during the real estate boom due to taxes collected. Now that all that property is foreclosing and devaluating, there is no tax money coming in
The Mayor of Los Angeles is the worst offender. He hired a huge number of incompetant cronies at all levels Out sourced city jobs to sleazy people who turned out to not even have contractors licenses and brought in Mexican labor union members (from Mexico) to work on city infrastructure. Needless to say Los Angles is crumbling from third world technology.
