Good News For Time Warner Cable Customers - Or Is It?

Filed under: TV News > Business Blitz

mtvcomedy__opt.jpg

As we mentioned earlier this week, Viacom, the media company that owns Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon, among many other channels, and Time Warner Cable have been unable to resolve a business agreement and is threatening removing Viacom channel services to subscribers. Which means that Time Warner customers may not be able to watch some of their favorite shows.

But, thankfully, it looks like Time Warner has caved in.

Just before the midnight deadline a deal was finally reached.

This means all 19 cable networks owned by Viacom will stay on Time Warner's lineup.

And that's good news cuz more than 13 million subscribers would have been affected. And we know people can't get enough of The Hills. Oh, wait. They CAN! Ratings are down!

Viacom was originally demanding a fee increase of about 25 cents per subscriber per month for its channels. Time Warner said it wouldn't pay more claiming they'd have to charge the cost to their customers.

At the moment, the final details of the contract haven't been released, but don't be surprised if you see a price increase on your bill because of Viacom's greedy ways.

  3. 3

    am i first?

  4. 4

    Crap.

  5. 5

MTV SUCKS, but I'm thankful for comedy central and Vh1, the reality shows on Vh1 are funnier than the ones on MTV.

  6. 6

good for perez, too since he has a show on vh1….

  7. 7

I love the Hills, that's the only good show on MTV.

  8. 8

Lol, then again the hills sucks now.

  9. 9

    but i love you perez

  10. 10

  11. 11

    boring…………….

  12. 12

That 25 cents will become $5.00 on the customers' bills!

  13. 13

this happened before.. like 8 or 10 years back.. think its all a publicity stunt to make us think we're losing the channels so we wanna watch them more. meanwhile they spam our' 'avorite'shows with fear based suggestions like losing spongebob and the hills.. fuk them!

Re: Assume the Position! – IF I WERE PEREZ I'D BE THE PIMP

  15. 15

I wish I weren't addicted to Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, because otherwise I'd boycott viacom all together. fuckers.

  16. 16

MTV=ASSHOLES! they arent worth any more than last year, in fact, even less. MTV and VH1 have NO music anymore and suck, Nickelodean has like 2 shows now, and TV Land doesnt play as good of shows as they used to. So Comedy central and Spike are their only really good stations nowadays. MTV should be lucky with anything they get.

  17. 17

It's high time for the consumer to revolt against the cable-dish-directtv providers and say enough is enough. Forget these "packages" which include zillions of channels we don't ever watch to get the channels we do. Let us customize our individual channel packages ourselves…we know what we want and what we don't.

  18. 18

Viacom sucks, but not as much as MTV does. MTV better come up with some new programming quick. Oh, here's a novel idea—how about some MUSIC??
I would have been fine without these channels for a few days while the cable company negotiated (and I wish they had more) because YES our bill is going up now. Douchebags.

  19. 19

    I don't care..

  20. 20

MY KIDS WERE ABOUT TO THROW SHIT AT THE TV I PROB WOULDVE FREAKED TOO

  21. 21

The reality of the situation is while Viacom is trying to make it look like they weren't requested anything unresonable. They wanted 3 X's what they were getting paid. Time Warner felt with the recession they didn't want to raise the cable prices. Especially for programs that people can go online and watch for free. I would know, afterall I work for Time Warner Cable. Viacom is just being greedy. I will say though, THANK GOD they didn't shut down the channels. My kids would have been so angry if they couldn't watch NOGGIN anymore. I could care less about any of the other channels

  22. 22

THANK GOD! I don't know what I would ever do without my MTV, VH1…and the like! OMG I was PISSED when I woke up that morning and seen it scrolling across the screen to call Time Warner and demand to have it saved! GRRR…I am glad they caved! :D Time Warner is pretty damned extravagant in the first place and so if the bill DOES go up screw that, I'll try something else! but for now.. YAY, no bye bye Viacom channels!

  23. 23

I hope we do not have to pay more on our bills because they are not running their business properly. That is the way the world runs.

  24. 24

People need to stand up. If everyone cancel because of the price than the rich bitches or bastards that own or run the companies may not keep on going up on our prices.

  25. 25

Actually, Perez, you need to do a little more research. Time Warner Cable is the guilty - and greedy - party in all of this. Viacom's channels bring in about 20 percent of TWC revenue, but TWC only pays Viacom 0.2 % of the prfits from that revenue. And, to top it off, as the negotioation deadline loomed, Viacom ran a repeat loop across the bottom of their channels informing customers that they were going to be losing their programming (TWC did NOT in any way inform or warn us that there was an issue) and provided a number to call and complain. TWC then blacked out that information with a bigger loop on the bottom of their channels with a different number that when you called said they were having technical difficulties and you couldn't get through. TWC is shady, overpriced, and greedy and their service sucks. We switched to DirecTV!!

  26. 26

i have to say i am on Viacom's side because I hate Time Warner, yes I am a valued customer, but THEY are the greedy ones. I live in Austin and KXAN, a local NBC affiliate, was taken off air because TW and NBC had trouble with negotiations as well. What Time Warner does is that it charges customers a way high price for a signal that would, otherwise, be free. So, Viacom is essentially getting the raw end of the deal because TW is making a lot of money off of Viacom but Viacom hardly sees a single dime of such profits. It sucks for us in the long run but TW should be less greedy and share their profits with Viacom. Then all parties involved would benefit. TW gets good profits too, their bills are sooooo expensive!

  27. 27

mtv is a useless channel and i would not be the least bit upset if i didn't have to be exposed to the half second plash of programming i see as i flip pass it.
