So, Barry O was in Hawaii Tuesday, paying respects to his grandmother by scattering her ashes on cliffs east of Hononulu.
And breaking the law!
A Perezcious reader brought to our attention that according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources of Hawaii, it's illegal to dump human remains on the shore!
In accordance with the regulations determined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, (cremated) remains must be scattered 3 nautical miles off the shore line.
Umm…oops?

I think that is the law in a lot of places. We scattered my Dad's ashes in 2006 off the coast of California and we couldn't do it by the shore - we had to go out so many miles by boat before we could scatter the ashes. You would think someone would have looked into that first…
I say cut him a break. I scattered my mom's cremains at the Jersey shore. It was where she wanted to be!

If anyone of you would have taken the time to actually read the regulation you would have seen this little tidbit… "human remains transported from United States ports or on United States vessels or aircraft may be buried at sea under specified conditions." Since Obama was not on either a ship or transported from a port, those regulations do not apply.
In Hawaii you are allowed to scatter remains if you do it from land or from a surfboard.

That law is not really followed or enforced. It's very common for people to scatter ashes off of cliffs, off the shore, and in a kayak close to land.

That law talks about the burial at sea of a corpse — a body — not cremated remains. There is a difference.
There are more important things to worry about than a few ashes scattering into the wind….like the ECONOMY.
